Data from: In the mix: Patterns of warthog herding behaviour in single and mixed-species herds

Warthogs occur in single- and mixed-species herds, however, the frequency at which they form each herd type, their most common heterospecific herd mates, and the position of warthogs within mixed-species herds is largely unknown. To address this, we observed warthog herding patterns and found them in mixed-species herds ~50% of the time, and that impala were their most common heterospecific herd mate. There was no significant difference in the number of warthogs between herd types, however, total herd size of mixed-species herds was significantly larger single-species herds. Finally, warthogs most commonly positioned themselves such that they were surrounded by heterospecifics by 180 degrees.
