New giant carnivorous dinosaur reveals convergent evolutionary trends in theropod arm reduction

<p>Giant carnivorous dinosaurs such as <em>Tyrannosaurus rex</em> and abelisaurids are characterized by highly reduced forelimbs that stand in contrast to their huge dimensions, massive skulls, and obligate bipedalism. Another group that follows this pattern, yet is still poorly known, is the Carcharodontosauridae: dominant predators that inhabited most continents during the Early Cretaceous and reached their largest sizes in Aptian-Cenomanian times. Despite many discoveries over the last three decades, aspects of their anatomy, especially with regard to the skull, forearm, and feet, remain poorly known. Here we report a new carcharodontosaurid, <em>Meraxes gigas</em>, gen. et sp. nov., based on a specimen recovered from the Upper Cretaceous Huincul Formation of northern Patagonia, Argentina. Phylogenetic analysis places <em>Meraxes</em> among derived Carcharodontosauridae, in a clade with other massive South American species. <em>Meraxes</em> preserves novel anatomical information for derived carcharodontosaurids, including an almost complete forelimb that provides evidence for convergent allometric trends in forelimb reduction among three lineages of large-bodied, megapredatory non-avian theropods, including a remarkable degree of parallelism between the latest-diverging tyrannosaurids and carcharodontosaurids. This trend, coupled with a likely lower bound on forelimb reduction, hypothesized to be about 0.4 forelimb/femur length, combined to produce this short-armed pattern in theropods. The almost complete cranium of <em>Meraxes</em> permits new estimates of skull length in <em>Giganotosaurus</em>, which is among the longest for theropods. <em>Meraxes</em> also provides further evidence that carchardontosaurids reached peak diversity shortly before their extinction with high rates of trait evolution in facial ornamentation possibly linked to a social signaling role.</p>

Population models used in: Method to assess potential magnitude of terrestrial European avian population reductions from ingestion of lead ammunition

<p>Current estimates of terrestrial bird losses across Europe from ingestion of lead ammunition are based on uncertain or generic assumptions. A method is needed to develop defensible European-specific estimates compatible with available data that does not require long-term field studies. We propose a 2-step method using carcass data and population models. The method estimates percentage of deaths diagnosed as directly caused by lead poisoning as a lower bound and, as an upper bound, the percentage of possible deaths from sublethal lead poisoning that weakens birds, making them susceptible to death by other causes. We use these estimates to modify known population-level annual mortality. Our method also allows for potential reductions in reproduction from lead shot ingestion because reductions in survival and reproduction are entered into population models of species with life histories representative of the most groups of susceptible species. The models estimate the sustainability and potential population decreases from lead poisoning in Europe. Using the best available data, we demonstrate the method on two taxonomic groups of birds: gallinaceous birds and diurnal raptors. The direction of the population trends affects the estimate, and we incorporated such trends into the method. Our midpoint estimates of the reduction in population size of the European gallinaceous bird (&lt; 2%) group and raptor group  (2.9 – 7.7%) depend on the species life history, maximum growth rate,  population trend, and if reproduction is assumed to be reduced. Our estimates can be refined as more information becomes available in countries with data gaps. We advocate use of this method to improve upon or supplement approaches currently being used. As we demonstrate, the method also can be applied to individual species of concern if enough data across countries are available.</p>

