Supporting data for assessing impacts of satellite GPS transmitters on survival, nesting propensity, and nest success of greater sage-grouse
<p>Telemetry technology and data are commonly used to study behavior and demography of wildlife. Satellite-based, global positioning system (GPS) telemetry allows researchers to remotely collect a high volume of fine-resolution animal location data but may also come with hidden costs. For example, recent studies suggested GPS transmitters attached via backpacks may reduce survival of greater sage-grouse (<em>Centrocercus urophasianus</em>) relative to very high frequency (VHF) telemetry transmitters attached via collars. While some evidence suggests GPS backpacks can reduce survival, no studies examined their effects on sage-grouse breeding behavior and success. We compared survival, breeding behavior, and nest success for sage-grouse hens marked with either VHF collars or GPS backpack transmitters in central Idaho, USA. GPS backpacks reduced spring-summer survival relative to VHF collars, yet GPS backpacks did not consistently affect nest success or the likelihood or timing of nest initiation relative to VHF collars. Daily nest survival varied annually and with timing of nest initiation and nest age, but marginal effects of transmitter type were statistically insignificant, and interactions between transmitter type and study year were inconsistent. These results demonstrate the effect of GPS backpacks on sage-grouse survival but also suggest GPS backpacks do not appear to affect components of fecundity. </p>

Environmental impact assessment for large carnivores: a methodological review of the wolf (Canis lupus) monitoring in Portugal
<p>The continuous growth of the global human population results in increased use and change of landscapes, with infrastructures like transportation or energy facilities, being a particular risk to large carnivores. Environmental Impact Assessments were established to identify the probable environmental consequences of any new proposed project, find ways to reduce impacts, and provide evidence to inform decision making and mitigation. Portugal has a wolf population of around 300 individuals, designated as an endangered species with full legal protection. They occupy the northern mountainous areas of the country which has also been the focus of new human infrastructures over the last 20 years. Consequently, dozens of wolf monitoring programs have been established to evaluate wolf population status, to identify impacts, and to inform appropriate mitigation or compensation measures. We reviewed Portuguese wolf monitoring programs to answer four key questions: do wolf programs examine adequate biological parameters to meet monitoring objectives? is the study design suitable for measuring impacts? are data collection methods and effort sufficient for the stated inference objectives? and do statistical analyses of the data lead to robust conclusions? Overall, we found a mismatch between the stated aims of wolf monitoring and the results reported, and often neither aligns with the existing national wolf monitoring guidelines. Despite the vast effort expended and the diversity of methods used, data analysis makes almost exclusive use of relative indices or summary statistics, with little consideration of the potential biases that arise through the (imperfect) observational process. This makes comparisons of impacts across space and time difficult and is therefore unlikely to contribute to a general understanding of wolf responses to infrastructure-related disturbance. We recommend the development of standardized monitoring protocols and advocate for the use of statistical methods that account for imperfect detection to guarantee accuracy, reproducibility, and efficacy of the programs.</p>

Socio-economic and environmental impacts of ants: data to support global assessments
<p>Risk assessments are fundamental to invasive species management and are underpinned by comprehensive characterization of invasive species impacts. Our understanding of the impacts of invasive species is growing constantly, and several recently developed frameworks offer the opportunity to systematically categorize environmental and socio-economic impacts of invasive species. Invasive ants are among the most widespread and damaging invaders. We provide a global, comprehensive assessment on the impacts of ants and propose a priority list of risk species. We used the Socio-Economic Impact Classification for Alien Taxa (SEICAT), Environmental Impact Classification for Alien Taxa (EICAT) and Generic Impact Scoring System (GISS) to analyse 642 unique sources for 100 named species. This dataset includes the raw recrods on which our assessments were based, and some summary data. Other data can be found in the publication.</p>

