Graffiti preserved inside the church of Calatrava La Vieja (Carrión de Calatrava, Spain). Among other drawings we can see several five-pointed stars. Since the Middle Ages it was used as a protective amulet. In the lower part it is possible to clearly see a bow shooting an arrow and to its right several fortifications crowned with triangular battlements. Calatrava La Vieja preserves one of the most important medieval graffiti groups in Castilla-La Mancha region. 3D model made in Reality Capture using 53 images. 15th C. Ship Graffiti, Calatrava la Vieja, Esp
Medieval graffiti from Calatrava la Vieja, Castilla-La Mancha, Spain. Late medieval Christian period (15th century CE). They were discovered in 1984, during the excavation works carried out under the direction of the architect Miguel Fisac. They are located in the crypt of the Santa María La Blanca Church, inside the alcazar, and were made with a sharp object in the plaster of the south wall of the crypt. They represent five-pointed stars, geometric forms, and several groups of lines. The main motif is a Latin sailboat represented with precision and sense of detail, probably as a votive graffiti. Catapult projectile excavated from the citadel in Calatrava La Vieja (Carrión de Calatrava, Spain). These projectiles were used during the Middle Ages to besiege and attack fortresses, as their impact could knock down walls and towers. Aljibe (Cistern) of Calatrava La Vieja, Spain
This aljibe (cistern) was built inside the Calatrava La Vieja (Spain) fortress in early Islamic times to guarantee water supply. In the last 1/3 of the 13th century it became a prison. During imprisonment, the captives left many drawings on the walls, made with coal or incised with a punch. These drawings represent scenes of hunting or war on horseback, calatravo warriors, birds, various types of weapons, and phrases in Arabic. Access to this aljibe is not available to the general public due to conservation concerns. 3D model combines photogrammetry (Sony A7Riii) and laser scanning (FARO S70) datasets, processed in Reality Capture software. Stamped jar fragment, Calatrava la Vieja, Esp.
Stamped jar fragment from Calatrava la Vieja, Castilla-La Mancha, Spain. Islamic almohad period (1195-1212 CE). This artifact was found in the 2017 excavations in the south-east sector of the medina, next to the western wall of the alcázar. The jar ("yabiya" in arabic) was the most common container for the storage and transport of liquids and solids during the andalusian period in the Iberian Peninsula. To its utilitarian function, it added a decorative value, particularly since the 12th century, when this kind of pieces were profusely decorated with printed stamps with epigraphic, geometric or plant motifs. In this case, the jar has a horizontal band around the base of the neck, stamped with epigraphic motifs. After the jar was broken, some of its fragments were burned, and others not. They were discovered in 1984, during the excavation works carried out under the direction of the architect Miguel Fisac. They are located in the crypt of the Santa María La Blanca Church, inside the alcazar, and were made with a sharp object in the plaster of the south wall of the crypt. They represent several five-pointed stars, geometric forms and groups of parallel lines. The main motif is a man on horseback. There is also a small human figure in frontal view, dressed in a tunic. Anthropomorphic Figure, Calatrava la Vieja, Esp.
Head of a small anthropomorphic figure made of fired clay from Calatrava la Vieja, Castilla-La Mancha, Spain. Islamic almohad period (1195-1212 CE). This artifact was found in the 2008 excavations in the south-east sector of the medina, next to the western wall of the alcázar. The head consists of a small sphere of clay modeled by hand. The eyes, eyebrows and nose were made with small bands of clay. The mouth is just an incision in the fresh clay. This is a fragment of a ceramic miniature perhaps from a kind of vessel, a toy or even a whistle. To this type of pieces, quite common in the andalusian culture, are attributed ludic, symbolic and ornamental functions. Catalog No. CV 08 26 794 2. This artifact was found in the 2009 excavations in the south-east sector of the medina, next to the western wall of the alcázar. Medieval graffiti from Calatrava la Vieja, Castilla-La Mancha, Spain. Late medieval Christian period (15th century CE). They were discovered in 1984, during the excavation works carried out under the direction of the architect Miguel Fisac. They are located in the crypt of the Santa María La Blanca Church, inside the alcazar, and were made with a sharp object in the plaster of the south wall of the crypt. They represent five-pointed stars, geometric forms, and several groups of lines. The main motif is a standing man who grasps a crossbow armed with a "virote" and points it at a deer located at a certain distance, which appears represented at a smaller size to give an idea of perspective.