Inflation Reduction Act Energy Communities

<p>The Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 (IRA) became law on August 8, 2022. Under the law, new qualifying renewable and/or carbon-free electricity generation projects constructed in certain areas of the US, called energy communities, are eligible for bonus worth an additional 10% to the value of the production tax credit or a 10 percentage point increase in the value of the investment tax credit. The IRA does not explicitly map or list these specific communities. Instead, eligible communities are defined by a series of qualifications:</p> <ol> <li>a brownfield site,</li> <li>a metropolitan statistical area (MSA) or non-metropolitan statistical area with either (a) 0.17% or greater employment <em>or</em> (b) 25% or greater local tax revenues related to the extraction, processing, transport, or storage of coal, oil, or natural gas; <em>and</em> an unemployment rate at or above the national average for the previous year, or</li> <li>a census tract containing or adjacent to (a) a coal mine closed after December 31, 1999 or (b) a coal-fired electric generating unit retired after December 31, 2009.</li> </ol> <p>These maps and data layers contain GIS data for coal mines, coal-fired power plants, fossil energy related employment, and brownfield sites. Each record represents a point, tract or metropolitan statistical area and non-metropolitan statistical area with attributes including plant type, operating information, GEOID, etc. The input data used includes:</p> <ol> <li>Brownfields &ndash; Source: <a href="https://www.epa.gov/frs/geospatial-data-download-service">EPA</a>. No analysis was performed on this data layer. However, tract polygon layers have a column denoting brownfield presence (0 for no brownfield site, 1 if the tract contains a brownfield somewhere within the polygon).</li> <li>Eligible Employment MSAs (&ldquo;Final_Employment_Qualifying_MSAs&rdquo;) &ndash; Source: US Census <a href="https://www.census.gov/programs-surveys/cbp.html">County Business Patterns</a>. Data set for the journal article: Tandem electrocatalytic CO2 reduction with Fe-porphyrins and Cu nanocubes enhances ethylene production

<p>Copper-based tandem schemes have emerged as promising strategies to promote the formation<br> of multi-carbon products of the electrocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction. In such approaches,<br> the CO-generating component of the tandem catalyst increases the local concentration of CO<br> and thereby enhances the intrinsic carbon-carbon (C-C) coupling on copper. However, the<br> optimal characteristics of the CO-generating catalyst for maximizing eventual C2 production<br> are currently unknown. In this work, we developed tunable tandem catalysts comprising iron<br> porphyrin (Fe-Por), as the CO-generating component, and Cu nanocubes (Cucub) to understand<br> how the turnover frequency for CO (TOFCO) of the molecular catalysts impacts C-C coupling<br> on the Cu surface. First, we tuned the TOFCO of the Fe-Por by varying the number of orbitals<br> involved in the &pi;-system. Then, by coupling these molecular catalysts with the Cucub, we<br> assessed the current densities and faradaic efficiencies, discovering that all of the designed Fe-<br> Por boost ethylene production. The most efficient Cucub/Fe-Por tandem catalyst was the one<br> including the Fe-Por with the highest TOFCO and exhibited a nearly 22-fold increase in the<br> ethylene selectivity and 100 mV positive shift of the onset potential with respect to the pristine<br> Cucub. These results reveal that coupling the TOFCO tunability of molecular catalysts along with<br> copper nanocatalysts opens up new possibilities towards the development of Cu-based catalysts<br> with enhanced selectivity for multi-carbon product generation at low overpotential.</p>

<p>This archive contains the raw speckle images and experimental notes for the data contained in the journal article: "Speckle Noise Reduction via Linewidth Broadening for Planetary Laser Reflectance Spectrometers".</p> <p>The data available are:</p> <p>Raw speckle images for each of 5 illumination sources:</p> <ol> <li>Single-Frequence diode (files are named "IPS")</li> <li>Dual Mode pump diode (files are named "II-IV")</li> <li>Fabry Perot didoe (files are names "FP")</li> <li>Superluminescent Diode (files are named "SLD")</li> <li>Whilte light halogen source (files are named "WL")</li> </ol> <p>For each of theses source there are 5 images for each reflectance target, four speckle patterns and one background image with the laser source off. The naming convention is:</p> <p>LaserName_TargetReflectance_Target Rotation State or BKG.tiff</p> <p>For example, IPS_50_2 is the single-frequency laser using the 50% reflectance target and second rotation state of the target.</p> <p>The integration time for each image is give in the file "Experiment Paramters.csv" and was manually change to keep the maximum intensity at roughly 75% saturation.</p> <p>The spectra of the three laser sources presented in the manuscript are also included as .csv files</p>

Heterogeneous Biocatalytic Reduction of 5-(Hydroxy)methyl Furfural Using two Co-immobilised Alcohol Dehydrogenases

