Density-dependent within-patch movement behavior of two competing species
<p class="MsoNormal">Movement behavior is central to understanding species distributions, population dynamics and coexistence with other species. At present, relatively little is known about how conspecific and interspecific competitor density affect movement behavior. We conducted releases of two species of competing <em>Tribolium</em> flour beetles at different densities, alone and together in homogeneous microcosms, and tested whether their recaptures-with-distance were well described by a random-diffusion model. We also determined whether mean displacement distances varied with the release density of conspecific and heterospecific beetles. A diffusion model provided a good fit to the redistribution of <em>T. castaneum</em> and <em>T. confusum </em>at all release densities, explaining an average of >60% of the variation in recaptures. For both species, mean displacement (directly proportional to the diffusion rate) exhibited a humped-shaped relationship with conspecific density. Finally, we found that both species of beetle impacted the within-patch movement rates of the other species, but it depended on density. For <em>T. castaneum</em> in the highest density treatment, the addition of equal numbers of <em>T. castaneum</em> or <em>T. confusum</em> had the same effect, with mean displacements reduced by approximately one-half. The same result occurred for <em>T. confusum</em> released at an intermediate density. In both cases, it was total beetle abundance, not species identity that mattered to mean displacement. We suggest that displacement or diffusion rates that exhibit a nonlinear relationship with density or depend on the presence or abundance of interacting species should be considered when attempting to predict the spatial spread of populations.</p>

Velocity and temperature dependence of steady-state friction of natural gouge controlled by competing healing mechanisms
<p>The empirical rate- and state-dependent friction law is widely used to explain the frictional resistance of rocks. However, the constitutive parameters vary with temperature and sliding velocity, preventing extrapolation of laboratory results to natural conditions. Here, we explain the frictional properties of natural gouge from the San Andreas Fault, Alpine Fault, and the Nankai Trough from room temperature to $\sim300^\circ$C for a wide range of slip-rates with constant constitutive parameters by invoking the competition between two healing mechanisms with different thermodynamic properties. A transition from velocity-strengthening to velocity-weakening at steady-state can be attained either by decreasing the slip-rate or by increasing temperature. Our study provides a framework to understand the physics underlying the slip-rate and state dependence of friction and the dependence of frictional properties on ambient physical conditions. </p>

Influence of a university cooperation on the development of interprofessional competences
<p class="MsoNormal"><strong><span>Objectives</span></strong></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span>This project carried out in cooperation between the University of Applied Sciences for Health Professions Upper Austria (UASHPUA) and the Medical Faculty of Johannes Kepler University Linz (MFJKUL), describes the feasibility, i.e., the planning and implementation, and presents selected results of an inter-university lecture on interprofessional cooperation. </span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><strong><span>Methodology</span></strong></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span>The lecture "Grundlagen zu interprofessioneller Zusammenarbeit im Gesundheitswesen (IPZ3I)" / "<a>Introduction to interprofessional cooperation in health care </a></span><span>(IPZ3I)") as well as an interprofessional job shadowing were designed. The pilot lecture started in the winter semester (WS) 2019/20. An evaluation of IPZ3I was undertaken by means of a questionnaire. </span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><strong><span>Results</span></strong></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span>IPZ3I was held in WS 2019/20 for 296 students from nine different health care professions and included a specialist lecture, the presentation of the professions, and interprofessional case processing. In the evaluation approx. 80 % of the students described a better understanding of the interprofessional collaboration. More than 70 % regard interprofessional courses in education as important or very important. The majority of respondents indicate that after completing the lecture they can make recommendations for action for interprofessional cooperation. </span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><strong><span>Conclusions</span></strong></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span>The joint lecture IPZ3I will be maintained at both universities. The process of evaluation and adaptation of curricula at UASHPUA is currently underway. This includes, for instance, consultations with the curriculum officers at MFJKUL, and the exploration of further possibilities to identify and to implement joint interprofessional teaching aspects in the curricula. This shall be achieved by considering the existing resources, increasing student numbers at MFJKUL as of 2023, planned curricula revisions as well as using possible synergies aiming at an extension of the existing cooperation. </span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><strong><span>Key words</span></strong></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span>Interprofessionalism; project description; curriculum development; competency-based education </span></p>
Beyond single host, single parasite interactions: quantifying competence for complete multi-host, multi-parasite communities
<p>Understanding parasite transmission in communities requires knowledge of each species' capacity to support transmission. This property, "competence", is a critical currency for modeling transmission under community change and for testing diversity-disease theory. Despite the central role of competence in disease ecology, we lack a clear understanding of the factors that generate competence and drive its variation.</p> <p>We developed novel conceptual and quantitative approaches to systematically quantify competence for a multi-host, multi-parasite community. We applied our framework to an extensive dataset: five amphibian host species exposed to four parasitic trematode species across five ecologically realistic exposure doses. Together, this experimental design captured twenty host-parasite interactions while integrating important information on variation in parasite exposure. Using experimental infection assays, we measured multiple components of the infection process and combined them to produce competence estimates for each interaction.</p> <p>With directly estimated competence values, we asked which components of the infection process best explained variation in competence: barrier resistance (the initial fraction of administered parasites blocked from infecting a host), internal clearance (the fraction of established parasites lost over time) or pre-transmission mortality (the probability of host death prior to transmission). We found that variation in competence among the twenty interactions was best explained by differences in barrier resistance and pre-transmission mortality, underscoring the importance of host resistance and parasite pathogenicity in shaping competence.</p> <p>We also produced dose-integrated estimates of competence that incorporated natural variation in exposure to address questions on the basis and extent of variation in competence. We found strong signals that host species identity shaped competence variation (as opposed to parasite species identity). While variation in infection outcomes across hosts, parasites, individuals, and doses was considerable, individual heterogeneity was limited compared to among-species differences. This finding highlights the robustness of our competence estimates and suggests that species-level values may be strong predictors for community-level transmission in natural systems.</p> <p>Competence emerges from distinct underlying processes and can have strong species-level characteristics; thus, this property has great potential for linking mechanisms of infection to epidemiological patterns.</p>

