Single-crystal X-ray diffractometry data for a sample of [Cu(HF₂)(pyrazine)₂]PF₆ collected on beamline I19-2 at Diamond Light Source
<p>Single-crystal X-ray diffractometry data for a sample of [Cu(HF₂)(pyrazine)₂]PF₆.</p> <p>These data were collected at Diamond Light Source, on beamline I19 (experiments hutch 2), on 2022-01-30, and are particularly useful for testing data reduction routines. They are known to produce good merging statistics and final structure refinement.</p> <p>The sample was prepared as follows:<br> Ammonium hexafluorophosphate (NH₄PF₆) (0.310 g, 1.9 mmol), ammonium hydrogen difluoride ((NH₄)HF₂) (0.109 g, 1.9 mmol) and pyrazine (C₄H₄N₂) (0.300 g, 3.7 mmol) were dissolved in 5 mL of deionised water. The obtained colourless solution was slowly added to a blue solution of copper(II) nitrate prepared by dissolving copper(II) nitrate hemipentahydrate (Cu(NO₃)₂ · 2.5(H₂O)) (0.425 g, 1.8 mmol) in 5 mL of deionised water. The solutions were mixed in a plastic beaker at room temperature. The formation of blue crystals of [Cu(HF₂)(pyrazine)₂]PF₆ on the side of the beaker started after few seconds and continued for about 24 hours during which the sealed beaker was not moved.</p> <p>The sample was measured at room temperature and the illuminating beam had a wavelength of 0.4859 Å (25.52 keV).</p> <p>Beamline I19-2 at Diamond Light Source, a four-circle κ-geometry diffractometer (see <a href="https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1107/97809553602060000936">[Kern 2019]</a>) with an undulator source, is described in <a href="https://doi.org/10.1107/S0909049512008801">[Nowell 2012]</a> but has since been upgraded to use a Dectris Eiger2 X 4M CdTe hybrid photon counting detector. Throughout, the sample-to-detector distance was 85 mm and the beam was attenuated to 0.2% of its full intensity.</p> <p>For each rotation scan, the data comprise a single top-level NXmx-format NeXus file named <code><filename>.nxs</code>, one or more image files named <code><filename>_00000n.h5</code>, where <code>n</code> is a numeral, and a single detector metadata file named <code><filename>_meta.h5</code>. The NeXus file contains an HDF5 virtual data set that links to the data in the image file(s), and several HDF5 external links to data in the detector metadata file.</p> <p>For internal reference of Diamond Light Source staff, these data were collected as part of commissioning visit CM31144-1. Some file names and corresponding HDF5 link targets have been altered from their original names for consistency with the file contents.</p>
Data for Korner et al. "Birds and the Post Tower in Bonn: A case study of light pollution"
<p><strong>Abstract</strong></p> <p>During six consecutive autumn seasons we registered birds that were attracted to an illuminated 41-storey building in Bonn, Germany. Casualties on the ground were disoriented by the light and in most cases collided with the building. All-night observations with numbers of casualties, effective light sources, moon, and weather parameters registered hourly allowed for analyses of the role of these factors for the attraction and disorientation of numerous migratory birds. As expected, the conspicuous façade illumination was responsible for many casualties (fatal or non-fatal). Additionally, the illuminated roof logos and even faint light sources like the emergency lights were attractive and led to casualties. Moon and rain were negatively correlated with casualties, but there was no clear correlation with other weather parameters. Turning off lights was key, but effects of other <em>ex post</em> mitigation measures were limited: shutters were not originally intended for the attenuation of light emissions, control technology was insufficient, and there was a lack of willingness of the building owner to reduce light emissions consistently, even during core bird migration periods. Conservation recommendations are derived from this case study.