Fluxes project at North Temperate Lakes LTER: Random lake survey 2004

The overarching goal of this project is to understand carbon and nutrient cycles for a landscape on which terrestrial and freshwater systems are intimately connected in multiple and reciprocal ways. In the Northern Highlands region of Wisconsin, they are studying a spatially complex landscape in which water features make up almost half of the land area, with wetlands (27% of land surface) and lakes (13%) both prevalent throughout the region, interspersed in upland forests. Weather and limnological data from a set of 170 lakes in the NHLD samples summer 2004. The sampled lakes were from a random stratified subsample (N=300 of 7588 total) of all the lakes in the NHLD.

The Northern Highlands Lake District (NHLD) is one of the few regions in the world with periodic comprehensive water chemistry data from hundreds of lakes spanning almost a century. Birge and Juday directed the first comprehensive assessment of water chemistry in the NHLD, sampling more than 600 lakes in the 1920s and 30s. These surveys have been repeated by various agencies and we now have data from the 1920s (UW), 1960s (WDNR), 1970s (EPA), 1980s (EPA), 1990s (EPA), and 2000s (NTL). The 28 lakes sampled as part of the Regional Lake Survey have been sampled by at least four of these regional surveys including the 1920s Birge and Juday sampling efforts. These 28 lakes were selected to represent a gradient of landscape position and shoreline development, both of which are important factors influencing social and ecological dynamics of lakes in the NHLD. This long-term regional dataset will lead to a greater understanding of whether and how large-scale drivers such as climate change and variability, lakeshore residential development, introductions of invasive species, or forest management have altered regional water chemistry. The purpose of the macrophyte survey is to identify, and quantify the types of aquatic plants within the various 28 regional survey lakes. The macrophyte survey consists of sampling macrophyte plants using a metal rake attached to a 15ft pole at approximately 140 spatially resolved points on a lake that are spread out in a grid like fashion, equally spaced from each other. Sampling locations were chosen such that the maximum depth at which macrophytes were surveyed was equal to or less than 15ft of water. Macrophyte sampling occurs in the latter part of the summer (after July 10) to ensure that macrophytes have had adequate time to grow and our sampling efforts capture the typical summer macrophyte community in each lake. Macrophyte sampling in these 28 lakes is ongoing and will be repeated approximately once every six years.

Color is measured in water samples that are filtered in the field through 0.45 um nucleopore membrane filters. A spectrophotometer is used to quantify color in the lab as absorbance (unitless) at 1 nm intervals between the wavelengths of 200 and 800 nm. Absorbance data are considered suspect for values greater than 2.

The regional lakes survey in 2015 followed the standard LTER protocol for standard water chemistry and biology. Samples were taken as close to solar noon as possible. Seven lakes had replicates performed, which were chosen at random.

North Temperate Lakes LTER: Northern Wisconsin boater survey, 2010 - 2012

Understanding public perceptions of the importance of environmental issues is crucial for gauging support for management activities. This survey assess the importance boaters placed on 16 water issues in a lake-rich region of northern Wisconsin. Sociodemographic characteristics, recreation specialization, place attachment, and attitudes concerning aquatic stewardship and invasive species management were then used to predict class membership. While anglers were most concerned about fishing quality, sightseers identified lakeshore development and loss of natural habitat. Groups also differed in their socio-demographic and attitudinal characteristics. The priorities of each group were substantially different from those of the overall sample. Accounting for differences in stakeholders’ environmental concerns may improve public involvement in water management initiatives by allowing managers to identify common concerns and prioritize important issues among multiple groups.

PIE LTER surveys of salt marsh breeding birds using point counts in Rowley and Newbury, Massachusetts

This data set contains the results of point count surveys of breeding birds in the salt marshes of the Plum Island Estuary. Surveys have been carried out each year in June beginning in 2004 and are ongoing. Currently six circles of 100 m radius are being surveyed. Three of the circles are in plots that had been regularly hayed and three in unhayed plots. Currently only one of the plots is regularly hayed. 85 species recorded as of 2020. Most frequently encountered are Agelaius phoeniceus, Ammospiza caudacuta, Tringa semipalmata.

