Ultrafine particle number concentration observations perpendicular to a main street in Berlin, Germany, in summer 2017

The data set was recorded in summer 2017 in Berlin, Germany. It was the basis of the paper:

Fritz, S., Schubert, S., and Schneider, C. (2021). Measurements of spatial variability of sub-micron particle number concentrations perpendicular to a main road in a built-up area. metz. 30, 315–331. doi:10.1127/metz/2021/1058

The measurement setup, study site, and devices used are described more detailed in the paper.

The data sets uploaded include observations of particle number concentrations, wind direction and wind speed at ground level as well as traffic count data. The time stamp is in local time for Berlin/Germany.

The data sets:

coordinates.csv contains the coordinates of the measurement points used in file obs_pnc_wind. The column ‘distance’ links these two files. The values in the column ‘distance’ are the distance from the curb of the main road. The distance ‘-10’ represents the measurement point on the central strip of the main road. The two columns ‘latitude’ and ‘longitude’ provide the coordinates of the measurement points.

obs_pnc_wind contains the observation data for particle number concentration (PNC), wind speed, and wind direction. PNC was recorded in #/cm³ with a TSI 3007 CPC at a 1-second resolution. Wind speed `ws’ [m/s] was recorded with a KESTREL 5000 with a 2-second resolution. Wind direction ‘wdir’ [°] was manually recorded as the most prominent wind direction within the 3-minute measurements per measurement point in angles of 10°. Wind direction was changed to NA (wdir_comment > 0), if it could not be determined either due to too calm wind (wdir_comment = 1) or with continuously changing wind direction (wdir_comment = 2). Along the measurement route, sometimes additional sources occurred and were recorded in the variable ‘source_type’ at the time they passed by the measurement device. Variable ‘source_comment’ provides additional information about ‘source_type’ where necessary.

traffic_count contains the vehicles counted on the main street (Straße des 17. Juni) for each of the 72 runs. It was calculated as [vehicles/hour] based on 5-minute traffic counts. During the traffic counts, we differentiated between smaller (light duty) vehicles (<3.5 t, cars, vans, motorcycles, scooters) and bigger (heavy duty) vehicles (> 3.5 t, trucks and busses).

Entomological identification of the cadaver fauna of wolf and lynx carcasses in Germany between 2014-2021

The frequency of illegal killings of animals that are under special protection in Germany is continuously increasing. Especially the carnivores wolf and lynx are strongly threatened by humans. To counteract these developments, it is necessary to investigate and prosecute such offenses. An important clue for police investigations is the time of death of the deceased animal. Forensic entomology makes use of the knowledge of temperature-dependent development rates as well as succession patterns of necrophagous flies and beetles and to determine an approximate time of death. While the carcass fauna of other species as well as humans is well studied, the composition of insects on wolves and lynx worldwide has not yet been deciphered. The aim of this work is to investigate the carcass fauna of wolf and lynx. For this purpose, the species composition of insects from 70 wolf carcasses and 8 lynx carcasses was analysed with respect to different habitat types, decomposition stages, and seasons. This data set provides extensive knowledge of the arthropod fauna on wolf and lynx carcasses. Typology of agricultural land systems of Germany at a resolution of 100 hectares.

The decline of farmland biodiversity has widely been recognized in society and politics. Many factors that negatively affect biodiversity are associated with agriculture. European policy instruments and measures, which aimed at mitigating these impacts, have not been successful in counteracting the negative trends of farmland biodiversity. There is a growing recognition that conservation policy instruments need to be spatially targeted, given the heterogeneity of agricultural landscapes and extent of agricultural intensification in Europe. For Germany, we developed a typology of agricultural land systems (ALS) that captures the regional characteristics of agricultural intensification. For this purpose, we applied a cluster-analysis integrating indicators for land cover, landscape structure, land-use intensity, climate and relief at a resolution of with a spatial resolution of 1 km². As a result, we present a typology of eight ALS ranging from large-scale, intensive arable farming to extensive grassland/forest mosaics in mountains. The data included in this package contain the typology ALS and the corresponding values for the indicators for each hexagonal grid cell of 1 km²cell size. The typology of ALS could be used as a spatial framework for regional targeting of conservation policy instruments and for monitoring regional-specific trends of biodiversity indicators and their drivers. The data are supplement to the publication: Pingel, M; Sietz, D; Röder, N; Klimek, S and Golla, B. (2025) Typology of Agricultural Land Systems to Support Tailored Agri-Environmental Schemes for Farmland Biodiversity: A Case Study from Germany. [Preprint]. http://dx.doi.org/10.2139/ssrn.5162566.

Projected climate and canopy change lead to thermophilization and homogenization of forest floor vegetation in a hotspot of plant species richness, Berchtesgaden National Park, Bavaria, Germany

Mountain forests are plant diversity hotspots, but changing climate and increasing forest disturbances will likely lead to far-reaching plant community change. Projecting future change, however, is challenging for forest understory plants, which respond to forest structure and composition as well as climate. Here, we jointly assessed effects of both climate and forest change, including wind and bark beetle disturbances, using the process-based simulation model iLand in a protected landscape in the northern Alps (Berchtesgaden National Park, Germany), asking: (1) How do understory plant communities respond to 21st-century change in a topographically complex mountain landscape, representing a hotspot of plant species richness? (2) How important are climatic changes (i.e., direct climate effects) versus forest structure and composition changes (i.e., indirect climate effects and recovery from past land use) in driving understory responses at landscape scales? Stacked individual species distribution models fit with climate, forest, and soil predictors (248 species currently present in the landscape, derived from 150 field plots stratified by elevation and forest development, overall AUC = 0.86) were driven with projected climate (RCP4.5 and RCP8.5) and modeled forest variables to predict plant community change. Nearly all species persisted in the landscape in 2050, but on average 8% of the species pool was lost by the end of the century. By 2100, landscape mean species richness and understory cover declined (-13% and -8%, respectively), warm-adapted species increasingly dominated plant communities (i.e., thermophilization, +12%), and plot-level turnover was high (62%). Subalpine forests experienced the greatest richness declines (-16%), most thermophilization (+17%), and highest turnover (67%), resulting in plant community homogenization across elevation zones. Climate rather than forest change was the dominant driver of understory responses. The magnitude of unabated 2
