The avian taxonomic group exhibits remarkable diversity, consisting of 63 species that are further categorized into 32 families and 12 orders.

Notably, during the excursion , the elusive black-tailed crake was spotted, which is a rare find not typically observed in any other regions of India.

Resource Contacts

Name: Arjan Basu Roy

Position: Secretary

Organization: Nature Mates-Nature Club

Address: 6/7 Bijoygarh Kolkata-700032

Email: basuroyarjan@gmail.com

Orcid : https://orcid.org/0000-0001-9872-3562

Home page: http://www.naturematesindia.org/

Name: Lina Chatterjee

Position: Research Associate

Organization: Nature Mates-Nature Club

Address: 6/7 Bijoygarh Kolkata-700032

Email: lina.linachatterjee@gmail.com

Orcid : https://orcid.org/0000-0002-5626-5046

Home page: http://www.naturematesindia.org/

Name: Tarak Samanta

Position: Research Associate

Organization: Nature Mates-Nature Club

Address: 6/7 Bijoygarh Kolkata-700032

Email: taraksamanta995@gmail.com

Orcid : https://orcid.org/0000-0001-6809-0549

Home page: http://www.naturematesindia.org/

Name: Rishin Basu Roy

Position: Researcher

Organization: Nature Mates-Nature Club

Address: 6/7 Bijoygarh Kolkata-700032

Email: wildrishin@gmail.com

Orcid : https://orcid.org/0000-0002-9638-818X

Home page: http://www.naturematesindia.org/

Name: Nivedita Sengupta

Position: Intern

Organization: Nature Mates-Nature Club

Address: 6/7 Bijoygarh Kolkata-700032

Email: niveditasngpta.ns@gmail.com

Orcid : https://orcid.org/0000-0003-1085-7385

Home page: http://www.naturematesindia.org/

Name: Vijay Barve

Position: Research Advisor

Organization: Nature Mates-Nature Club

Address: 6/7 Bijoygarh Kolkata-700032

Email: vijay.barve@gmail.com

Orcid : https://orcid.org/0000-0002-4852-2567

Home page: http://www.naturematesindia.org/

Avian diversity study (water birds) of Kamarganti Bheries, Haroa, North 24 parganas, West Bengal, India during winter season

The Nature Mates Nature Club has released a dataset entitled "Avian diversity study (water birds) of Kamarganti Bheries, Haroa, North 24 parganas, West Bengal, India during winter season"

Bheries are the type of fisheries generally practiced in low land impounded with earthen embankments all round.

The age-old bheri-culture has emerged in North 24 Parganas District in its south and eastern skirts centering the lower course of the Bidyadhari River. Salinity in bheri-water is sourced from brackish sea-water entered through rivers and canals..

The district has 22 community development (CD) blocks, though brackish water bheri fishery is usually found to exist in its 13 blocks in the south and eastern skirts.

This dataset is concerned with one such area, Kamarganti,Haroa,North 24 Parganas.

A list of all the birds identified during a biodiversity survey carried out in the year 2023 is included in the dataset. During the survey Red Necked Phalarope (Phalaropus lobatus) was recorded which is a very rare bird in West Bengal.

Species or genus-level identifications have been made for every species. There are 42 bird species total, with records of them in 16 different families and 10 different orders.

This study can give a future scope in understanding how bheries affect the biodiversity of an area.

