Data from: Children in the Syrian civil war: the familial, educational, and public health impact of ongoing violence

The Syrian civil war since 2011 has led to one of the most complex humanitarian emergencies in history. The objective of this study was to document the impact of the conflict on the familial, educational, and public health state of Syrian children. A cross-sectional observational study was conducted in May 2015. Health care workers visited families with a prospectively designed data sheet in 4 Northern Syrian governorates. The 1001 children included in this study originated from Aleppo (41%), Idleb (36%), Hamah (15%), and Lattakia (8%). The children's median age was 6 years (range, 0-15 years; interquartile range, 3-11 years), and 61% were boys. Almost 20% of the children were internally displaced, and 5% had deceased or missing parents. Children lacked access to safe drinking water (15%), appropriate sanitation (23%), healthy nutrition (16%), and pediatric health care providers (64%). Vaccination was inadequate in 72%. More than half of school-aged children had no access to education. Children in Idleb and Lattakia were at greater risk of having unmet public health needs. Younger children were at greater risk of having an incomplete vaccination state. After 4 years of civil war in Syria, children have lost parents, live in substandard life quality circumstances, and are at risk for outbreaks because of worsening vaccination states and insufficient availability of health care providers.

THE IMPACT OF NUTRITION ON STUDENT PERFORMANCE AND HEALTH: WHY THE MEDITERRANEAN DIET?

<p>Malnutrition is associated with poor psycho-physical health, behavioral problems, and unsatisfactory learning outcomes. Numerous studies show that adhering to a healthy diet such as the Mediterranean Diet (MD) can have beneficial effects on students, increasing their academic performance, quality of life, and their health status. 200 students aged 10-15 years it turns out that a large proportion of students surveyed; despite the information they have about healthy foods, do not eat properly and have admitted that they have low concentration and lack of attention during the learning process. Based on this identified situation, it is necessary to orient students towards a correct lifestyle and mainly towards the Mediterranean diet as a healthy dietary model.</p>

Community-based integrated animal health management to reduce the impact of cerebral Coenurosis in Bonga sheep in Kaffa zone, southwestern Ethiopia

<p>Coenurosis, a fatal parasitic disease, is widespread in the highlands of Ethiopia, where 75% of the country's sheep population is found. There is a significant prevalence of the disease in the current study area. Therefore, the current study was conducted to reduce the impact of cerebral coenurosis on sheep production in the study area by integrating different prevention and control options and raising community awareness of the disease. Questionnaire surveys, coproscopic examination of dog feces, and household-level surveillance were used to collect data on reported coenurosis cases and taeniid infections. Awareness creation training and regular dog deworming were used as an intervention to reduce the prevalence of the disease. A total of 107, 134, 153, and 124 dogs were dewormed during the first, second, third, and fourth rounds during the study period, respectively. Eggs were detected in 58.53% (95% CI 47.4- 68.86) of pre-deworming fecal samples of dogs. Eggs were detected in 24.18% (95% CI: 40.0–49.7) of the fecal samples after the intervention, 34.35% less than before the intervention. At the beginning of the intervention, the level of awareness of farmers in the intervention sites about the cause of the disease was 12.2%, which increased to 51.03% at the end of the intervention. The community-based integrated animal health management approach for coenurosis control has the potential to be expanded throughout the country, thus reducing economic losses in communities where the disease is endemic.</p>

Dataset - Global site-specific health impacts of fossil energy, steel mills, oil refineries and cement plants

<div> <div> <p>Climate change and particulate matter air pollution present major threats to human well-being by causing impacts on human health. Both are connected to key air pollutants such as carbon dioxide (CO<span><span><span>2</span></span></span>), primary fine particulate matter (PM<span><span><span>2.5</span></span></span>), sulfur dioxide (SO<span><span><span>2</span></span></span>), nitrogen oxides (NO<span><span><span>x</span></span></span>) and ammonia (NH<span><span><span>3</span></span></span>), which are primarily emitted from energy-intensive industrial sectors. We present the first study to consistently link a broad range of emission measurements for these substances with site-specific technical data, emission models, and atmospheric fate and effect models to quantify health impacts caused by nearly all global fossil power plants, steel mills, oil refineries and cement plants. The resulting health impact patterns differ substantially from far less detailed earlier studies due to the high resolution of included data, highlighting in particular the key role of emission abatement at individual coal-consuming industrial sites in densely populated areas of Asia (Northern and North-Eastern India, Java in Indonesia, Eastern China), Western Europe (Germany, Belgium, Netherlands) as well as in the US. Of greatest health concern are the high SO<span><span><span>2</span></span></span> emissions in India, which stand out due to missing flue gas treatment and cause a particularly high share of local health impacts despite a limited number of emission sites. At the same time, the massive infrastructure and export capacity build-up in China in recent years is taking a substantial toll on regional and global health and requires more stringent regulation than in the rest of the world due to unfavorable environmental conditions and high population densities. The current phase-out of highly emitting industries in Europe is found not to have started with sites having the greatest health impacts. Our detailed site-specific emission and impact inventory is able to highlight more effective alternatives and to track future progress.</p> </div> </div>
