Using longitudinal surveys for monitoring the integration of immigrants and their children
<p>In May-June 2021, <a href="http://cost.eu/actions/CA16111/">ETHMIGSURVEYDATA</a>—a COST Action and research network dedicated to quantitative surveys on ethnic and migrant minorities' (EMMs') integration and inclusion—organized a <em>Policy Dialogue Webinar Series </em>to share ETHMIGSURVEYDATA’s main results, as well as to showcase EMM projects that are ongoing in policy-relevant institutions. These webinars have included presentations by the European Asylum Support Office (EASO), the European Commission Joint Research Centre (JRC), the International Organization for Migration (IOM), and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).</p> <p>This is the video recording for the 3rd webinar of the <em>Policy Dialogue Webinar Series, </em>which was held on 8 June 2021: "Using longitudinal surveys for monitoring the integration of immigrants and their children." Immigration dynamics of tropical and subtropical Southeast Asian limestone karst floras
<p><i>Ex situ </i>origins and dispersal of taxa have played important roles in the assembly of island-like biodiversity hotspots. Insular limestone karsts in Southeast Asia are hotspots of biodiversity and endemism, but the immigration processes of their unique floras are still poorly known. Here, we used Gesneriaceae as a proxy to investigate immigration dynamics of tropical and subtropical Southeast Asian karst floras. We show that immigration into subtropical Southeast Asian karst floras first occurred in the early Miocene, with two peaks in the early to middle Miocene and the Pliocene to early Pleistocene, whereas immigration into tropical Southeast Asian karsts initiated in the late Eocene, with two peaks in the late Oligocene and the late Miocene. The rich geological and ecological diversities of different regions, together with habitat isolation due to climatic changes, might be responsible for the different immigration patterns. We also discover that Southeast Asian karst biodiversity comprises a mix of immigrant pre-adapted lineages and descendants from local acid soil ancestors, although niche shift from acid soil to karst in tropical Southeast Asian islands was lacking. <span>These </span><span>findings</span> <span>provide insights into </span><span>how</span> <span>Southeast </span><span>Asian </span><span>k</span><span>arst</span><span>s</span><span> respond to ongoing climate change and are of particular importance for</span><span> their </span><span>conservation planning</span><span>.</span></p>

Data from: Immigrant and extrinsic hybrid inviability contribute to reproductive isolation between lake and river cichlid ecotypes
Understanding how reproductive barriers evolve and which barriers contribute to speciation requires the examination of organismal lineages that are still in the process of diversification and the study of the full range of reproductive barriers acting at different life stages. Lake and river ecotypes of the East African cichlid fish Astatotilapia burtoni show habitat specific adaptations, despite different levels of genetic differentiation, and thus represent an ideal model to study the evolution of reproductive barriers. To evaluate the degree of reproductive isolation between genetically divergent lake and river populations, we performed a mesocosm mating experiment in a semi-natural setting at Lake Tanganyika. We assessed reproductive isolation in the presence of male–male competition by analysing survival and growth rates of introduced adults and their reproductive success from genetic parentage of surviving offspring. The genetically divergent river population showed reduced fitness in terms of survival, growth rate, and mating success in a lake-like environment. Hybrid offspring between different populations showed intermediate survival consistent with extrinsic postzygotic reproductive barriers. Our results suggest that both prezygotic (immigrant inviability) and postzygotic reproductive barriers contribute to divergence, and highlight the value of assessing multiple reproductive barriers acting at different stages and in natural contexts to understand speciation mechanisms.
Data from: Sympatric diversification vs. immigration: deciphering host-plant specialization in a polyphagous insect, the stolbur phytoplasma vector Hyalesthes obsoletus (Cixiidae)
The epidemiology of vector transmitted plant diseases is highly influenced by dispersal and the host-plant range of the vector. Widening the vector's host range may increase transmission potential, whereas specialization may induce specific disease cycles. The process leading to a vector's host shift and its epidemiological outcome is therefore embedded in the frameworks of sympatric evolution vs. immigration of preadapted populations. In this study, we analyse whether a host shift of the stolbur phytoplasma vector, Hyalesthes obsoletus from field bindweed to stinging nettle in its northern distribution range evolved sympatrically or by immigration. The exploitation of stinging nettle has led to outbreaks of the grapevine disease bois noir caused by a stinging nettle-specific phytoplasma strain. Microsatellite data from populations from northern and ancestral ranges provide strong evidence for sympatric host-race evolution in the northern range: Host-plant associated populations were significantly differentiated among syntopic sites (0.054 < FHT < 0.098) and constant over 5 years. While gene flow was asymmetric from the old into the predicted new host race, which had significantly reduced genetic diversity, the genetic identity between syntopic host-race populations in the northern range was higher than between these populations and syntopic populations in ancestral ranges, where there was no evidence for genetic host races. Although immigration was detected in the northern field bindweed population, it cannot explain host-race diversification but suggests the introduction of a stinging nettle-specific phytoplasma strain by plant-unspecific vectors. The evolution of host races in the northern range has led to specific vector-based bois noir disease cycles.