Survey of small mammals using trapping data on all Virginia Coast Reserve barrier islands south of Parramore Island (inclusive) 1975-1978

During 1975 and 1977 live-trapping surveys of small-mammals of the Virginia Barrier Islands were conducted. Primary species encountered were Oryzomys palustris, Mus musculus, Micrutus pennsylvanicus, Rattus norvegicus, Cryptotis parva, and Peromyscus leucopus. Data is presented as primary trapping records giving the date of capture, island, species, sex and reproductive condition of the captured animal. Each animal was tagged to allow individual identification upon recapture. Each island was typically trapped for 8 days in two 4-day sessions.

Ethnic and Migrant Minorities (EMM) Survey Registry: All metadata records

<p>The <a href="https://ethmigsurveydatahub.eu/emmregistry/">Ethnic and Migrant Minorities (EMM) Survey Registry</a> is a free online tool that allows users to search for and learn about existing quantitative surveys undertaken with EMM (sub)populations conducted in 34 European countries, from 2000 onwards, through compiled survey-level metadata.</p> <p>The first version was produced by a team led by CEE (Sciences Po, CNRS) and jointly funded through the COST Action 16111 &ndash; ETHMIGSURVEYDATA (a network of more than 200 European researchers active in the ethnic and migration studies field), the Horizon 2020 infrastructure project&nbsp; SSHOC (within Task 9.2 on Ethnic and Migration Studies, within&nbsp; Work Package 9 on Data Communities) and the project FAIRETHMIGQUANT (an Open Science project funded by the French Agence Nationale de la Recherche, ANR).</p> <p>This specific record includes the metadata for 2,120 survey records as .dta, .sav and .csv files published on the Registry, as of 31.07.2025.</p>

<p><strong>Dataset on surface peat stoichiometry and physical properties in boreal undrained peatlands in Finland&nbsp;</strong></p><p><strong>Creators:&nbsp;</strong>Larmola T,&nbsp;Anttila J, Turunen J, Laine-Petäjäkangas A, Ovaskainen J, Laatikainen M&nbsp;</p><p>The dataset consists of peat properties in a subset of&nbsp;16 undrained peatland sites (32 peat samples)&nbsp;in Geological Survey of Finland (GTK) national peatland inventory. These sites were sampled between 2002 and 2017 and the subset selected from GTK peat sample archives. These 16 sites represented two pine-<i>Sphagnum-</i> dominated site types (IR, KR) and two treeless sedge fen types (VSN, RhSN) all in 4 replicates and sampled in 2 depths 20-40, 40-60cm).&nbsp;</p><p><strong>Peat analyses</strong> The peat samples were analyzed for C:H:N:S and ash concentration with Leco 628 CHNS analyzer following standard SFS EN13039 with FINAS accredited adjustments JOK3023. The dry matter content was analyzed after drying the sample at 105 ℃ and ash content based on loss on ignition at 550 ℃.&nbsp;The O concentration was determined by difference: %O = 100 - % (ash + total C + N + H + S).</p><p><strong>Stoichiometric calculations</strong>The O concentration was determined by difference: %O = 100 - % (ash + total C + N + H + S). Atomic ratios of&nbsp;C:N,&nbsp;H:C and O:C were calculated based on the individual sample mass values.&nbsp;The C oxidation state (Cox), the oxidative ratio (OR), and the degree of unsaturation (DU) were calculated following equations in the study by Masiello et al. The International Soundscape Database: An integrated multimedia database of urban soundscape surveys -- questionnaires with acoustical and contextual information