ARISE-SAI-1.5: Assessing Responses and Impacts of Solar climate intervention on the Earth system with Stratospheric Aerosol Injection, with cooling to 1.5C
<p>Assessing Responses and Impacts of Solar climate intervention on the Earth system with Stratospheric Aerosol Injection (ARISE-SAI) is a set of simulations carried out with the Community Earth System Model, version 2 with the Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model, version 6 (CESM2(WACCM6)) that aims at simulating a plausible deployment of solar climate intervention of stratospheric aerosol injection to enable community assessment of responses of the Earth system. This first set of simulations introduce stratospheric aerosol injection at ~ 21 km in simulated year 2035, called ARISE-SAI-1.5, utilize the middle-of-the-road SSP2-4.5 emission scenario,, and keep global mean surface air temperature near 1.5°C above the pre-industrial value. Sulfur dioxide injections in the ARISE-SAI-1.5 simulations are placed at four injection locations (15°S, 15°N, 30°S, 30°N) into one grid box at 180° longitude, and midpoint altitude of 21.6 km. The injection amount at each latitude is specified annually by a “controller” algorithm. This strategy ensures that the global mean surface temperature (T0), north-south temperature gradient (T1), and equator-to-pole temperature gradient (T2) remain close to ~ 1.5°C above the pre-industrial value throughout the simulation.</p> <p> </p> <p>The files contained here contain output of surface temperature (TREFHT), total precipitation (PRECT), SO4, and controller log files with amounts of SO2 injection. </p>
Resolved EXiobase (REX II) with regionalized biodiversity loss impact assessment of global mining – second version of a highly-resolved MRIO database for the year 2014
<p>This repository provides a new version of the highly-resolved global multi-regional input-output database called REX II (Resolved EXiobase) for the year 2014 with improved data quality for all mining and metals processing sectors, including a regionalized biodiversity impact assessment for all mining sectors. This regionalized impact assessment is based on the global mining area data set of Maus et al (2020). Wave climate simulations for Denmark - for paper 'Coinciding storm surge and wave setup: A regional assessment of sea level rise impact'
<p>This wave climate dataset are the results for the paper titled 'Coinciding storm surge and wave setup: A regional assessment of sea level rise impact'.</p> <p>The operational wave forecasting service provided by DMI-WAM uses the WAM Cycle version 4.5.4, a third-generation spectral wave model. DMI-WAM is used for the wave climate simulations. The meteorological forcing used in this study was obtained from the regional climate model DMI-HIRHAM, developed by the Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI). It is a component of the CORDEX (Coordinated Regional Climate Downscaling Experiment) ensemble in Europe. Regarding the selection of the time frame and IPCC scenarios in our study, we adhered to the recommendations provided by municipalities. Municipalities are keenly interested in obtaining near-future wind wave data for the specific purpose of using them for risk management. Therefore, the examination of forthcoming weather extremes in the near future within the context of the high greenhouse gas emission scenario (RCP8.5 scenario) is of significance within this investigation. We conduct simulations that encompass two distinct time periods: the historical period spanning from 1976 to 2005, and the near-future period from 2041 to 2070. We analyse the WAM model results for wave climate under both present climate conditions (1976-2005) and future climate scenarios (2041-2070) under the RCP8.5 scenario. Furthermore, note that while our wave climate simulations provide valuable insights into the dynamics of wind-induced waves, the mean SLR is not explicitly taken into account. Constructing visualization tools and training resources to assess climate impacts on the channel islands national marine sanctuary NetCDF files
<p>The Channel Islands Marine Sanctuary (CINMS) comprises 1,470 square miles surrounding the Northern Channel Islands: Anacapa, Santa Cruz, Santa Rosa, San Miguel, and Santa Barbara, protecting various species and habitats. However, these sensitive habitats are highly susceptible to climate-driven 'shock' events which are associated with extreme values of temperature, pH, or ocean nutrient levels. A particularly devastating example was seen in 2014-16, when extreme temperatures and changes in nutrient conditions off the California coast led to large-scale die-offs of marine organisms. Global climate models are the best tool available to predict how these shocks may respond to climate change. To better understand the drivers and statistics of climate-driven ecosystem shocks, a 'large ensemble' of simulations run with multiple climate models will be used. The objective of this project is to develop a Python-based web application to visualize ecologically significant climate variables near the CINMS. The web application will be used by researchers from the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) to analyze climate model output, and by CINMS staff to develop new indicators of shocks to marine ecosystems.</p>
Assessing the Impact of Supply-Side Policies on Oil Extraction, Health, and Employment in California
<p>California's ambitious goal to slash GHG emissions by 90% by 2045 marks a significant shift towards sustainability. Supply-side policies, such as Senate Bill 1137, which bans new oil and gas wells within 3,200 feet of sensitive areas, signal a commitment to environmental and public health protection. To gauge SB 1137's impact accurately, the existing model must be adapted to incorporate this setback distance. This capstone project aims to bridge this gap by updating the model and creating accessible educational materials for Californians. Objectives include updating the model, predicting well locations and oil extraction using machine learning, and developing a public online app with R Shiny. The MEDS capstone group will investigate the effects of the 3,200-foot setback distance on emissions, employment, and health, contributing to the evidence supporting SB 1137.</p>
