NWFSC fish and invertebrate diversity derived from west coast groundfish trawl program

This dataset presents the community structure of groundfish and invertebrate in the West Coast since 1977. The community structure indices include the richness and Simpson’s evenness. The raw count data is from West Coast Groundfish Bottom Trawl survey conducted by the Northwest Fisheries Science Center. The spatial coverage of this dataset is between Pt Conception, California and north of U.S.-Mexico border.

Data and R scripts for analyses of declines in invertebrate species from the Gulf of Maine, USA, 1997 - 2018

Data files and R scripts are for the analyses that are presented in an article that is under revision for Biology Communications. The title of the article is: Declines over the last two decades of five key invertebrate species found on rocky intertidal shores throughout the western North Atlantic. The three data files contain the abundances of four gastropod species and the recruitment of barnacles and mussels from 1997 to 2018, monthly temperature data from three buoys from 2001 to 2018, and pH and aragonite saturation state from 1997 to 2014. R scripts include details of Bayesian estimates for Poisson regressions of species over time, clean-up of environmental data, imputation of missing environmental data and analyses of species versus environmental parameters.

UCSB SONGS Mitigation Monitoring: Wetland Survey - Invertebrate Abundance

These data describe the abundance of invertebrate species sampled in quadrats and sediment cores as part of the SONGS San Dieguito Wetland Restoration monitoring program to track long-term patterns in species abundance and diversity and assess compliance of the restoration project with conditions in the SONGS Coastal Development permit. This study began in 2012 in the San Dieguito Lagoon and Tijuana Estuary in San Diego County, CA, Carpinteria Salt Marsh in Santa Barbara County, CA, and Mugu Lagoon in Ventura County, CA. The abundance of invertebrates in quadrats and sediment cores was recorded at six main channel and six tidal creek locations at each wetland. Beginning in 2024, Tijuana Estuary was replaced with Los Penasquitos Lagoon in San Diego County, CA.

These data describe annual estimates of the density of benthic algae and macroinvertebrates at three subtidal reefs collected as part of the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS) Mitigation Monitoring Program. Data collection began in 2009 at an artificial reef (Wheeler North Reef in Orange County, CA) and two natural reference reefs (San Mateo Kelp in Orange County, CA and Barn Kelp in San Diego County, CA). In the summer of each year, divers identified and counted species of benthic algae and macroinvertebrates in quadrats of varying size that were uniformly distributed along fixed transects at each reef.

In the summer of each year, divers identified and recorded species of sessile algae and macroinvertebrates, and substrate types under twenty uniformly placed points within five 1 m2 quadrats that were uniformly distributed along semi-permanent transects at each reef.

Invertebrates of the Andrews Experimental Forest: An annotated list of insects and other arthropods, 1971 to 2002

This publication is not a pro forma species list; rather, it has been generated as the result of diverse ecological studies centered on and around the Andrews Forest beginning in 1971. No attempt has been made to exhaustively collect the area with methodologies appropriate to each invertebrate group. This list provides some insight into the enormous invertebrate diversity present in the coniferous forests of the Pacific Northwest. It provides reference material for investigators who might be engaged in ecological investigations. We hope that these data, set in an ecological context, will stimulate collaboration and facilitate the design of future research.

Abundance of major taxonomic groups of invertebrates (arthropods and gastropods) collected with pitfall traps at four sites near Toolik Field Station Arctic LTER, Alaska in the summer of 2010.

Invertebrates (spiders, insects and slugs) were collected weekly using pitfall traps at four sites near the Arctic LTER at Toolik Field Station, Alaska. Traps were placed along transects in shrub (shrub-dominant) and open (tussock-dominant) tundra sites. Pitfall traps were placed for 48-hour intervals once per week from early June until mid-July 2010. Collected invertebrates were counted and identified to class (all invertebrates), order or family (for some of the most common families collected).

Baltimore Ecosystem Study: Invertebrate and Restoration Habitat Data

An often-cited benefit of river restoration is an increase in biodiversity or shift in composition to more desirable taxa. Yet, hard manipulations of habitat structure often fail to elicit a significant response in terms of biodiversity patterns. In contrast to conventional wisdom, the dispersal of organisms may have as large an influence on biodiversity patterns as environmental conditions. This influence of dispersal may be particularly influential in river networks which are linear branching, or dendritic, and thus constrain most dispersal to the river corridor. As such, some locations in river networks, such as isolated headwaters, are expected to respond less to environmental factors and less by dispersal than more well-connected downstream reaches. We applied this metacommunity framework to study how restoration drives biodiversity patterns in river networks. By comparing assemblage structure in headwater versus more well-connected mainstem sites, we learned that headwater restoration efforts supported higher biodiversity, exhibited more stable ecological communities compared with adjacent, un-restored reaches. Such differences were not evident in mainstem reaches. Consistent with theory and mounting empirical evidence, we attribute this finding to a relatively higher influence of dispersal-driven factors on assemblage structure in more well-connected, higher order reaches. An implication of this work is that, if biodiversity is to be a goal of restoration activity, such local manipulations of habitat should elicit a more profound response in small, isolated streams than in larger downstream reaches. These results offer another significant finding supporting the notion that restoration activity cannot proceed in isolation of larger scale, catchment level degradation. This dataset represents the microhabitat sampling.

SBC LTER: Reef: Kelp Forest Community Dynamics: Kelp Forest Data to support "Estimating biomass of benthic kelp forest invertebrates from body size and percent cover"

These data describe quantitative relationships between wet mass and length or wet mass and percent cover, and conversion factors to transform wet mass into dry mass, shell-free and decalcified dry mass, and ash-free dry mass for 84 species of benthic macroinvertebrates common to giant kelp forests in southern California. Data are based on organisms collected from sites in the Santa Barbara Channel between April 2010 and May 2014. These measurements are intended to facilitate the conversion of invertebrate abundance into common metrics of biomass, for quantitative studies of community dynamics, trophic interactions, energy flow and biodiversity. Converting numerical abundance (i.e., organism density) to biomass requires information on the relationship between individual size and biomass. For colonial and small aggregating taxa that are numerous and indistinct, measures of abundance are usually proportional (e.g., percent cover). Hence, converstions are taxa-specific, based on either size or cover, and a variety of metrics of species biomass are included, e.g., wet mass, shell-free wet mass, ash-free dry mass.
