For animals that harbor photosynthetic symbionts within their tissues, such as corals, the different relative contributions of autotrophy versus heterotrophy to organismal energetic requirements have direct impacts on fitness. This is especially true for facultatively symbiotic corals, where the balance between host-caught and symbiont-produced energy can be altered substantially to meet the variable demands of a shifting environment. In this study, we utilized a temperate coral-algal system (the northern star coral, Astrangia poculata, and its photosynthetic endosymiont, Symbiodinium psygmophilum) to explore the impacts of nutritional sourcing on the host's health and ability to regenerate experimentally excised polyps. For fed and starved colonies, wound healing and total colony tissue cover were differentially impacted by heterotrophy versus autotrophy. There was an additive impact of positive nutritional and symbiotic states on a coral's ability to initiate healing, but a greater influence of symbiont state on the recovery of lost tissue at the lesion site and complete polyp regeneration. On the other hand, regardless of symbiont state, fed corals maintained a higher overall colony tissue cover, which also enabled more active host behavior (polyp extension) and endosymbiont behavior (photosynthetic ability of Symbiondinium). Overall, we determined that the impact of nutritional state and symbiotic state varied between biological functions, suggesting a diversity in energetic sourcing for each of these processes.

Heterotrophic bacterial abundance and biomass were calculated from discrete bottle samples from CCE process cruises in the California Current System, 2007 - 2017 (ongoing).
Seawater samples, fixed with glutaraldehyde, were taken from 6 depths from each mid-day CTD cast to calculate heterotrophic bacterial abundance and biomass.

Global Gridded 1-km Soil and Soil Heterotrophic Respiration Derived from SRDB v5
This dataset provides global gridded estimates of annual soil respiration (Rs) and soil heterotrophic respiration (Rh) and associated uncertainties at 1 km resolution. Mean soil respiration was estimated using a quantile regression forest model utilizing data from the global Soil Respiration Database Version 5 (SRDB-V5) and covariates of mean annual temperature, seasonal precipitation, and vegetative cover. The SRDB holds results of field studies of soil respiration from around the globe. A total of 4,115 records from 1,036 studies were selected from SRDB-V5. SRDB-V5 features more soil respiration data published in Russian and Chinese scientific literature for better global spatio-temporal coverage and improved global climate-space representation. These soil respiration records were combined with global meteorological, land cover, and topographic data and then evaluated with variable selection using random forests. The standard deviation and coefficient of variation of Rs are included and were also derived from the same model. Global heterotrophic respiration was calculated from Rs estimates. The data are produced in part from SRDB-V5 inputs that cover the period 1961-2016.
