Emotional Crying Behavior Dataset (ECBD)

The Emotional Crying Behavior Dataset (ECBD) is an openly available dynamic stimuli dataset depicting 10 different actors exhibiting a range of different crying behaviors. Each actor depicts a full-factorial combination of 3 (tears: no tears vs. subtle tears vs. intense tears) x 2 (facial expression: natural vs. exaggerated) x 2 (touching: no face touching vs. face touching) x 2 (vocalizations: quiet vs. loud) x 2 (stopping: sudden vs. gradual) and 2 additional control videos, resulting in 50 videos per actor. The total dataset consists of 500 short videos.

To access the dataset, request permission to access the files and contact Janis Zickfeld (jhzickfeld@gmail.com) stating your (1) affiliation and the (2) intended use of the dataset. You need to agree with the terms below to use the dataset.

The ECBD and ECBD-S are free resources for non-commercial scientific research purposes. The dataset's videos (ECBD) and photographs (ECBD-S) and their accompanying information may be used under the following terms:

(1) The dataset materials may be used for non-commercial scientific research purposes only.

(2) The dataset materials shall not be published (in print, electronically, or in any other form) without consent from the copyright holder, the University of Lodz, represented by Monika Wróbel.

(3) The dataset materials shall not be re-distributed to third parties, including, but not limited to, file hosting services or cloud-based AI image manipulation services.

(4) No attempts may be made to identify or contact the individuals depicted in the dataset (including, but not limited to, the use of ECBD videos or photographs in facial recognition software).

(5) Use of the dataset materials must be acknowledged in all published work. Please, cite the following manuscript when using the dataset: Wróbel, M., Zickfeld, J., & Ciesielski, P. (2025).
