Data from: LoRaD: Marginal likelihood estimation with haste (but no waste)
<p>The Lowest Radial Distance (LoRaD) method is a modification of the recently-introduced Partition-Weighted Kernel method for estimating the marginal likelihood of a model, a quantity important for Bayesian model selection. For analyses involving a fixed tree topology, LoRaD improves upon the Steppingstone or Thermodynamic Integration (Path Sampling) approaches now in common use in phylogenetics because it requires sampling only from the posterior distribution, avoiding the need to sample from a series of <em>ad hoc</em> power posterior distributions, and yet is more accurate than other fast methods such as the Generalized Harmonic Mean (GHM) method. We show that the method performs well in comparison to the Generalized Steppingstone method on an empirical fixed-topology example from molecular phylogenetics involving 180 parameters. The LoRaD method can also be used to obtain the marginal likelihood in the variable-topology case if at least one tree topology occurs with sufficient frequency in the posterior sample to allow accurate estimation of the marginal likelihood conditional on that topology.</p>
TRANSFORM video - Waste pilot using citizen science in Catalonia
<p>A citizen science project to improve the selective waste collection system in Mollet del Vallès Citizens have a key role in political decision-making and the TRANSFORM pilot project is a clear example of this. TRANSFORM Catalan cluster carried out a citizen science pilot in the city of Mollet del Vallès to contribute to improving the selective collection of municipal waste. Mapping of solar panels and Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant Accident-associated radioactive waste storage in 2022 and 2023, Fukushima, Japan
<p>The policy of reconstruction after the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Plant accident has led to a radical transformation of the landscapes of Fukushima Prefecture especially in two aspects (Asanuma-Brice et al., 2023). The first is related to an extensive decontamination policy which resulted in the removal of more than 13 million m<sup>3</sup> of contaminated soil (MOEJ, 2021). The second is the widespread installation of solar panels, which demonstrate the transition decided by the Prefecture and the inhabitants in terms of energy policy.</p> <p>A systematic mapping of these features was carried out from the satellite imagery of Google Map (2023) within the boundaries of Fukushima Prefecture. The objective was to highlight the evolution of specific land use features that are captured imprecisely by automatic detection mapping. We focused on the main visible change in the landscape in terms of land use since Fukushima Daiichi nuclear accident: contaminated waste disposal areas and solar panel fields. These zones were delineated allowing a calculation of the corresponding surface areas (m<sup>2</sup>).<strong> The dataset is composed of 4 shapefile layers: contaminated waste deposits in 2022 and 2023, solar panels in 2022 and 2023. For the year 2022 the last update was conducted in July 2022 and for the year 2023 the last update took place in March 2023.</strong></p> <p>As the land use is in constant and rapid transition (Asanuma-Brice, 2021), we considered as contaminated waste deposits, the permanent storage centers as well as the sites where there are still bags of contaminated waste in varying numbers, knowing that they will be removed and stored on other dedicated sites (Evrard et al., 2019). This choice was made to potentially identify, when the map was updated, the future uses of the land where this waste was stored temporarily.</p> <p>This dataset is part of a larger project that aims to provide the community with an interactive tool (https://mitatelab.cnrs.fr/mitate-labs-map-of-solar-panel-and-contaminated-wasted-land/) that makes available various types of information essential to the analysis of the reconstruction, such as: the delineation of the evacuated zone (which evolved throughout time), the delineation of the municipality boundaries affected by the reconstruction policy, the main services found in these localities, the location of the memorials of the disaster in the zone, as well as the geo-localization of the soil/sediment samples collected by other Mitate lab researchers in order to investigate the redistribution of radionuclides in the environment (Evrard et al., 2021).</p>
Raw Data for D3.4: Design and performance of vacuum degasification for agricultural residues and food-waste treatment for nitrogen depletion /recovery
<p>The data contains the test results from the conducted tests at the PONDUS-N pilot plant for vacuum degasification from Circular Agronomics WP2/3. It includes 4 major test series A-D with multiple triplicate runs in each series. Analytical data of batch testing and plant parameters were recorded and put into the file to accurately describe the time course of the tests. The boundary conditions of the test runs are described in D3.4.</p>
Locations of dog waste bins in Zagreb, Croatia
<p>Locations of dog waste bins (point vector layer), dog parks, and green areas for walking dogs off-leash (both polygon vector layers) in the city of Zagreb were collected during the field survey in 2020 based on available government sources. The upload consists of .shp, .geojson, and .csv files for the point vector layer and .shp and .geojson files for polygon vector layers. The CRS for all layers is WGS84 (EPSG:4326).</p>