</p> <p> </p> <p><strong>Vögel und der „Postturm“ in Bonn: Eine Fallstudie zur Lichtverschmutzung</strong></p> <p>In sechs aufeinanderfolgenden Herbstsaisons erfassten wir die Vögel, die an ein beleuchtetes, 41stöckiges Hochhaus in Bonn (Deutschland), den sog. „Postturm “ angelockt wurden. Die Opfer am Boden waren aufgrund der Beleuchtung desorientiert und in den meisten Fällen mit dem Gebäude kollidiert. Basierend auf Beobachtungen während des gesamten Nachtverlaufes wurden die registrierten Opfer, die in Betrieb befindlichen Lichtquellen, Mond und Wettervariablen stundenweise dargestellt, um die Bedeutung dieser Faktoren für die Anlockung und Desorientierung zahlreicher Zugvögel zu analysieren. Die auffällige Fassadenbeleuchtung war erwartungsgemäß für die meisten der Todesfälle und Verletzungen verantwortlich. Zusätzlich führten die beleuchteten Firmenlogos auf dem Dach und sogar schwache Lichtquellen wie die Notbeleuchtung zu Opfern durch Anlockung, auch bei ausgeschalteter Fassadenbeleuchtung. Mond und Regen korrelierten negativ mit den Opferzahlen, aber mit anderen Wettervariablen fehlten klare Korrelationen. Das Abschalten der Beleuchtung war ausschlaggebend, während andere nachträgliche Abhilfemaßnahmen wenig wirksam waren: Sonnenschutzlamellen waren ursprünglich beim Einbau nicht dafür konzipiert, Lichtabstrahlung zu reduzieren, die Steuerungstechnik war fehleranfällig und die Bereitschaft der Gebäudeeigentümerin, Lichtemissionen selbst während der Kernzeiten des Vogelzugs konsequent zu reduzieren, war begrenzt. Aus dieser Fallstudie werden Empfehlungen für Schutzmaßnahmen abgeleitet.</p>

Segmentation of membrane of mouse, sea urchin and human oocytes from transmitted light images
<p>This dataset has been presented in our paper "An interpretable and versatile machine learning approach for oocyte phenotyping", in bioRxiv.</p> <p>It contains images acquired in transmitted light with different settings of mouse and human oocytes and sea urchin eggs, with the corresponding ground-truth of the membrane segmentation. Mouse oocyte images were taken before and during oocyte maturation (meiosis I). Some human oocyte images were taken during oocyte maturation (meiosis I), and some are M-II oocytes just after fertilization. Sea urchin images contains both fertilized and unfertilized eggs.</p> <p> </p>

Panchromatic Light-Harvesting Antenna by Supramolecular Exciton Band Engineering for Heteromeric Dye Foldamer
<p>Data to report <a href="https://doi.org/10.1016/j.chempr.2024.05.023">https://doi.org/10.1016/j.chempr.2024.05.023</a>:</p> <p>Natural photosystems accomplish panchromatic light absorption by different chromophores that are non-covalently embedded in protein matrices and mostly lack close dye-dye interactions. In this article, we introduce a light-harvesting (LH) system established by four different merocyanine dyes that are co-facially stacked by dipole-dipole interactions and a peptide-like backbone in a folded heteromer architecture to afford a panchromatic absorption band consisting of several strongly coupled exciton states. This exciton manifold allows for ultrafast and efficient energy transport in the artificial antenna. Furthermore, due to the tight stacking of the dyes in their folded state, non-radiative processes are slowed down, thereby increasing the lifetime of the excited state and the fluorescence quantum yield from <3% for the individual dyes up to 38% for the folda-heteromer. Together with the panchromatic absorption, this leads to a substantial improvement of the fluorescence brightness upon broadband excitation in comparison with its constituent chromophores.</p>
Viewing behavior and vertical eye-level light for non-image-forming effects
<p>When considering non-image-forming (NIF) light effects on people, knowing the light vertically at eye-level is necessary. However, people are dynamic in their behavior and constantly change their viewing direction. This means that light measured vertically towards a constant direction might differ from the actual light that reaches people’s eyes. If the difference is large, viewing behavior might need to be included in lighting design measurements and simulations predicting the potential of the light to induce NIF light effects. This dataset was collected during an experiment on the difference between the actual dynamic eye-level light of office workers while seated at a desk (dynamic condition) and light measured statically towards a computer screen (static condition). The dataset was collected to test the hypothesis: "There is a significant and relevant difference between simultaneously measured static and dynamic light conditions in an office environment occupied by one user." It includes measured and simulated light quantities (illuminance, alpha-opic quantities according to CIE S026 and light-driven alertness according to the non-visual direct response model) together with participants' measured face orientation (horizontal and vertical) in an office environment with a single user.</p>
