Alternative Covid-19 mitigation measures in school classrooms: Analysis using an agent-based model of SARS-CoV-2 transmission
<p>The SARS-CoV-2 epidemic continues to have major impacts on children's education, with schools required to implement infection control measures that have led to long periods of absence and classroom closures. We have developed an agent-based epidemiological model of SARS-CoV-2 transmission that allows us to quantify projected infection patterns within primary school classrooms, and related uncertainties; the basis of our approach is a contact model constructed using random networks, informed by structured expert judgment. The effectiveness of mitigation strategies is considered in terms of effectiveness at suppressing infection outbreaks and limiting pupil absence. Covid-19 infections in schools in the UK in Autumn 2020 are re-examined and the model used for forecasting infection levels in autumn 2021, as the more infectious Delta-variant was emerging and school transmission was thought likely to play a major role in an incipient new wave of the epidemic. Our results are in good agreement with available data and indicate that testing-based surveillance of infections in the classroom population with isolation of positive cases is a more effective mitigation measure than bubble quarantine both for reducing transmission in primary schools and for avoiding pupil absence, even accounting for the insensitivity of self-administered tests. Bubble quarantine entails large numbers of pupils being absent from school, with only a modest impact on classroom infection levels. However, maintaining a reduced contact rate within the classroom can have a major beneficial impact on managing Covid-19 in school settings.</p>

She is an interdisciplinary researcher focusing on using informatics, data science, machine learning, and digital information systems to solve real-world healthcare challenges. She is the academic lead of a large collaborative project of Improving the Quality of Healthcare through an Integrated Clinical Pathway Management Approach and Cloud based Digital Data Integration Platform, which was awarded ESRC O2RB Excellence in Impact Award in 2018 for her research impact on healthcare quality improvement. She is the academic lead of machine learning based decision support system for outpatient management which has successfully been implemented in Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust and has received Research Engagement and Impact award in 2020. A New Approach for an Old Idea - Professor Kelvin Tsoi (The Chinese University of Hong Kong, School of Public Health and Primary Care)</p> <p>Bio: Professor Kelvin Tsoi is an Epidemiologist specialized in Digital Health. His research interests focus on digital innovation in chronic disease management, including mobile and telecare application for hypertension management, technological implementation and social engagement for cognitive screening, artificial intelligent application on electronic health records. He also works as the traditional epidemiologist on evidence-based medicine and population cohort studies. He obtained his Bachler Degree from Department of Statistics and Doctor of Philosophy from School of Public Health in the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He further received post-doctoral training in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Department of Medicine and Therapeutics. He was also appointed as a Director of CUHK JC Bowel Cancer Education Centre to promote colorectal cancer screening. In 2011, he worked as a research scientist in Hospital Authority. He led projects covering a wide range of service areas on chronic diseases, such as service demand projection for schizophrenia and dementia. The experience of database management enhanced his understanding of the HA database structures. In 2013, he was invited to join the interdisciplinary team for Big Data research and worked closely with a team of engineers and data scientists. ColLaboratoire - CogNovo Summer School
<p>During the week from 15 to 20 August 2016, the CogNovo headquarter at Plymouth University was buzzing with unusual visitors: we sent out a call for a summer school "ColLaboratoire" on social creativity and collaboration, and a number of absolutely fantastic participants came to work with us. During our initial call in February we offered six different projects to our applicants to chose from, of which we implemented four during the week in August: "Are Networks (Becoming) Conscious?", "NAO that's what I'm talking about", "Remapping the Sensorium: Do You Hear What I See?", and "Let's Improv it".</p>

Challenges faced by adolescent girls on Menstrual Hygiene Management: School-based study, Siha, Kilimanjaro, Tanzania
<p><span>Menstrual hygiene management (MHM) has received increasing attention as a public health issue globally. Governments and stakeholders have started to engage communities to address barriers and challenges faced by adolescents in and out of school. </span><span>This study, conducted in Siha District, northern Tanzania, responds to the call for evidence sensitive to local barriers and challenges to inform successful strategies in MHM. </span></p> <p><strong><span>Methods:</span></strong></p> <p><span>Institutional-based cross-sectional study which involved 400 school girls aged 10 to 19 years old who attained menarche were randomly selected in four secondary and advanced level government schools from September 2019 to January 2020. Bivariate and multivariable logistic regression analysis were employed. A P-value less than 0.05 was used to declare statistical significance.</span></p> <p><strong><span>Results:</span></strong></p> <p><span>Among all the girls who participated in the study 30% reported missing school due to menstruation while 56% of the girls reported using toilets as changing places at school. The use of reusable sanitary material was 52% compared with non-reusable materials which was 48%. In urban areas, 34.5% of students reported missing school due to menstruation compared to 25% who reported in rural areas. The findings show that school absenteeism among adolescent girls during menstruation is significantly associated with a headache (Adjusted odds ratio (AOR) = 3.3 (95% CI:1.32 – 8.23)) and abdominal waist pain (AOR = 8.50 (95% CI: 6.27 – 15.56)),</span> <span>lack of changing rooms in school (AOR = 5.85 (95% CI: 4.82 – 7.93)). In addition, the high cost of sanitary pads was mentioned as one of the main reasons for students not using sanitary pads.</span></p> <p><strong><span>Conclusion:</span></strong></p> <p><span>This study calls for promoting MHM-friendly practices in schools to create a supportive and conducive learning environment for adolescent girls. Ongoing school infrastructure improvements such as the construction of classrooms and toilets in schools should include the construction of proper changing places to reduce the number of adolescent girls who miss school due to menstruation. </span></p> <p><span> </span></p>
Can technical education in high school smooth postsecondary transitions for students with disabilities?
<p>Participation in Career Technical Education (CTE) programs has been proposed as a valuable strategy for supporting transition to independence among students with disabilities. We exploit a discontinuity created by admissions thresholds from a statewide system of CTE high schools. Our findings suggest attending CTE high schools has large positive effects on completing high school on time, employment, and earnings, including for individuals 22 years or older. Attending CTE schools also results in more time spent with non-disabled peers and higher 10th grade test scores. These results appear concentrated among male students, but the sample of female students is too small to support strong conclusions about outcomes. Notably, these estimates are for a system of CTE high schools operating at scale and serving students across a wide spectrum of disabilities, and the estimated effects appear broad based over disability type, time spent with non-disabled peers in 8th grade and previous academic performance.</p>