<p>This is a dynamic, short video highlighting the PRODIGEES research secondment of Dr. Ariel Macaspac Hernandez. Dr. Hernandez seconded to Fundação Getúlio Vargas (FGV) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The exchange lasted one month, but left Dr. Hernandez with enough time to deeply explore the potential role of digitalization in curbing food waste and loss (FWL) in multiple regions of Brazil.</p>

Waste not, want not: microsatellites remain an economical and informative technology for conservation genetics
<p>Comparisons of microsatellite and single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) have found that SNPs outperform microsatellites in population genetic analyses, calling into question the continued utility of microsatellites in population and landscape genetics. Yet highly polymorphic markers may be of value in species that have reduced genetic variation. This study repeated analyses previously done using microsatellites with SNPs developed from ddRAD sequencing in the black-capped vireo source-sink system. SNPs provided greater resolution of genetic diversity, population differentiation, and migrant detection but could not reconstruct parentage relationships due to insufficient heterozygosities. The biological inferences made by both sets of markers were similar: asymmetrical gene flow from source sites to the remaining sink sites. With the landscape genetic analyses, we found different results between the two molecular markers, but associations of the top environmental features (riparian, open habitat, agriculture, and human development) with dispersal estimates were shared between marker types. Despite the higher precision of SNPs, we find that microsatellites effectively uncover population processes and patterns and are superior for parentage analyses in this species with reduced genetic diversity. This study illustrates the continued applicability and relevance of microsatellites in population genetic research.</p>

Quantification of Food Waste Disposal in the United States: A Meta-Analysis
This data set is the result of a systematic review of studies on food waste disposed in the United States, an issue which major consequences for social, nutritional, economic, and environmental issues. It was created to determine how much food is discarded in the U.S., and to determine if specific factors drive increased disposal. By applying meta-analytic tools on it this dataset, it was found that the aggregate proportion of food waste in U.S. municipal solid waste from 1995 to 2013 was 0.147 (95% CI 0.137–0.157) of total disposed waste, which is lower than that estimated by U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for the same period (0.176). Further, that the proportion of food waste increased significantly with time, and there were no significant differences in food waste between rural and urban samples, or between commercial/institutional and residential samples. These results are published in the study titled Quantification of Food Waste Disposal in the United States: A Meta-Analysis (Thyberg et al., 2015).

Data from: Effect of yeast addition on the biogas production performance of a food waste anaerobic digestion system
<p>Food waste contains numerous easily degradable components, and anaerobic digestion is prone to acidification and instability. This work aimed to investigate the effect of adding yeast on biogas production performance, when substrate is added after biogas production is reduced. The results showed that the daily biogas production increased 520 ml and 550 ml by adding 2.0% (VS) of activated yeast on the 12th and 37th day of anaerobic digestion, respectively, and the gas production was relatively stable. In the control group without yeast, the increase of gas production was significantly reduced. After the second addition of substrate and yeast, biogas production only increased 60 ml compared with that before the addition. After fermentation, the biogas production of yeast group also increased by 33.2% compared with the control group. Results of the analysis of indicators, such as volatile organic acids, alkalinity, and propionic acid, showed that the stability of the anaerobic digestion system of the yeast group was higher. Thus, the yeast group is highly likely to recover normal gas production when the biogas production is reduced, and substrate is added. The results provide a reference for experiments on the industrialisation of continuous anaerobic digestion to take tolerable measures when the organic load of the feed fluctuates dramatically.</p>