The data for SKYSURF-5: Probing the Integrated Galaxy Light with a SDSS-SKYSURF Cross-Matched Catalog
<p>The SKYSURF Project (Windhorst et al. 2022) analyzes the extragalactic background light (both directly using sky background measurements and indirectly using galaxy counts) using the HST Archive. While HST images probe faint galaxies unseen by ground-based imaging, its small field of view prevents it from probing the large-scale structure around its observations.</p> <p>To supplement SKYSURF analysis, we cross-match SKYSURF pointings with SDSS observations able to probe the surrounding large-scale environment (Bhatia et al. 2024). The tables in this database include galaxies brighter than r=22.5 AB mag photometrically identified in SDSS, within +/-5 arcmin around a SKYSURF pointing.</p> <p>The tables in the Object_AB directory include information on all SDSS objects, organized by the HST camera and filter of the central pointing.</p> <p>The tables in the IGL directory include the total galaxy counts and integrated galaxy light (down to AB mag=22.5) for all SDSS objects surrounding a given SKYSURF image.</p>

Construction, validation and application of nocturnal pollen transport networks in an agro-ecosystem: datasets collected using light microscopy and DNA metabarcoding
<p>This dataset contains all data required to reproduce the analyses conducted in Macgregor <em>et al. </em>(2018), using the R Notebook archived at doi: <a href="https://dx.doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.1322712">10.5281/zenodo.1322712</a>.</p> <p>Specifically, the dataset contains details of pollen transport detected on two matched samples, each containing 311 moths of 41 species, using two methods: a traditional light microscopy approach and a novel DNA metabarcoding approach. Both raw and manually-curated versions of each dataset are archived for full clarity. THE HIGH CADENCE TRANSIENT SURVEY (HITS): Source, light-curve and classification catalogs
<p>The High Cadence Transient Survey (HiTS) aims to discover and study transient objects with characteristic timescales between hours and days, such as pulsating, eclipsing and exploding stars. This survey represents a unique laboratory to explore large <em>etendue</em> observations from cadences of about 0.1 days and to test new computational tools for the analysis of large data. This work follows a fully <em>Data Science</em> approach: from the raw data to the analysis and classification of variable sources. We compile a catalog of ~15 million object detections and a catalog of ~2.5 million light-curves classified by variability. The typical depth of the survey is 24.2, 24.3, 24.1 and 23.8 in <em>u</em>, <em>g</em>, <em> </em>r, and <em>i</em> bands, respectively. We classified all point-like non-moving sources by first extracting features from their light--curves and then applying a Random Forest classifier. For the classification, we used a training set constructed using a combination of cross-matched catalogs, visual inspection, transfer/active learning, and data augmentation. The classification model consists of several Random Forest classifiers organized in a hierarchical scheme. The classifier accuracy estimated on a test set is approximately 97%. In the unlabeled data, 3,485 sources were classified as variables, of which 1,321 were classified as periodic. Among the periodic classes we discovered with high confidence, 1 <span class="math-tex">\(\delta\)</span> scuti, 39 eclipsing binaries, 48 rotational variables, and 90 RR-Lyrae. For the non-periodic classes we discovered 1 cataclysmic variables, 630 QSO, and 1 supernova candidate.</p>