<p>Biocatalyst heterogenisation may enable robust processes that can be applied in biorefineries to selectively valorise highly functionalised platform chemicals. In this work, we co-immobilise two dehydrogenases and successfully apply them in the selective reduction of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 2,5-bis(hydroxymethyl) furan (BHMF) with efficient <em>in situ</em> cofactor regeneration. First, we select the best enzyme candidates (an alcohol dehydrogenase from <em>Escherichia coli</em> together with a thermostable glucose dehydrogenase from <em>Bacillus subtilis</em>) and then screen a variety of carriers and chemistries to find the optimal individual immobilisation protocols for each dehydrogenase. As a result, methacrylate carriers (Purolite&trade;) functionalised with either aldehydes or with epoxy and cobalt-chelate groups co-immobilise both enzymes in high yields with a sufficient activity recovery (&gt;20%). These optimal heterogeneous biocatalysts enable the quantitative bio-reduction of HMF to BHMF with &gt;99% selectivity in only fifteen minutes, exhibiting an outstanding reusability of &gt;15 batch cycles with a total volumetric productivity of &sim;5 g L<sup>&minus;1</sup> h<sup>&minus;1</sup> of BHMF. Preliminary experiments on a semipreparative scale with HMF loadings of 40 mM also reach high product conversions (86%). Overall, the judicious selection of enzymes, carriers and reaction conditions enables the design of robust biocatalysts that may contribute to paving the way to the valorisation of highly functionalised chemicals in biorefineries.</p>

An illustrative example of the potential effect of seasonal shifts in nematode species composition on observed faecal egg count (FEC) reduction, based on typical epidemiological patterns in sheep in temperate areas. FEC composition indicates the proportion of eggs belonging to each species, where eggs of Trichostrongylus spp., Teladorsagia circumcincta and Haemonchus contortus are not easily distinguished from each other. Months are calendar months in the northern hemisphere, with Nematodirus battus and then Teladorsagia dominating in spring and early summer, Trichostrongylus in late summer and autumn, and Haemonchus transiently dominant following favourable climatic conditions [91]. In scenario 1, only Haemonchus is resistant to treatment, with FECR of 80%; in scenario 2, only Teladorsagia is resistant (80% FECR); FEC of other species reduce by 98% following treatment. A FECRT would have different results in different months, detecting resistance (&lt;95% FECR) only in months (% FECR in bold) in which the resistant species contributes sufficiently to total faecal egg output, and returning false-negative results for AR in other months. The simulation does not account for differences in fecundity between species, which further amplify seasonal variation in FECR. Here, FECRT conducted at different times of year produce differing results even if anthelmintic efficacy is stable within species over that period.

Technical considerations also influence the accuracy with which FECR is observed (2), and hence the detection of anthelmintic resistance (3). Technical refinements to the FECRT have very much focused on improving the accuracy with which actual FECR is measured and translated into AR classification (step 3), even though many factors other than AR can strongly influence actual FECR. These risk confounding the FECRT and should be borne in mind when designing, conducting and interpreting the test, whether in standardised form for detection of AR, or in modified forms to monitor anthelmintic effectiveness.

Assessment of risk and vulnerability to disasters by field protocols and classification trees: an analysis of the Municipal Risk Reduction Plans (MRRP) of São Bernardo do Campo and Franco da Rocha (2020-2021), in Brazil

<p><span>Most disaster risk assessment methodologies were developed by natural science professionals. The UN Sendai Framework confirms the need to include these methods as interweaving complex networks of socially vulnerable financial processes, especially in developing countries. This work aimed to analyze the experience of including social vulnerability information in field protocols of the Municipal Risk Reduction Plans (MRRP) of S&atilde;o Bernardo do Campo and Franco da Rocha (2020-2021). A georeferenced database was structured with data from field protocols on risk sectors and then the relationship between vulnerability and risk was analyzed using the classification tree method. The results show that the geotechnical and social vulnerability variables relevant to risk attribution are largely overlapping over the sectors, but that the integrated analysis of the two dimensions allows a better interpretation of the risk level. However, the models with information from field protocols cannot replace a broader holistic assessment by the specialist in the field. Finally, qualitative reflections are made on the limitations and potential of including aspects of vulnerability in the specific case study.</span></p>
