Tree stem diameter and height of Araucaria araucana, Nothofagus pumilio and Nothofagus dombeyi in mixed stands affected to different levels by anthropogenic disturbance in south-central Chile

<p><em><strong>Context: </strong></em>Around half of the <em>Araucaria-Nothofagus</em> forests in Chile are affected by anthropogenic disturbances such as logging, grazing, and seed harvesting, causing forest structure to become more heterogeneous. This can critically affect natural regeneration and stand development. It also challenges forest management and yield estimations, involving tree height predictions. The data allow to assess the impact of anthropogenic disturbances on forest structure and to identify optimal tree height models and calibration designs. Based on the data provided, a general workflow for this purpose was developed and published on GitHub as R software (Zhou &amp; Zwanzig 2022).</p> <p><em><strong>Location: </strong></em>Mixed <em>Araucaria-Nothofagus</em> forests of the Andes Cordillera in the Araucaria Region in south-central Chile. Latitude, longitude and altitude of the plots is provided in the data table.</p> <p><em><strong>Taxon:</strong></em> Monkey Puzzle tree (<em>Araucaria araucana</em> (Molina) K.Koch),&nbsp;Lenga Beech (<em>Nothofagus pumilio</em> (Poepp. &amp; Endl.) Krasser), Coigue (<em>Nothofagus dombeyi</em> (Mirb.) Oerst.)</p> <p><em><strong>Methods:</strong></em> A total of twelve stands were studied at four different sites and classified into four different intensities of anthropogenic disturbance depending on the intensity of the combined effects of logging, grazing and seed harvesting. In 25 to 36 plots per stand, horizontal point sampling measurements of stem diameter as well as of height of selected trees were carried out using a basal area factor of 4 m&sup2; per hectare. Diameter at breast height (DBH, in cm) was measured for all selected trees and total tree height (HT, in m) was measured for one-third of them using a Haga device.</p> <p>For ten of the plots, in which no trees were found by horizontal point sampling, &#39;NA&#39; is entered for species and no values are given for DBH and HT in the data table.</p> <p><em><strong>Funding:</strong></em> The field data collection was funded through the&nbsp;project 016/2019 &ldquo;Indicadores fenol&oacute;gicos y estructurales de alteraci&oacute;n de h&aacute;bitat en bosques de <em>Araucaria</em>&rdquo;, being part of the Fondo de Investigaci&oacute;n del Bosque Nativo (FIBN) of the Corporaci&oacute;n Nacional Forestal (CONAF) and the Ministry of Agriculture of Chile.</p> <p><em><strong>Contributions:</strong></em> JH, PC and AP conceived the field study and acquired the funds;&nbsp;EK, JH, PC and AP performed the empirical observations; XZ, EK and MZ reviewed and processed the data collection for publication.</p>

Data from: Warming had contrasting effects on the importance of facilitative interactions with a cushion nurse species on native and non-native species in the high-Andes of central Chile

<p>Alpine habitats are regarded as particularly vulnerable to the effects of climate change. On one hand, global warming is supposed to contributes to alpine environments becoming less stressful. On the other hand, altered snowpack due to warmer temperatures can intensify the stress in these habitats. The presence of non-native plants on some of these habitats is due to the facilitative effects exerted by native nurse plants, becoming an additional threat. According to the stress gradient hypothesis the importance of facilitative interactions with nurse species is expected to diminish as environmental harshness decreases due to climate change, yet remains important if climate change heightens the stress in alpine habitats. However, the responses also depend on climate change's impact on the nurse species. We conducted an experimental warming experiment in the Andes of the central Chile to assess the effects of warmer temperatures on the growth, reproduction and photochemical efficiency of the cushion nurse plant Azorella madreporica. Further we performed a cushion removal experiment involving three native species (Gamocarpha ventosa, Nocaccea magellanica and Rytidosperma pictum) and two non-native species (Cerastium arvense and Taraxacum officinale) to assess whether facilitative interactions changed with warming. We expected that under warmer conditions facilitation continued be important for the native species but decreased for the non-natives as the latter are abundant at warmer low elevations. We found that warmer conditions increased the photochemical efficiency and growth of the nurse cushions. Removal of cushions resulted in high mortality rates for all species. However, under warmer conditions, native species exhibited lower survival rates, whereas non-natives showed no significant changes compared to control groups. In summary, warmer temperatures were beneficial for the nurses maintaining the importance of facilitative interactions for native species, but not for the non-natives.</p>

Data from: environmental DNA reveals temporal variation in mesophotic reefs of the Humboldt upwelling ecosystems of central Chile: towards a baseline for biodiversity monitoring of unexplored marine habitats

