Toward Determining NFA Equivalence via QBFs
<p>Equivalence of deterministic finite automata (DFAs) has been researched for several decades, but equivalence of nondeterministic finite automata (NFAs) is not as studied. Equivalence of two NFAs is a PSPACE-complete problem. NFA quivalence is a challenging theoretical problem with practical applications such as lexical analysis. Quantified boolean formulas (QBFs) naturally encode PSPACE-complete problems, and we share our preliminary work towards determining NFA equivalence via QBFs.</p>
Mapping the Redshift Evolution of Hα Equivalent Width Distributions & RST Grism Surveys
<p>The Hα Equivalent Width (EW) is an observational proxy for the specific star formation rate (sSFR) and can give us valuable insight in regards to bursty star formation histories. Studies find Hα EW anti-correlates with stellar mass and increases in redshift similar to the `main sequence’ and sSFR redshift evolution. However, selection effects may bias the underlying results, such that measurements of the intrinsic correlations are needed. In this talk, I will be presenting a new methodology of constraining EW distributions by simulating emission line galaxies assuming an intrinsic EW distribution and applying selection criteria to match observations drawn from Hα narrowband surveys between z ~ 0.4 and 2. This nicely overlaps with the expected redshift coverage of RST planned surveys. We find EW intrinsically correlates with Hα luminosity and stellar mass, while ignoring selection effect corrections causes a steeper correlation. We also observe an increasing redshift evolution between EW and stellar mass. The correlation between EW and stellar mass is found to reproduce the EW distribution, LF, and SMF at all redshifts probed, which suggests it is shaped by physical processes associated with star formation. I will finish by discussing the implication of our results for RST survey planning by taking into account the effective EW threshold in slitless grism surveys set by the limiting resolving power using the redshift evolution of the EW — stellar mass correlation.</p>
Data from: Assessing risks of invasion through gamete performance: farm Atlantic salmon sperm and eggs show equivalence in function, fertility, compatibility and competitiveness to wild Atlantic salmon
Adaptations at the gamete level (a) evolve quickly, (b) appear sensitive to inbreeding and outbreeding and (c) have important influences on potential to reproduce. We apply this understanding to problems posed by escaped farm salmon and measure their potential to reproduce in the wild. Farm Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) are a threat to biodiversity, because they escape in large numbers and can introgress, dilute or disrupt locally adapted wild gene pools. Experiments at the whole fish level have found farm reproductive potential to be significant, but inferior compared to wild adults, especially for males. Here, we assess reproductive performance at the gamete level through detailed in vitro comparisons of the form, function, fertility, compatibility and competitiveness of farm versus wild Atlantic salmon sperm and eggs, in conditions mimicking the natural gametic microenvironment, using fish raised under similar environmental conditions. Despite selective domestication and reduced genetic diversity, we find functional equivalence in all farm fish gamete traits compared with their wild ancestral strain. Our results identify a clear threat of farm salmon reproduction with wild fish and therefore encourage further consideration of using triploid farm strains with optimized traits for aquaculture and fish welfare, as triploid fish remain reproductively sterile following escape.
Data from: Asymmetric competitive effects during species range expansion: an experimental assessment of interaction strength between 'equivalent' grazer species at their range overlap
1. Biotic interactions are central to the development of theory and concepts in community ecology; experimental evidence has shown their strong effects on patterns of population and community organization and dynamics over local spatial scales. The role of competition in determining range limits and preventing invasions at biogeographic scales is more controversial, partly because of the complexity of processes involved in species colonization of novel habitats and the difficulties in performing appropriate manipulations and controls. 2. We examined experimentally whether competition is likely to affect poleward range expansion hindering or facilitating the establishment of the limpet Scurria viridula along the southeastern Pacific rocky shore (30°S, Chile) in the region occupied by the congeneric S. zebrina. We also assessed whether competition with the "invader" or range expanding species could reduce individual performance of the 'native' S. zebrina and depress local populations 3. Geographic field surveys were conducted to characterize the abundance and identity of limpets along the south-eastern Pacific coast from 18°S to 41°S, and the micro-scale (few cm) spatial distribution across the range overlap of the two species. Field-based competition experiments were conducted at the southern leading edge of the range of S. viridula (33°S) and at the northern limit of S. zebrina (30°S). 4. Field surveys showed poleward range expansion of S. viridula of ca. 210 km since year 2000, with an expansion rate of 13.1 km year -1. No range shift was detected for S. zebrina. The resident S. zebrina had significant negative effects on the growth rate of the invading juvenile S. viridula, while no effect of the latter was found on S. zebrina. Spatial segregation between species was found at the scale of cms. 5. Our results provide novel evidence of an asymmetric competitive effect of a resident species on an invader, which may hamper further range expansion. No negative effect of the invader on the resident species was detected. This study highlights the complexities of evaluating the role of species interactions in setting range limits of species, but showed how interspecific competition might slow the advance of an invader by reducing individual performance and overall population size at the advancing front.
