etymologiae.ms: a database of the early medieval manuscripts of the Etymologiae of Isidore of Seville
<p>The Innovating Knowledge project is currently developing an online manuscript database that will bring together up-to-date information about the roughly 450 early medieval codices transmitting the most important medieval Latin encyclopaedia, the Etymologiae of Isidore of Seville. The objective of the database: not only to replace the outdated manuscript handlist of G.E. eCodicesNL: a virtual library for medieval manuscripts in Dutch collections
<p>This is a presentation about eCodicesNL: a new initiative to build a virtual library for medieval manuscripts in Dutch collections. The elements that go into this library are, just as in its model project e-codices Switzerland, high quality and complete images, high quality descriptions and an excellent search interface. The concept is simple, but the execution is not: what is the best model for creating such an aggregated library, and how can we deal with data that already exist? How can we facilitate collections to take care of their own material, and keep it updated within a collective system?</p>

<p>This webinar was funded by the Society for the Medieval Mediterranean, thanks to the “Simon Barton Postgraduate & ECR Conference Prize 2020” awarded to Nerea Fernández Cadenas (https://www.societymedievalmediterranean.com/simon-barton-postgraduate-conference-prize)<br> It has been designed to offer a forum in which scholars can debate and share their experiences about the difficulties and advantages of researching and teaching through Digital Humanities when exploring Medieval Mediterranean History.</p> <p><br> Moderated by Nerea Fernández Cadenas , speakers were:<br> <strong>Dr Jamie Wood:</strong> Associate Professor of History at the University of Lincoln. He teaches and researches the social and religious history of late antiquity and the early middle ages, especially of the Iberian Peninsula. He has been using digital tools to teach History for well over a decade. He is especially interested in digital pedagogies that encourage students to engage actively in their learning and, ultimately, to create and share the results of the independent work with others, both within and beyond the academy.</p> <p><br> <strong>Dr Charles Wes</strong>t: Reader in Medieval History at the University of Sheffield, UK. His research focuses on earlier medieval European history, and he's currently writing a book on the eleventh century for Oxford University Press. You can read about some of his teaching and research on his blog, Turbulent Priests (http://turbulentpriests.group.shef.ac.uk/). He's been teaching with Wikipedia since 2018.</p> <p><br> <strong>Dr Lynn Ramey</strong>: Professor of French at Vanderbilt University and Faculty Director of the Digital Humanities Center. As former computer programmer, she is working to create a video game engine that will allow users to play as medieval travellers. She is also running the digital project Cyprus: Crossroads of the Medieval Mediterranean that explores this multicultural world. She published several monograph: Christian, Saracen and Genre in Medieval French Literature Studies in Medieval History and Culture, with Routledge in 2001; and Black Legacies: Race and the European Middle Ages, with University Press of Florida in 2014</p> <p><br> <strong>Dr Robert Houghton</strong>: Senior Lecturer in Early Medieval History at the University of Winchester. His research focuses on the political and social networks of the kingdom of Italy c.888-c.1122 with recent publications in the Journal of Medieval History and Storicamente. His work also considers the representation of the Middle Ages in Modern Games and the ways in which these games can be used for teaching and research.</p> <p><br> <strong>Dr Ainoa Castro Correa:</strong> Lecturer in Manuscript Studies and History of the Church at the University of Salamanca, after having been Marie Curie Research Fellow at King’s College London, Virginia Brown Fellow in Latin Palaeography at the Ohio State University, and Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Notre Dame and at the Pontifical Institute of Mediaeval Studies (Toronto). She has authored several books and articles and curates a well-known site www.LitteraVisigothica.com, an online research portal on Iberian peninsular Manuscript Studies focused on Visigothic script.</p> <p><br> This webinar was recorded on 29/09/20.</p>

Wmid -b4db49 - Post Medieval figurine
A complete lead or lead alloy figurine, of uncertain dating, probably Post Medieval (AD 1600 to AD 1800). The figurine is anthropomorphic (human like), consisting of a standing male figure. The head is globular, with a flattened top hat. No facial details remain. The arms both come to the front of the body, with right arm held bent, and left arm touching the genitals. The genital area has a pronounced erect phallus, with two testicles underneath. The legs are positioned together. The feet merge into a circular platform. The reverse of the figurine is flat, with limited details. Wmid-o6dad6 - Medieval cooking pot leg
An incomplete copper alloy foot / leg from a copper alloy cooking vessel of Late Medieval to Early Post Medieval dating (AD 1400 - AD 1700). The vessel fragment is sub rectangular in shape and sub rectangular in cross section. It consists of a straight body, with an external central rib. The internal surface is smooth. At the top of the leg, an irregular surface is present, this would have adjoined to the base of the cauldron. The base of the foot is slightly abraded. Another one from the "How-good-is-my-new-phone-for-photogrammetry?" testing series:<br> <br> Cast of the early medieval tombstone from Niederdollendorf, Germany, shot in June 2019 in the special exhibition in the LVR-LandesMuseum Bonn with a RugGear RG850 smartphone. Guerilla scanning style - 63 pictures in less than 7 minutes under ambient lighting. The base of the tombstone was mounted in a pedestal and was therefore not accessible.<br> <br> For more information on the tombstone itself see https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grabstele_von_Niederdollendorf#/ or http://www.suehnekreuz.de/nrw/niederdollendorf.htm (in German).<br> <br> Modeling was not without problems - the dimensions of the limestone block might be a bit distorted. Wmid-8d4229 - Medieval Pilgrim's Ampulla
A complete lead alloy costrel-shaped ampulla of Medieval dating (Mid 13th to 14th Centuries AD). The ampulla takes the shape of a cylindrical costrel. It has a cylindrical ribbed body, with circular ends. Crosshatching is visible between each of the ribs. The neck is located centrally, with only one of two angular suspension handles surviving. One end bears an eight petalled flower, within a circular border. It has been recorded as WMID-8D4229, on the Portable Antiquities Scheme database.
