Hourly weather data from the LTER Moist Acidic Tussock Experimental plots. The station was installed in 1990 in block 2 of the Toolik LTER experimental moist acidic tussock plots. The plots are located on a hillside near Toolik Lake (68 38' N, 149 36'W). Global solar radiation, photosynthetic active radiation, unfrozen precipitation, air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, and wind direction are measured at 3 meters. Additional sensors in greenhouses and shade houses plots measure air temperature, relative humidity and photosynthetic active radiation during the growing season. The sensors are read every minute and averaged or totaled every hour. .

Arthropods (spiders and insects) were collected three times during the 2013 summer using pitfall traps and vacuum sampling in plots fertilized with Nitrogen and Phosphorus for 24 years, and in control plots, in an experiment established near Toolik Field Station, Alaska. Pitfall traps were placed for 48-hour intervals; vacuum samples were taken in a 1m2 area. Collected invertebrates were counted and identified to order or family.

Effects of experimentally altered wolf spider densities and warming on soil microarthropods, litter decomposition, litter N, and soil nutrients near Toolik Field Station, AK in summer 2012

Predators can disproportionately impact the structure and function of ecosystems relative to their biomass. These effects may be exacerbated under warming in ecosystems like the Arctic, where the number and diversity of predators are low and small shifts in community interactions can alter carbon cycle feedbacks. Here we show that warming alters the effects of wolf spiders, a dominant tundra predator, on belowground litter decomposition and nutrient dynamics. Specifically, while high densities of wolf spiders result in faster litter decomposition under ambient temperatures, they result instead in slower decomposition under warming. Higher spider densities are also associated with elevated levels of available soil nitrogen, potentially benefitting plant production. Changes in decomposition rates under increased wolf spider densities are accompanied by trends toward fewer fungivorous Collembola under ambient temperatures and more Collembola under warming, suggesting that Collembola mediate the indirect effects of wolf spiders on decomposition. The unexpected reversal of wolf spider effects on Collembola and decomposition suggests that in some cases, warming does not simply alter the strength of top-down effects but instead induces a different trophic cascade altogether. Our results indicate that climate change-induced effects on predators can cascade through other trophic levels, alter critical ecosystem functions, and potentially lead to climate feedbacks with important global implications. Moreover, given the expected increase in wolf spider densities with climate change, our findings suggest that the observed cascading effects of this common predator on detrital processes could potentially buffer concurrent changes in decomposition rates.

Soil temperature data from the 1989 LTER Moist Acidic Tussock (MAT89) Experimental plots. The logging station was installed in 1990 in block 2 of a four block experimental block design. The plots are located on a hillside near Toolik Lake (68 38' N, 149 36'W). Two replicates depth profiles (10, 20 ,40 centimeters) were installed in each block 2 experimental plots. Frost heaving has caused uncertain depths of measurements for many of the profiles. This data set contains only the control profiles from 2008 to 2020.

Climate data from Arctic LTER Toolik Inlet Wet Sedge site, Toolik Field Station, Alaska 2012 to 2018.

Two Figaro TGS 2600 sensors were installed at the Toolik Wet Sedge site in late June 2012 to 2018. The TGS 2600 was the first low-cost solid state sensor that shows a weak response to ambient levels of methane (i.e., range ~1.8–2.7 µmol mol–1). Reference CH4 mole fractions were measured by a Fast Methane Analyser during the years 2012–2016 which was replace by a Fast Greenhouse Gas Analyzer (Los Gatos Research, Inc., San Jose, CA, U.S.A.) in 2016. Data were used in the Eugster et al. (2020) study on Long-term reliability of the Figaro TGS 2600 solid-state methane sensor under low Arctic conditions at Toolik lake, Alaska (doi:10.5194/amt-2019-402)

The Changing Seasonality of Arctic Stream Systems (CSASN) was active from 2010 to 2012. The CSASN goal was to quantify the relative influences of through flow, lateral inputs, and hyporheic regeneration on the seasonal fluxes C, N, and P in an arctic river network, and to determine how these influences might shift under seasonal conditions that are likely to be substantially different in the future. Point transects were done throughout the sampling season to determine different substrate and cover types on the stream bottom.
