On understanding and manipulating the hatching patterns of Diabrotica v. virgifera (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) eggs to improve the design of experiments
<p><em>Diabrotica v. virgifera </em>(Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) is a well-studied pest of maize in North America and Europe. Many studies on its biology, behaviour or management rely individuals reared from either field-collected insect or on laboratory colonies. Naturally, <em>D. v. virgifera</em> eggs require an obligate diapause which can cause technical challenges such as a deceleration of research activities. To allow better planning of experimentation, we have investigated the survival and temporal hatching patterns of the pest`s eggs depending on diapause length as well as on post-diapause incubation temperature. Several series of laboratory assays revealed that eggs from diapausing populations hatch at highest rates and with most synchronized hatching start and peaks when overwintered at natural diapause length of eight to ten months or shorter down to five months (20 to 24 °C incubation temperatures). Comparably good hatching rates were found in eggs diapaused for only two months, but hatching patterns appeared more spread and variable. Diapause shorter than two months or longer than ten months reduced hatching successes, as did low incubation temperatures. Data matrices on egg overwintering survival, on the beginning, peak, duration and termination of egg hatching, as well as on hatching rates are provided for different diapause lengths and incubation temperatures of diapausing and, as a comparison, non-diapausing <em>D. v. virigifera</em> to support scientists choosing a colony which fits best their experimental setup and study conditions, as well as to properly plan such studies.</p>
Biological Motion and Emotion: Investigating the Impact of Tempo Manipulations
<p>The video set includes 26 audiovisual or visual-only stimuli that served in the perceptual experiment of the study "Comparing original and tempo-manipulatd biological movements: From Kinematics to multimodal emotion and time perception". Among the videos, 18 were experimental stimuli while 8 were stimuli in catch trials. The experimental stimuli were named after the following format: "Manipulation_Modality", while catch trial stimuli were named after "Manipulation_Duration". Slow represents 86BPM, medium represents 130BPM, while fast represents 195BPM. "Fast2Slow_Audiovisual.mp4", for instance, stands for an audiovisual stimuli that was originally recorded in 195BPM and decelerated to 86BPM. </p>
Inhibitory control, exploration behaviour and manipulated ecological context are associated with foraging flexibility in the great tit
<p class="MsoCommentText">Organisms are constantly under selection to respond effectively to diverse, sometimes rapid, changes in their environment, but not all individuals are equally plastic in their behaviour. Although cognitive processes and personality are expected to influence individual behavioural plasticity, the effects reported are highly inconsistent, which we hypothesise is because ecological context is usually not considered.</p> <p class="MsoCommentText">We explored how one type of behavioural plasticity, foraging flexibility, was associated with inhibitory control (assayed using a detour-reaching task) and exploration behaviour in a novel environment (a trait closely linked to the fast-slow personality axis). We investigated how these effects varied across two experimentally manipulated ecological contexts, food value and predation risk.</p> <p class="MsoCommentText">In the first phase of the experiment, we trained great tits <i>Parus major</i> to retrieve high value (preferred) food that was hidden in sand so that this became the familiar food source. In the second phase, we offered them the same familiar hidden food at the same time as a new alternative option that was visible on the surface, which was either high or low value, and under either high or low perceived predation risk. Foraging flexibility was defined as the proportion of choices made during four minute trials that were for the new alternative food source.</p> <p>Our assays captured consistent differences among individuals in foraging flexibility. Inhibitory control was associated with foraging flexibility - birds with high inhibitory control were more flexible when the alternative food was high value, suggesting they inhibited the urge to select the familiar food and instead selected the new food option. Exploration behaviour also predicted flexibility – fast explorers were more flexible, supporting the information gathering hypothesis. This tendency was especially strong under high predation risk, suggesting risk aversion also influenced the observed flexibility because fast explorers are risk prone and the new unfamiliar food was perceived to be the risky option. Thus, both behaviours predicted flexibility, and these links were at least partly dependent on ecological conditions.</p> <p class="MsoCommentText">Our results demonstrate that an executive cognitive function (inhibitory control) and a behavioural assay of a well-known personality axis are both associated with individual variation in the plasticity of a key functional behaviour. That their effects on foraging flexibility were primarily observed as interactions with food value or predation risk treatments also suggests that the population level consequences of some behavioural mechanisms may only be revealed across key ecological conditions.</p>
The PS-Battles Dataset - an Image Collection for Image Manipulation Detection
<p>The boost of available digital media has led to a significant increase in derivative work. With tools for manipulating objects becoming more and more mature, it can be very difficult to determine whether one piece of media was derived from another one or tampered with. As derivations can be done with malicious intent, there is an urgent need for reliable and easily usable tampering detection methods. However, even media considered semantically untampered by humans might have already undergone compression steps or light post-processing, making automated detection of tampering susceptible to false positives. In this paper, we present the PS-Battles dataset which is gathered from a large community of image manipulation enthusiasts and provides a basis for media derivation and manipulation detection in the visual domain. Data for: Should I breed or should I go? Manipulating individual state during migration influences breeding decisions in a long-lived bird species
<p>Documentation of Carry-Over Effects (COEs), defined as effects resulting from events that occurred in a previous time period, has largely been observational and understanding of specific mechanisms underlying COEs is still lacking. To investigate this, we simulated an environmental perturbation during the spring migration of a long-lived bird species and looked at the subsequent effects on various breeding parameters. We captured female greater snow geese (<em>Anser caerulescens atlanticus</em>) on their spring staging sites and maintained individuals in captivity for up to four days before releasing them. We re-observed females 3000 km North, on their Arctic breeding grounds, to estimate their breeding propensity (i.e., probability of initiating a reproductive event for a given year), and measure their arrival date, laying date, clutch size, and nesting success. Only proxies of breeding propensity were affected by our manipulation, which decreased as the time spent in captivity increased. However, females were able to overcome the effects of captivity in two out of the three years of experimentation with normal or good environmental conditions at the breeding site. When facing the additional challenge of poor environmental conditions, many individuals manipulated during migration apparently curtailed their reproductive effort by skipping breeding. This experiment is the first to show that breeding propensity is an important parameter affected by COEs resulting from stressful events prior to reproduction in long-lived species.</p>