<h1>Introduction</h1> <p>The International Soundscape Database contains the results of a series of soundscape assessment campaigns carried out across Europe and China. The data collection process was conducted according to the <a href="https://www.mdpi.com/2076-3417/10/7/2397">SSID Protocol [1]</a> which integrates in situ questionnaires about users' soundscape experience, with binaural recordings, sound level meter readings, and 360 degree video. The core of this database are individual soundscape questionnaires collected for 3,500+ participants completed in situ in cities across Europe and China, and the psychoacoustic analysis of 30s binaural recordings which can be matched up to each questionnaire.</p> <p>The SSID Protocol was based on the ISO 12913&nbsp;standard for soundscape data collection [2]. For more information on the specifics of how this data is collected, please see [1].</p> <p>It is the intention that this dataset be added to and augmented with new locations, cities, and contexts in the future. This will be done both by the SSID team at University College London, but we also strongly welcome contributions from other researchers and practicioners. If a soundscape assessment is collected according to the SSID Protocol, it can be integrated with the rest of the database to form a large, cohesive, and ever-growing database of soundscape assessments.&nbsp;</p> <h2>Analysis</h2> <p>Code for exploring and analysing this dataset is included as part of the <a href="https://soundscapy.readthedocs.io/en/latest/">Soundscapy package</a>.</p> <h2>Included Files</h2> <p>This dataset incorporates surveys taken in multiple urban public spaces across several cities in Europe and China. These urban spaces include places like parks, urban squares, green spaces, and market streets. At each location, up to 100 questionnaires were collected over a series of multi-hour long sessions. Therefore the data is organised by LocationID, then SessionID, then GroupID.</p> <p>The basic directory structure and contents can be found below.&nbsp;</p> <h3>Survey Data (.csv)</h3> <p>'ISD v1.0 Data.csv' organises the data according to the labels given above.</p> <h3>Survey Metadata (.xlsx)</h3> <p>In addition a metadata file ('ISD v1.0 Metadata.xlsx') with photos and descriptions of each of the locations is provided. This metadata file also includes Data Dictionaries for each of the survey instrument versions included. These data dictionaries document precisely the questions asked and the available reponse labels and coding, along with the relevant translations.</p> <h3>Psychoacoustic Analysis (.csv)</h3> <p>The compiled csv file is formatted with a row for each individual participant's questionnaire response, then includes the psychoacoustic analysis of the 30s binaural recording taken while the participant was completing the questionnaire. Details about the psychoacoustic analyses is given in the 'Acoustic Settings' tab in the metadata file.</p> <p>The compiled survey and psychoacoustic analysis data is contained in 'ISD v1.0 Data.csv'. This is compiled from raw survey data files contained in 'Survey_Data', with individual cleaned survey and psychoacoustic data files included in 'Survey_Data/Interim_&lt;date&gt;'. The scripts for compiling this data are included in 'Scripts/'.</p> <h3>Sound Level Meter logs (.xlsx)</h3> <p>'SLM_&lt;city&gt;/' folders include session-long (i.e. ~3hrs) sound level meter log data in.xlsx files for each SessionID.</p> <h3>Binaural Recordings (32-bit floating point .wav)</h3> <p>'WAV_&lt;city&gt;/' folders include the ~30s binaural recordings in 32 bit floating point .wav format. Within each city folder are a set of LocationID folders containing their associated recordings. The wav files are titled with its GroupID, which is matched to the corresponding survey GroupIDs.&nbsp;</p> <h3>Cleaning and Compilation Scripts (.py)</h3> <p>Python code for cleaning and compiling the data from the raw survey data (within Survey_Data/source_data) are provided. EOSC Task Force on FAIR Metrics and Data Quality: FAIR Evaluation community survey 2023

<p>The EOSC-A FAIR Metrics and Data Quality Task Force (TF) supported the European Open Science Cloud Association (EOSC-A) by providing strategic directions on FAIRness (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable) and data quality. The Task Force conducted a survey&nbsp;using the <a href="https://ec.europa.eu/eusurvey/">EUsurvey tool</a> between 15.11.2022 and 18.01.2023, targeting both developers and users of FAIR assessment tools. The survey aimed at supporting the harmonisation of FAIR assessments, in terms of what it evaluated and how, across existing (and future) tools and services, as well as explore if and how a community-driven governance on these FAIR assessments would look like. The survey received 78 responses, mainly from academia, representing various domains and organisational roles. This is the anonymised survey dataset in csv format; most open-ended answers have been dropped. The codebook contains variable names, labels, and frequencies.</p>

Survey Data on Current Open Access Terms and Future Trends (2024)