Competencies of a teacher in Islam; Metasynthesis method (Al-Mofid)
<p>Islamic thinkers and philosophers, emphasize the pivotal role of teachers as the most important factor in realization of success or failure of an Islamic education system. Therefore, any attempt to explore the dynamic and complex nature of teachers’ qualifications would be considered critical. This paper is an attempt to introduce a descriptive model for “Quality criteria” of Muslim teachers reflected in the rich hadith and Islamic educational archaic manuscripts. To this end, adopting a qualitative meta-synthesis approach, all possible dimensions of teachers’ quality criteria were explored. For the application of metasynthesis, grounded coding and thematic analysis were carried out by the two researchers. The output of meta-synthesis resulted in emergence of overall 2313 grounded codes derived from 30 hadith and Fiqh resource books (including verses, narrations and scholar opinions and verdicts). Based on the results, an integrated model of teacher's qualities (named as Al-Mofid Model) in the four major areas of Teacher's etiquette in: knowledge (Al-elm); Instruction (Ta’lim); Pupil (Mota’lem); and Self (Nafs) is presented. The findings indicate that the proposed model, which is the first in kind, provides a comprehensive synthesis of Muslim teachers’ qualities at the extent of Islamic education system, and provides considerable implications for enhancement of teachers’ professional development based on the insights derived from Islamic traditions and values.</p>

Exploring the Competencies, Phases and Dimensions of Municipal Administrative Management towards Sustainability: a systematic review
<p><span>Municipal administrative management plays a crucial role in the progress of local communities, with its effectiveness and efficiency being determining factors for the economic growth and sustainable development of a region. Therefore, it is essential to understand how local governments approach administrative management with a view to promoting sustainable practices. This research focuses on analyzing municipal administrative management from a global and multidimensional perspective, examining both its competencies and its phases and dimensions. The methodology employed is a systematic literature review using PRISMA. Among the findings, the thematic diversity in municipal management stands out, with a particular focus on performance evaluation and quality. The main competencies of local governments include the promotion of social welfare and sustainable development. The key dimensions of administrative management focused on sustainability encompass social, organizational, environmental, economic, and political aspects, highlighting the complexity of municipal management. Strategic planning is identified as essential, along with a balanced focus on all phases of implementation, control, and improvement. This research provides an understanding of how local governments can play a fundamental role in improving the quality of life of their communities through effective and sustainable management.</span></p>
OntoSoft-VFF Evalution: Competency Questions
<p>To validate the ontology and services of OntoSoft-VFF, we demonstrate the ability of our framework to answer a series of competency questions on software functions and evolution, and the use of software functions in workflow components. The competency questions have been drawn from the requirements outlined in the paper "Semantic Software Metadata for Workflow Exploration and Evolution" to appear in the proceedings of 14th IEEE International Conference on eScience.</p>