Resource Contacts

Name: Arjan Basu Roy

Position: Secretary

Organization: Nature Mates-Nature Club

Address: 6/7 Bijoygarh Kolkata-700032

Email: basuroyarjan@gmail.com

Orcid : https://orcid.org/0000-0001-9872-3562

Home page: http://www.naturematesindia.org/

Name: Lina Chatterjee

Position: Research Associate

Organization: Nature Mates-Nature Club

Address: 6/7 Bijoygarh Kolkata-700032

Email: lina.linachatterjee@gmail.com

Orcid : https://orcid.org/0000-0002-5626-5046

Home page: http://www.naturematesindia.org/

Name: Tarak Samanta

Position: Research Associate

Organization: Nature Mates-Nature Club

Address: 6/7 Bijoygarh Kolkata-700032

Email: taraksamanta995@gmail.com

Orcid : https://orcid.org/0000-0001-6809-0549

Home page: http://www.naturematesindia.org/

Name: Nivedita Sengupta

Position: Intern

Organization: Nature Mates-Nature Club

Address: 6/7 Bijoygarh Kolkata-700032

Email: niveditasngpta.ns@gmail.com

Orcid : https://orcid.org/0000-0003-1085-7385

Home page: http://www.naturematesindia.org/

Name: Vijay Barve

Position: Research Advisor

Organization: Nature Mates-Nature Club

Address: 6/7 Bijoygarh Kolkata-700032

Email: vijay.barve@gmail.com

Orcid : https://orcid.org/0000-0002-4852-2567

Home page: http://www.naturematesindia.org/

Avian diversity study of Kharibari Wetland and its adjacent Bheries, Kamduni, North 24 Parganas, West Bengal, India

The dataset “Avian diversity study of Kharibari Wetland and its adjacent Bheries, Kamduni, North 24 Parganas, West Bengal, India” is published by Nature Mates Nature Club

The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) defines wetland as, “a place in which the land is covered by water — salt, fresh or somewhere in between — either seasonally or permanently. It functions as its distinct ecosystem.”

Bheries are the type of fisheries generally practiced in low land impounded with earthen embankments all round.

The age-old bheri-culture has emerged in North 24 Parganas District in its south and eastern skirts centering the lower course of the Bidyadhari River. Salinity in bheri-water is sourced from brackish sea-water entered through rivers and canals.

Kolkata has several wetlands in its vicinity and one of them is the Kamduni wetlands of Kharibari, near Barasat.

The wetland and bheries of Kharibari is a visiting spot for many local and migratory birds. Some of these birds are from the Himalayan foothills, others travel from central Asia.

During spring, the waters in the wetlands recede making food easily available for the water birds. This attracts a host of long and short-distance migrant birds along with local birds.

This dataset includes all the birds recorded from kamduni wetlands of kharibari and the bheries present in the vicinity.

A list of all the birds identified during a biodiversity survey carried out between November 2017 to April 2018 is included in this dataset.

All the birds have been identified upto species level. There are 56 bird species total, with records of them in 18 different families and 10 different orders.

Resource Contacts

Name: Arjan Basu Roy

Position: Secretary

Organization: Nature Mates-Nature Club

Address: 6/7 Bijoygarh Kolkata-700032

Email: basuroyarjan@gmail.com

Orcid : https://orcid.org/0000-0001-9872-3562

Home page: http://www.naturematesindia.org/

Name: Lina Chatterjee

Position: Research Associate

Organization: Nature Mates-Nature Club

Address: 6/7 Bijoygarh Kolkata-700032

Email: lina.linachatterjee@gmail.com

Orcid : https://orcid.org/0000-0002-5626-5046

Home page: http://www.naturematesindia.org/

Name: Tarak Samanta

Position: Research Associate

Organization: Nature Mates-Nature Club

Address: 6/7 Bijoygarh Kolkata-700032

Email: taraksamanta995@gmail.com

Orcid : https://orcid.org/0000-0001-6809-0549

Home page: http://www.naturematesindia.org/

Name: Nivedita Sengupta

Position: Intern

Organization: Nature Mates-Nature Club

Address: 6/7 Bijoygarh Kolkata-700032

Email: niveditasngpta.ns@gmail.com

Orcid : https://orcid.org/0000-0003-1085-7385

Home page: http://www.naturematesindia.org/

Name: Vijay Barve

Position: Research Advisor

Organization: Nature Mates-Nature Club

Address: 6/7 Bijoygarh Kolkata-700032

Email: vijay.barve@gmail.com

Orcid : https://orcid.org/0000-0002-4852-2567

Home page: http://www.naturematesindia.org/

Sample study on Avian diversity of Chupi Oxbow Lake, Purbasthali, Purba Bardhaman, West Bengal