<p><strong>Description:</strong><br>This dataset contains the analysis, codebook, and raw survey data from the 2024 survey <em>"Open Access &ndash; Current Terms and Future Areas of Focus"</em>. The survey aimed to gather perspectives from Open Access experts in the German-speaking region, focusing on the evaluation of current Open Access terminology, concepts, and emerging trends.</p> <p>The survey highlights how Open Access terminology has evolved over the past two decades and explores current perceptions regarding key terms in the Open Access discourse, as well as the anticipated future developments in this field. A total of 131 complete responses (<em>N=131</em>) were collected, providing valuable insights into the views of professionals working in Open Access publishing, information infrastructures, and scientific publishing houses.</p> <p><strong>Contents:</strong></p> <ol> <li><strong>codebook_oa_2024_2024-11-21.xlsx</strong>: The codebook, including detailed explanations of the variables, codes, and definitions used in the survey.</li> <li><strong>survey_results_oa_2024_2024-11-21.xlsx</strong>: Anonymized raw data from the survey, including both quantitative and qualitative responses from the participants.</li> <li><strong>values_oa_2024_2024-11-21.csv</strong>: CSV file containing the key terms and concepts identified by participants in response to the question on Open Access terminology.</li> <li><strong>values_oa_2024_2024-11-21.csv</strong>: An additional CSV file with detailed classification and analysis of the terms related to Open Access, including their frequency and significance based on participant responses.</li> </ol> <p><strong>Methodology:</strong><br>The survey was conducted via an online questionnaire distributed from September 7 to October 15, 2024, to professionals working in Open Access, both within information infrastructures (e.g., libraries) and in academic publishing houses. The survey gathered both qualitative and quantitative data, focusing on how Open Access terminology is understood and its future developments. Data for The UNCOVER Survey: A First-Look HST+JWST Catalog of Galaxy Redshifts and Stellar Populations Properties Spanning 0.2 ≲ z ≲ 15

<p>The recent UNCOVER survey with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) exploits the nearby cluster Abell 2744 to create the deepest view of our universe to date by leveraging strong gravitational lensing. In this work, we perform photometric fitting of more than 50,000 robustly detected sources out to z ~ 15. We show the redshift evolution of stellar ages, star formation rates, and rest-frame colors across the full range of&nbsp;0.2 &lt; z &lt; 15.&nbsp;The galaxy properties are inferred using the Prospector&nbsp;Bayesian inference framework using informative Prospector-beta&nbsp;priors on masses and star formation histories to produce joint redshift and stellar populations posteriors, and additionally lensing magnification is performed on-the-fly to ensure consistency with the scale-dependent priors. We show that this approach produces excellent photometric redshifts with NMAD&nbsp;~&nbsp;0.03, of a similar quality to the established photometric redshift code EAzY. In line with the open-source scientific objective of the Treasury survey, we publicly release the stellar populations catalog with this paper, derived from the photometric catalog adapting aperture sizes based on source profiles. This release includes posterior moments, maximum-likelihood spectra, star-formation histories, and full posterior distributions, offering a rich data set to explore the processes governing galaxy formation and evolution over a parameter space now accessible by JWST.</p>

Ten years (2013-2023) of fish assemblage data collected seasonally with underwater visual surveys on paired artificial and natural reefs

<p>The study of assembly patterns and dynamics of organisms has long remained a foundational theme in ecology. Further, the relationship between assemblages and different habitats can provide important insight on ecological processes and guide management and conservation efforts (e.g., restoration, protected areas). We conducted underwater visual surveys of reef fish assemblages at 14 sites in the eastern Gulf of Mexico, including eight that were paired artificial and natural reefs. By using a paired design, we controlled biotic (e.g., larval supply), abiotic (e.g., depth), and socio variables (e.g., fishing access) to isolate the effect of reef type. Trained scientific SCUBA divers with extensive experience with reef fishes from the broader tropical western Atlantic region conducted two to four 10-minute stationary surveys on the paired reefs each season (i.e., calendar quarters) for 10 years from spring 2013 to spring 2023. We also surveyed six additional artificial reefs from winter 2020 to spring 2023 that lacked natural reef pairs. During each survey, the divers identified and estimated the total lengths of all taxa<strong> </strong>observed within an imaginary cylinder around them. The imaginary cylinders had a radius up to 7.5 meters (depending on horizontal visibility) and extended from the seafloor to the highest visible water above the diver. During the period of study, we conducted a total of 1,349 surveys and counted 544,736 fish that represented 171 taxa (most at the species level). Analyses of these data have revealed habitat-specific heterogeneity of the fish assemblages at both taxonomic and functional trait levels, the importance of herbivory in structuring the benthos, and socio-ecological interactions in the system, among other findings. These data may be useful for other researchers interested in patterns and dynamics of populations and communities, functional traits, taxa-habitat relationships, and for parameterizing statistical, joint distribution, metacommunity, and ecosystem models. In addition, because many of the observed taxa<strong> </strong>are of management concern, they may be useful for researchers interested in fisheries science.
