A Dataset of Fact-Checked Images Shared on WhatsApp during the Brazilian and Indian Elections

(Dataset paper). In Proceedings of the Int'l AAAI Conference on Weblogs and Social Media (ICWSM’20). Atlanta, Georgia, U.S. June 2020.

Abstract: Recently, messaging applications, such as WhatsApp, have been reportedly abused by misinformation campaigns, especially in Brazil and India. A notable form of abuse in WhatsApp relies on several manipulated images and memes containing all kinds of fake stories. In this work, we performed an extensive data collection from a large set of WhatsApp publicly accessible groups and fact-checking agency websites. This paper opens a novel dataset to the research community containing fact-checked fake images shared through WhatsApp for two distinct scenarios known for the spread of fake news on the platform: the 2018 Brazilian elections and the 2019 Indian elections.

RWI-GEO-VOTE: Vote Share of the German Federal Election 2017 on grid level

The dataset contains the election results of the 2017 Bundestag election on a 1 x 1 km grid level. For this purpose, shapefiles of the electoral districts were distributed across the grids according to availability or grids were assigned to the nearest polling station. If neither a shapefile nor the address of the polling station was available, the votes were distributed to the grids on a population-proportional basis at the municipality level.

Conspecific cues elect distinct behavioural responses in cannibalistic poison frog tadpoles dataset

In cannibalistic species, conspecifics can be both predators and prey. As a result, conspecifics present a unique conflict at the intersection of predation, competition and nutritional resources in these species. To better understand how individuals respond to the complex information of conspecific chemical cues, we studied aggressive and cannibalistic tadpoles of the dyeing poison frog, Dendrobates tinctorius. We used a standardized open field test to compare behavioural responses to a positive cue (food), a negative cue (predator) and two conflicting cues (conspecific density and injured conspecifics). We specifically used chemical cues to understand how individuals respond in the absence of additional information that would disambiguate their status as conspecific predator versus prey. We found that the injured conspecific cue elicited a response distinct from either the food cue or the predator cue: tadpoles explored more relative to baseline and predator cues but spent less time moving compared to the food cue. We suggest that these patterns reflect cue-dependent behavioural strategies that maximize exploration while minimizing detection in the presence of conspecific cannibals. In addition to cue-specific changes in behaviour, we observed consistent differences in individuals' behaviour across environments and found that activity and exploratory behaviour were positively correlated across environments. Taken together, our results demonstrate that conspecific cues are interpreted as distinct from either food cues or predator cues in a cannibalistic species where they can represent both.

A retrospective cohort study on effects of antenatal steroids on respiratory morbidity for term elective Caesarean sections in South Asian women

Respiratory distress (RD) is higher among newborns born by caesarean section (CS) at term. RCOG recommend steroid administration for CS prior to 39 weeks. Evidence for effectiveness of steroids for neonatal RD at term is inconclusive. The racial differences are yet to be studied.

A single center retrospective cohort study was conducted in Colombo, Sri Lanka form December 2016 to February 2019. All mothers delivered by CS between 37+0 and 38+6 weeks were included in the study. Mothers with severe maternal hypertension, severe fetal rhesus sensitization, evidence of intrauterine infection, multiple pregnancies and those who received steroids due to other indications at a prior gestation and were excluded. Cohort was subdivided according to administration of IM dexamethasone prior to CS. Primary outcomes measured were RD, admissions to neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and special care baby unit (SCBU). Neonatal infections and maternal duration of hospital stay was recorded as secondary outcome measures.

560 patients were included in the study. 23.2% of patients received antenatal corticosteroids. Incidence of RD, NICU admissions and SCBU admissions in the study cohort was 10%, 0.9%, 2.7% respectively. RR for developing RD in the steroid group compared to non-steroid group was 2.67 (1.64-4.35). NICU and SCBU admissions was needed by 4.6% in steroid group and 3.3% in non-steroid group without a significant difference (p=0.464). A significantly higher number of babies in the steroid group needed IV antibiotics. Average days the mothers were admitted in the hospital was 2.45 days (SD 1.424) for steroid group and 1.4 days (SD 0.856) for the non-steroid group (p < 0.001).

There is a significant increase in the respiratory morbidity in the dexamethasone administered south Asian mothers at term prior to CS. However, this effect has no clinical significance since the admission to NICU and SCBU were not significantly different.
