Pedagogy of success: Perception in undergraduate and postgraduate students at a Peruvian university

Background: the objective of the study was to compare whether there are differences in the perception of undergraduate and postgraduate students about the pedagogy of success. Methods: This is non-experimental research with a comparative descriptive design, and a hypothetical deductive method was used. The Perception of Success Pedagogy questionnaire was applied as a data collection technique with a sample of fifty university students with 23 items based on three dimensions: Opportunity to learn (9 items), Feedback (8 items), and Consideration of the person. (6 items), with the following qualitative value scale: Always, Sometimes, and Never; the scale of quantitative value was from two to zero. To find the instrument's validity, it was subjected to expert judgment, calculating the content validity ratio for each item and considering the criteria of clarity and relevance. The instrument's reliability was determined using Cronbach's alpha, a high consistency between the items. For the questionnaire application, Google Forms was used to obtain fast, timely, and reliable answers. The data were processed through the SPSS V. 25. Results: the pedagogical support of postgraduate Teaching is superior to that of the undergraduate level; however, the undergraduate teacher stands out in listening and empathizing with the students. Conclusions: There are significant differences in the perception of the pedagogy of success among undergraduate and postgraduate university students; therefore, the application of this methodology is more promoted towards postgraduate students than to their undergraduate peers.

Qualification and teaching of peer-student tutors in undergraduate medical education: Does it affect the understanding and acquiring of CanMEDS competencies?

Objective: The Canadian Medical Education Directives for Specialists (CanMEDS), described by scientists of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, specify the competencies that medical students should acquire during their studies of human medicine. These include the skills of Medical Expert, Communicator, Collaborator, Manager, Professional, Health Advocate and Scholar. We investigated the opinion of former student tutors that are currently active as clinical residents to understand whether they acquired and applied the CanMEDS competencies more during their student tutoring activities or during their undergraduate medical training.

Methods: An online questionnaire with closed and open questions were distributed to residents with work experience as student tutors. A Likert scale was used to assess the relevance of each CanMEDS competency to their current employment and to evaluate the acquisition and application of each CanMEDS competency during undergraduate medical training in comparison to their peer-student tutor employment. We used the sign test for identify significant differences in the acquisition and application of CanMEDS competencies.

Results: Of one hundred and twenty-three tutors, twenty-four met the inclusion criteria and fourteen questionnaires were returned. Concerning acquiring the CanMEDS roles Collaborator, Communicator, Professional and Manager there was a significant difference in favour of peer-student tutor employment. Nearly all participants indicated that they noticed a general benefit from having worked as peer-student tutors.

Conclusion: We found that employment as a peer-student tutor is beneficial for the respondents in general and for the acquisition and application of several CanMEDS roles in particular.

"AI as an Ally?" : AI mediation tools to support undergraduates' argumentative skills

Argumentative skills are indispensable both personally and professionally to process complex information (CoI) relating to the critical reconstruction of meaning through critical thinking (CT). This remains a particularly relevant priority, especially in the age of social media and artificial intelligence-mediated information. Recently, the public dissemination of what has been called generative artificial intelligence (GenAI), with the particular example of ChatGPT (OpenAI, 2022), has made it even easier today to access and disseminate information, written or not, true or not. New tools are needed to critically address post-digital information abundance.

In this context, argumentative maps (AMs), which are already used to develop argumentative skills and critical thinking, are studied for multimodal and dynamic information visualization, comprehension, and reprocessing. In this regard, the entry of generative AI into university classrooms proposes a novel scenario of multimodality and technological dynamism.

Building on the Vygotskian idea of mediation and the theory of "dual stimulation" as applied to the use of learning technologies, the idea was to complement AMs with the introduction of a second set of stimuli that would support and enhance individual activity: AI-mediated tools. With AMs, an attempt has been made to create a space for understanding, fixing, and reconstructing information, which is important for the development of argumentative skills. On the other hand, by arranging forms of critical and functional interaction with ChatGPT as an ally in understanding, reformulating, and rethinking one's argumentative perspectives, a new and comprehensive argumentative learning process has been arranged, while also cultivating a deeper understanding of the artificial agents themselves.

Our study was based on a two-group quasi-experiment with 27 students of the “Research Methods in Education” course, to explore the role of AMs in fixing and supporting multimodal information reprocessing. In addition, by predicting the use of the intelligent chatbot ChatGPT, one of the most widely used GenAI technologies, we investigated the evolution of students' perceptions of its potential role as a “study companion” in information comprehension and reprocessing activities with a path to build a good prompt.

Preliminary analyses showed that in both groups, AMs supported the increase in mean CoI and CT levels for analog and digital information. However, the group with analog texts showed more complete reprocessing.
The interaction with the chatbot was analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively, and there emerged an initial positive reflection on the potential of ChatGPT and increased confidence in interacting with intelligent agents after learning the rules for constructing good prompts.

This Zenodo record follows the full analysis process with R (https://cran.r-project.org/bin/windows/base/ ) and Nvivo (https://lumivero.com/products/nvivo/) composed of the following datasets, script and results:

1.
