Tarmachan Automatic Weather Station (National Trust for Scotland/University of Dundee)

Mountain weather station on the south-facing slopes of Meall nan Tarmachan on the National Trust for Scotland's National Nature Reserve (NNR). The site is at 710 m above sea level, overlooking Loch Tay. Snowcover has historically been an important part of the climate of the site, but in recent years has become increasingly transient.

The NNR is the most important in Scotland for its arctic alpine flora, we are noticing changes in species distribution and to habitats indicative of the effects of climate change. Hence the establishment of this weather station to allow changes in climate at altitude to be monitored. This site installed May 2018 ~20 m beyond the headwall of a disused quarry. Winds may cause undercatch of rainfall (though the gauge is of an aerodynamic design) and more particularly snow. Recorded wind speeds may underestimate winds generally around the mountain owing to effects of the quarry wall.

An earlier site was operated nearby in the early 2000s but sadly data have been lost.

Data are recorded on a Campbell Scientific CR1000 data logger, running with 10 s scan rate and 15 min logging interval.

Snow depths may be inferred by examining TCDT (temperature-corrected depth to target) data - obtained from a SR50A sensor on an arm c. 2.3 m above ground. These are available only for limited periods in 2019 and again winter 2021/22, and are now discontinued. However, snow cover can be inferred by examining the differential between air temperature and ground temperature: the ground sensor is insulated when snow covers the ground.

Sensor details: see metdata

Real-time data are displayed graphically at https://hydro-data.dundee.ac.uk/tarmachan (no downloads)

Data and source code for Automatic generation of a large dictionary with concreteness/abstractness ratings based on a small human dictionary

We present a method for automatic ranking concreteness of words and propose an approach to significantly decrease amount of expert assessment. The method has been evaluated on a large test set for English. The quality of the constructed dictionaries is comparable to the expert ones. The correlation between predicted and expert ratings is higher comparing to the state-of-the-art methods.

Dvoice : An open source dataset for Automatic Speech Recognition on Moroccan dialectal Arabic

Dialectal Voice is a community project initiated by AIOX Labs to facilitate voice recognition by Intelligent Systems. Today, the need for AI systems capable of recognizing the human voice is increasingly expressed within communities. However, we note that for some languages such as Darija, there are not enough voice technology solutions. To meet this need, we then proposed to establish this program of iterative and interactive construction of a dialectal database open to all in order to help improve models of voice recognition and generation.

A web-based tool for automatically linking clinical trials to their publications - example calculation

Objective: Evidence synthesis teams, physicians, policy makers, and patients and their families all have an interest in following the outcomes of clinical trials and would benefit from being able to evaluate both the results posted in trial registries and in the publications that arise from them. Manual searching for publications arising from a given trial is a laborious and uncertain process. We sought to create a statistical model to automatically identify PubMed articles likely to report clinical outcome results from each registered trial in ClinicalTrials.gov.

Materials and Methods: A machine learning-based model was trained on pairs (publications linked to specific registered trials). Multiple features were constructed based on the degree of matching between the PubMed article metadata and specific fields of the trial registry, as well as matching with the set of publications already known to be linked to that trial.

Results: Evaluation of the model using NCT-linked articles as gold standard showed that they tend to be top ranked (median best rank = 1.0), and 91% of them are ranked in the top ten.

Discussion: Based on this model, we have created a free, public web based tool at http://arrowsmith.psych.uic.edu/cgi-bin/arrowsmith_uic/TrialPubLinking/trial_pub_link_start.cgi that, given any registered trial in ClinicalTrials.gov, presents a ranked list of the PubMed articles in order of estimated probability that they report clinical outcome data from that trial. The tool should greatly facilitate studies of trial outcome results and their relation to the original trial designs.

Automatic taxonomic identification based on the Fossil Image Dataset (>415,000 images) and deep convolutional neural networks

This is a Fossil Image Dataset, which contains >415000 images. A total of 50 clades were labeled, with a final 90% accuracy. We used the web crawler to download fossil images from the Internet. We declare that all the collected images are used for academic purposes only. If anyone wants to use this dataset, please agree on the Terms of access for the Fossil Image Dataset (FID). We uploaded two datasets: FID (contains 0.415 million images) and reduced-FID (60 thousand images, 1200 for each clade). Requirements of necessary preinstalled Python libraries, algorithms for analysis, and the model weights are available at https://github.com/XiaokangLiuCUG/Fossil_Image_Dataset.

Weights for automatic two-dimensional bedrock fracture trace mapping from outcrop images

This file contains weights for automatic two-dimensional bedrock fracture trace mapping. The weights have been trained on manually mapped traces (https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.7077574) that were digitized from UAV-acquired drone orthomosaics from along the shoreline of Loviisa, South-East Finland (https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.7077518). Code for automatic mapping and weights generation is available on GitHub (https://github.com/nialov/ALSA).

Data is published as Hierarchical Data Format, version 5 (HDF5).

The work in automatic mapping was done as part of a Geological Survey of
Finland project, Kallioperän Rikkonaisuus, during 2021-2022.
