Beyond sex and aggression: Testosterone rapidly matches behavioral responses to social context and tries to predict the future
<p>Although androgens are widely studied in the context of aggression, androgenic influences on prosocial behaviors have been less explored. We examined testosterone's (T) influence on prosocial and aggressive responses in a positively-valenced social context (interacting with a pairbond partner) and a negatively-valenced context (interacting with an intruder) in socially monogamous Mongolian gerbils. T increased and decreased prosocial responses in the same individuals towards a pairbond partner and an intruder, respectively, both within 30 minutes, but did not affect aggression. T also had persistent effects on prosocial behavior; males in which T initially increased prosocial responses towards a partner continued to exhibit elevated prosocial responses towards an intruder male days later until a second T injection rapidly eliminated those responses. Thus, T surges can rapidly match behavior to current social context, as well as prime animals for positive social interactions in the future. Neuroanatomically, T rapidly increased hypothalamic oxytocin, but not vasopressin, cellular responses during interactions with a partner. Together, our results indicate that T can facilitate and inhibit prosocial behaviors depending on social context, that it can influence prosocial responses across rapid and prolonged time scales, and that it affects oxytocin signaling mechanisms that could mediate its context-dependent behavioral influences.</p>
Exploring Behavioral Tendencies on Social Media: A Perspective Through Claim Check-Worthiness
<h2>Randomly Sampled Users Dataset (RSU.csv)</h2> <p>This dataset consists of 11,173 users collected through Twitter's APIs. We collected 10,000 random English tweets in February 2023 using Twitter's Volume Stream API. The tweets were posted by around 3,000 users. For each user, we collected up to 100 of its most recent followees using Twitter's Following API. Through the Timeline and Liking APIs, for each user, we collected their most recent tweets (up to 3,200 tweets due to Twitter's limit) and liked-tweets (up to 3,200 too). We then filtered out users that have insufficient tweets (less than 100 original-tweets or less than 80 retweets/liked-tweets) to ensure that the sample sizes are statistically significant in our analyses. Finally, we have 11,173 users along with 40,405,150 tweets. </p> <h2>Humanities Dataset (HUM.csv)</h2> <p>This dataset contains 341,285 tweets and 498 Twitter accounts from selected Twitter lists including <em>Book Author</em>, <em>Christianity</em>, <em>Artists</em>, <em>Buddhism</em>, <em>Musician</em>, and <em>Philosophers</em>. We use Twitter's List and Timeline APIs to collect the accounts and their most recent tweets (up to 1,000). The dataset was collected in January 2024.</p> <h2>Politics Dataset (POL.csv)</h2> <p>This dataset contains all tweets from selected U.S. news media and U.S. politicians including <em>Senators</em>, <em>House Members</em>, <em>US Governors</em>, <em>US Secretaries of State</em>, <em>US Cabinet</em>, and <em>US Election Officials</em> at collection time. We used Twitter's Timeline API to collect the accounts' tweets (up to 3,200 tweets). The dataset was collected in May 2023, with 8,153,745 tweets and 3,784 Twitter accounts. </p> <h2>Data Fields</h2> <p>Due to Twitter's content redistribution policy, we are only allowed to publish tweet IDs and user IDs. Therefore, in each dataset, each row/datapoint represent a tweet, containing two fields --- tweet_id and user_id. </p>
Data from: Multiple effects of weather on common waxbill group foraging and social behavior
<p>The weather poses challenges for wildlife. Environmental challenges can be responded to at the group level by social animals, but the influence of weather on group behavior is poorly understood. We investigated how the weather affects behavior in a gregarious species by monitoring common waxbills <em>(Estrilda astrild</em>) in a large mesocosm during five years. We found seasonal patterns on collective foraging, aggressiveness, and the structure of the social network, usually showing two cycles per year: one peaking in Spring and a smaller one in late Summer. Controlling for seasonality, we found behavioral changes related to increased energy demands on colder and/or cloudier days, such as more frequent and larger foraging groups that resulted in less structured social networks. Rain and wind disturb movement, and we found that on rainy days foraging group journeys became briefer and more synchronous, resulting in stronger associations between individuals and less structured networks, and that on windy days foraging groups were less frequent, larger, and with more within-group aggression. The results show that the weather has more varied effects than anticipated on ecologically-relevant group behavior. We discuss how such weather-related effects can improve predictions of how social animals will react to environmental changes.</p>
Data for: Multiple behavioral mechanisms shape development in a highly social cichlid fish
<p>Early-life social experiences shape adult phenotype, yet the underlying behavioral mechanisms remain poorly understood. We manipulated early-life social experience in the highly social African cichlid fish Astatotilapia burtoni to investigate the effects on behavior and stress axis function in juveniles. Juveniles experienced different numbers of social partners in stable pairs (1 partner), stable groups (6 fish; 5 partners), and socialized pairs (a novel fish was exchanged every 5 days; 5 partners). Treatments also differed in group size (groups vs. pairs) and stability (stable vs. socialized). We then measured individual behavior and water-borne cortisol to identify effects of early-life experience. We found treatment differences in behavior across all assays: open field exploration, social cue investigation, dominant behavior, and subordinate behavior. Treatment did not affect cortisol. Principal components (PC) analysis revealed robust co-variation of behavior across contexts, including with cortisol, to form behavioral syndromes sensitive to early-life social experience. PC1 (25.1 %) differed by social partner number: juveniles with more partners (groups and socialized pairs) were more exploratory during the social cue investigation, spent less time in the territory, and were more interactive as dominants. PC5 (8.5 %) differed by stability: socialized pairs were more dominant, spent less time in and around the territory, were more socially investigative, and had lower cortisol than stable groups or pairs. Observations of the home tanks provided insights into the social experiences that may underlie these effects. These results contribute to our understanding of how early-life social experiences are accrued and exert strong, lasting effects on phenotype.</p>
Interaction-Based Behavioral Analysis in Twitter Social Network
<p>Literature studies usually use data sets consisting of data collected from many different metrics and user counts collected over different time periods. The data set used in this article was formed using completely up-to-date data obtained as a result of metrics measured in terms of scope and efficiency, sufficient and effective user counts, and filtering processes. To classify users correctly and make the classification performance high—in addition to parameters used in the literature such as tweets, account age, follower rank, average retweets and average likes—other parameters such as diameter, density, reciprocity, centralization and modularity were used. These metrics are the parameters that focus on a different area to reveal many aspects in which social network users interact. The data used to create the data set was collected from Twitter. The metric data forming the data set was extracted using Twitter Rest API V1.1 supporting search/tweet endpoints by means of the SocialBlade and Netlytic platforms.</p>

Impact of prolonged chronic social isolation stress on behavior and multifractal complexity of metabolic rate in Octodon degus
<p>We investigated the effects of prolonged chronic social isolation stress on behavioral, cognitive, and physiological performance in the social, long-lived rodent <em>Octodon degus</em>. Degu pups were separated into two social stress treatments: control (CTRL) and chronically isolated (CI) individuals from post-natal and post-weaning until adulthood. We quantified anxiety-like behavior and cognitive performance with behavioral tests. Additionally, we measured their basal metabolic rate (BMR). Data include behavioral tests and physiological traits (body mass and Basal Metabolic Rate).</p>