The Nature Mates Nature Club has released a dataset entitled "Sample study on Avian diversity of Chupi Oxbow Lake, Purbasthali, Purba Bardhaman, West Bengal"

The Purbasthali, also known as Chupir Char or beel locally, covers 2.19 km of water and stretches from 23°25′54′′ to 23°27′54′′N and 88°19′45′′ to 88°21′54′′E. (Mandal et al. 2018). In West Bengal’s lower Gangetic delta, the wetland is situated between the districts of Nadia and Purba Barddhaman (Mandal & Siddique, 2018). Due to its link with the river at its southern end across a narrow strait, this water body has a distinctive combination of lacustrine (lentic) and riverine (lotic) habitats (Ganesan & Khan 2007). The lake’s crescent-shaped shape was created between 1989 and 1991 as a result of the lateral displacement of the river stream and concurrent erosion and deposition processes (Mandal & Siddique, 2018).

According to the Ramsar classification, the wetland of Purbasthali (Chupir Char), which is physiographically an oxbow lake, is designated as a marsh (jheel) of Gangetic Alluvial Plains (Mandal & Siddique 2018). The habitat of an oxbow lake is typically Adjacent to a river and favorable for the establishment of numerous species of fauna and plants (Ward et al. 1999; Stella et al. 2011). This lake is connected to the River Bhagirathi by a little waterway. As usual, this oxbow lake offers a good habitat for various water bird species.

The lake is currently threatened by habitat loss due to the overgrowing of Water Hyacinth.

Large numbers of birds in and around Chupi Lake were studied. This dataset includes all the water birds recorded on the 21st of January 2024.

All the birds are identified up to the species level. 32 species of birds belonging to 10 orders and 15 families were recorded from this oxbow lake.

Resource Contacts

Name: Arjan Basu Roy

Position: Secretary

Organization: Nature Mates-Nature Club

Address: 6/7 Bijoygarh Kolkata-700032

Email: basuroyarjan@gmail.com

Orcid : https://orcid.org/0000-0001-9872-3562

Home page: http://www.naturematesindia.org/

Name: Abhik Rong

Position: Intern

Organization: Nature Mates-Nature Club

Address: 6/7 Bijoygarh Kolkata-700032

Email: amritorong@gmail.com

Orcid : https://orcid.org/0009-0000-1414-0408

Home page: http://www.naturematesindia.org/

Name: Lina Chatterjee

Position: Research Associate

Organization: Nature Mates-Nature Club

Address: 6/7 Bijoygarh Kolkata-700032

Email: lina.linachatterjee@gmail.com

Orcid : https://orcid.org/0000-0002-5626-5046

Home page: http://www.naturematesindia.org/

Name: Tarak Samanta

Position: Research Associate

Organization: Nature Mates-Nature Club

Address: 6/7 Bijoygarh Kolkata-700032

Email: taraksamanta995@gmail.com

Orcid : https://orcid.org/0000-0001-6809-0549

Home page: http://www.naturematesindia.org/

Name: Nivedita Sengupta

Position: Intern

Organization: Nature Mates-Nature Club

Address: 6/7 Bijoygarh Kolkata-700032

Email: niveditasngpta.ns@gmail.com

Orcid : https://orcid.org/0000-0003-1085-7385

Home page: http://www.naturematesindia.org/

Name: Vijay Barve

Position: Research Advisor

Organization: Nature Mates-Nature Club

Address: 6/7 Bijoygarh Kolkata-700032

Email: vijay.barve@gmail.com

Orcid : https://orcid.org/0000-0002-4852-2567

Home page: http://www.naturematesindia.org/
