Seemingly gliding: the power of metadata in academic resource discovery systems

<p>Creators of resource discovery systems are at a turning point in development: their systems must satisfy the users&rsquo; needs for the delivery of high-quality, academically-rigorous content, while also providing the most straightforward, Google-like interfaces possible. The role of metadata in this scenario becomes paramount as users enter a world which seems serendipitous, but which is still subject to academic rigour, relevance and comprehensiveness.<br> Ironically, such a system, necessarily supported by high-quality metadata, increasingly conceals them, thus lowering their profile in the user&rsquo;s mind, and their importance becomes even more camouflaged to the user community. Without them, however, there is no system.<br> This paper explores this dichotomy, describing a vision for resource discovery which creates a seamless journey between related, yet disparate, resources. It moves on to look at a case study of a single tool: the HASSET thesaurus, developed at the UK Data Archive. This tool&rsquo;s journey from an inhouse-developed thesaurus to the lynch-pin of many online services is described in detail. Lastly, the paper takes the theory of achieving focused results from a simple interface and, using HASSET, applies it to an existing service: the Economic and Social Data Service (ESDS). Metadata is shown to be the essential &ndash; and yet increasingly<br> invisible &ndash; force at work in effective resource discovery systems.</p>

<p>This repository contains raw data related to the paper&nbsp;"The Role of Flexible Geothermal Power in Decarbonized Electricity Systems." 'EGS_Costing.xlsx' is an excel model used to determine the cost and performance of EGS resources based on input characteristics such as resource depth, temperature, and location. 'Reservoir_Simulations.zip' contains outputs from the ResFrac reservoir simulations used to calibrate the EGS optimization model. The 'PowerGenome.zip' contains the PowerGenome input and output files used to create non-EGS inputs for the GenX power systems model. 'GenX_Source_Code.zip' contains the source code for the modified version of GenX used in this study. Other compressed folders contain the input and output files for all GenX runs referenced in this study.&nbsp;</p>

Photovoltaic system power production

<p>The dataset contains data related to the photovoltaic (PV) system installed at Poznan Supercomputing and Networking Center used to power the servers in one of the server rooms. The data come from a 1-month measurement period taken between 03.09.2019-03.10.2019. The PV system consists of 80 PV panels with 20kW peak power. Servers are directly connected to inverters so that they can be supplied directly by the power grid, PV system in the case of sufficient generation or by batteries (75kWh) if energy production is too low. Switching between power sources can be controlled by the user, however, if batteries are discharged below 60%, servers immediately switch to the power grid to extend battery life. Data from: Modularity and rates of evolutionary change in a power-amplified prey capture system

The dynamic interplay among structure, function and phylogeny form a classic triad of influences on the patterns and processes of biological diversification. While these dynamics are widely recognized as important, quantitative analyses of their interactions have infrequently been applied to biomechanical systems. Here we analyze these factors using a fundamental biomechanical mechanism: power amplification. Power-amplified systems use springs and latches to generate extremely fast and powerful movements. This study focuses specifically on the power amplification mechanism in the fast raptorial appendages of mantis shrimp (Crustacea: Stomatopoda). Using geometric morphometric and phylogenetic comparative analyses, we measured evolutionary modularity and rates of morphological evolution of the raptorial appendage's biomechanical components. We found that "smashers" (hammer-shaped raptorial appendages) exhibit lower modularity and 10-fold slower rates of morphological change when compared to non-smashers (spear-shaped or undifferentiated appendages). The morphological and biomechanical integration of this system at a macro-evolutionary scale and the presence of variable rates of evolution reveal a balance between structural constraints, functional variation, and the developmental and genetic roles in evolutionary diversification.

Data from: Muscle tradeoffs in a power-amplified prey capture system

Should animals operating at great speeds and accelerations use fast or slow muscles? The answer hinges on a fundamental tradeoff: muscles can be maximally fast or forceful, but not both. Direct lever systems offer a straightforward manifestation of this tradeoff, yet the fastest organisms use power amplification, not direct lever action. Power-amplified systems typically use slow, forceful muscles to pre-load springs which then rapidly release elastic potential energy to generate high speeds and accelerations. However, a fast response to a stimulus may necessitate fast spring-loading. Across 22 mantis shrimp species (Stomatopoda), this study examined how muscle anatomy correlates with spring mechanics and appendage type. We found that muscle force is maximized through physiological cross-sectional area, but not through sarcomere length. Sit-and-wait predators had the shortest sarcomere lengths (fastest contractions) and the slowest strike speeds. The species that crush shells ("smashers") had the fastest speeds, most forceful springs and longest sarcomeres. The origin of the smasher clade yielded dazzlingly high accelerations, perhaps due to the release from fast spring-loading for evasive prey capture. This study offers a new window into the dynamics of force-speed tradeoffs in muscles in the biomechanical, comparative evolutionary framework of power-amplified systems.

Data from: Levers and linkages: Mechanical trade-offs in a power-amplified system

Mechanical redundancy within a biomechanical system (e.g., many-to-one mapping) allows morphologically divergent organisms to maintain equivalent mechanical outputs. However, most organisms depend on the integration of more than one biomechanical system. Here we test whether coupled mechanical systems follow a pattern of amplification (mechanical changes are congruent and evolve towards the same functional extreme) or independence (mechanisms evolve independently). We examined the correlated evolution and evolutionary pathways of the coupled 4-bar linkage and lever systems in mantis shrimp (Stomatopoda) ultrafast raptorial appendages. We examined models of character evolution in the framework of two divergent groups of stomatopods – "smashers" (hammer-shaped appendages) and "spearers" (bladed appendages). Smashers tended to evolve towards force amplification, while spearers evolved towards displacement amplification. These findings show that coupled biomechanical systems can evolve synergistically, thereby resulting in functional amplification rather than mechanical redundancy.

WildDESED: An LLM-Powered Dataset for Wild Domestic Environment Sound Event Detection System

<p>A new large language model (LLM)-powered dataset namely wild domestic environment sound event detection (WildDESED). It is crafted as an extension to the original DESED dataset to reflect diverse acoustic variability and complex noises in home settings. We leveraged LLMs to generate eight different domestic scenarios based on target sound categories of the DESED dataset. Then we enriched the scenarios with a carefully tailored mixture of noises selected from AudioSet and ensured no overlap with target sound. We consider widely popular convolutional neural recurrent network to study WildDESED dataset, which depicts its challenging nature. We then apply curriculum learning by gradually increasing noise complexity to enhance the model's generalization capabilities across various noise levels.</p>

Their installation in existing buildings requires an extended, external pipes appendix whose laying operation needs a drilling activities nearby structural skeletons often designed to support static loads only, especially when ancient buildings are targeted. This contribution reports and discusses the experimental results achieved within a specific case study within the European project GEOFIT. In particular, standard accelerometric measurements in and nearby a single-story reinforced concrete building are collected and analysed in the absence of drilling (pre-drilling) and during drilling activities (drilling phase) to monitor the structure response to the external source of vibrations related to the excavations phase. The target is to outline automatic guidelines toward installations preventing from any sort of structural damage.</p>