<p>Temperate mesophotic reef ecosystems (TMREs) are among the least known marine habitats. Information on their diversity and ecology is geographically and temporally scarce, especially in highly productive large upwelling ecosystems. Lack of information remains an obstacle to understanding the importance of TMREs as habitats, biodiversity reservoirs and their connections with better-studied shallow reefs. Here, we use environmental DNA (eDNA) from water samples to characterize the community composition of TMREs on the central Chilean coast generating the first baseline for monitoring the biodiversity of these habitats. We analyzed samples from two depths (30 and 60m) over four seasons (spring, summer, autumn, and winter) and at two locations approximately 16 km apart. We used a panel of three metabarcodes, two that target all eukaryotes (18S rRNA and mitochondrial COI) and one specifically targeting fishes (16S rRNA). All panels combined encompassed eDNA assigned to 42 phyla, 90 classes, 237 orders, and 402 families. The highest family richness was found for the phyla Arthropoda, Bacillariophyta and Chordata. Overall, family richness was similar between depths but decreased during summer, a pattern consistent at both locations. Our results indicate that the structure (composition) of the mesophotic communities varied predominantly with seasons. We analyzed further the better-resolved fish assemblage and compared eDNA with other visual methods at the same locations and depths. We recovered eDNA from nineteen genera of fish, six of these have also been observed on towed underwater videos, while thirteen were unique to eDNA. We discuss the potential drivers of seasonal differences in community composition and richness. Our results suggest that eDNA can provide valuable insights for monitoring TMRE communities but highlight the necessity of completing reference DNA databases available for this region.</p>

Pollen and charcoal from Tolhuaca National Park, south-central Chile

<p><strong>Aim: </strong>Few paleoenvironmental studies have been performed in <em>Araucaria-Nothofagus</em> forests, which are highly vulnerable to ongoing threats from climate change and anthropogenic activities. The primary goal of this work is to reconstruct past environmental changes related to fire disturbances over the last 1800 years in Tolhuaca National Park, Chile.</p> <p><strong>Location: </strong>Tolhuaca National Park, Araucanian region (38.2°S; 71.8°W), Northwestern Patagonia, Chile.</p> <p><strong>Taxa: </strong><em>Araucaria araucana </em>(Araucariaceae)<em>, Nothofagus </em>spp. (Nothofagaceae).</p> <p><strong>Methods:</strong> We completed charcoal and pollen analyses to create two new paleoecological records that span 1800 years. We compared the lake-based reconstruction with the available local tree-ring fire scar chronologies from the last 430 years. Using these data, we compute forest index changes, biomass burning trends, and compare with estimates of archaeological radiocarbon density. We place our inferences with context of published regional paleoclimatic proxies from the Patagonian-Andean region.</p> <p><strong>Results: </strong>Our results showed that fire activity was higher than present between 200 and 1500 CE, with peaks around 200-400 CE and 1100-1500 CE. Periods with high fire activity are associated with reduced forest cover, as <em>Araucaria </em>declined when mixed-severity fire regime occurred for extended periods. Pollen assemblages suggested a shift from dry to wet climate conditions at 1500 CE, and from 1750 CE onward, the arrival of exotic species reflected the land-use changes related to forest clearance and transhumance practices.</p> <p><strong>Main conclusions</strong>: The paleoenvironmental reconstructions showed changes in vegetation, fire, and climate over the past 1800 years in TNP. Wildfires have been the main disturbance process modifying the vegetation structure in the <em>Araucaria</em> and <em>Nothofagus</em> forests. Since 1750 CE intensive post-Hispanic land-use changes (forest clearances by fire and logging) took place in the study area, reducing the native vegetation cover. Climate variability, modulated by SAM-like and ENSO-like conditions, influenced the fire activity (availability and flammability of fuels), concomitantly with high archaeological density. The recent (after 2000 CE) increase of catastrophic wildfires may negatively affect the conservation strategies of <em>Araucaria-Nothofagus</em> forests.</p>

Effects of harvesting on subtidal kelp forests (Lessonia trabeculata) in Central Chile

<p class="MsoBodyText2"><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>The systematic degradation of marine ecosystems is a global phenomenon that has important and diverse consequences including biodiversity loss and reduced ecosystem service provisions. In temperate regions, subtidal kelp forests are dominant ecosystems in rocky coasts, subjected to the influence of local-scale stressors and regional environmental variation. For example, kelps within the Humboldt Current System are at risk of degradation from live-harvesting by fisheries. However, limited information exists regarding the long-term consequences of kelp harvesting which, in turn, limits the ability to provide effective management and conservation efforts. Here, we examined the ecosystem-level consequences of the artisanal subtidal <i>Lessonia trabeculata </i>fishery along the coast of central Chile during a two-year period, assessing a) the change in adult and juvenile <i>L. trabeculata</i> density within harvested and non-harvested (control) plots (~90m<sup>2</sup>), b) the impact of <i>L. trabeculata</i> harvesting on reef fish and macroinvertebrate assemblages, and c) the change in density of the most abundant <i>L. trabeculata</i>-associated species. The experiment was conducted over a two-year period, from December 2016 to May 2019. Approximately 90% of <i>L. trabeculata</i> was removed by an experienced kelp fisherman in experimental plots. After two years, <i>L. trabeculata </i>and its associated community showed a lack of recovery in the harvested plots. Within these plots, the average abundance of the rock shrimp, <i>Rhynchocinetes typus, </i>and the herbivorous snail, <i>Tegula tridentata, </i>was greater than in non-harvested plots and the pattern persisted over the study period. The difference in abundance of associated species may be key to the (lack of) recovery of <i>L. trabeculata </i>forests. Our study highlights the impact of <i>L. trabeculata</i> harvesting on associated fauna, however, significant knowledge gaps remain regarding the capacity and time frame to re-establish the original biomass of <i>L. trabeculata</i>, as well as its associated fauna. The management of <i>L. trabeculata</i> fisheries needs to account for ecosystem-wide impacts in order to better manage and protect vital coastal ecosystems.</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p>
