Circularly polarized photoluminescence from nanostructured arrays of light emitters

Strategically designed metamaterials can influence the properties of light emitters in several ways, including shaping of the directionality and polarization of luminescence. These properties, however, are limited in systems where the luminophores uniformly coat the metamaterial. Here, we study and design metamaterials comprised of both Au nanobars and nanopatterned light emitters. We systematically investigate the role of spatial averaging, dipole orientation, chirality, near-field effects, and other factors for these multi-material systems. Finally, we discuss multiple design routes to create metasurfaces that can emit photoluminescence of any circular polarization at any arbitrary angle. These systems simultaneously exhibit high photoluminescence intensity and tailored, directional, and polarized photoluminescence.

Hyperfine interactions in open-shell planar sp2-carbon nanostructures

ORCA data files for the publication:

S. Sengupta, T. Frederiksen, and G. Giedke
Hyperfine interactions in open-shell planar sp2-carbon nanostructures
Phys. Rev. B 107, 224433 (2023) [arXiv:2303.11422]

We investigate hyperfine interaction (HFI) using density-functional theory for several open-shell planar sp2-carbon nanostructures displaying π magnetism. Our prototype structures include both benzenoid ([n]triangulenes and a graphene nanoribbon) as well as nonbenzenoid (indene, fluorene, and indene[2,1-b]fluorene) molecules. Our results obtained with orca indicate that isotropic Fermi contact and anisotropic dipolar terms contribute in comparable strength, rendering the HFI markedly anisotropic. We find that the magnitude of HFI in these molecules can reach more than 100 MHz, thereby opening up the possibility of experimental detection via methods such as electron spin resonance-scanning tunneling microscopy (ESR-STM). Using these results, we obtain empirical models based on π-spin polarizations at carbon sites. These are defined by generic sp2 HFI fit parameters which are derived by matching the computed HFI couplings to π-spin polarizations computed with methods such as Orca, Siesta, or mean-field Hubbard (MFH) models. This approach successfully describes the Fermi contact and dipolar contributions for 13C and 1H nuclei. These fit parameters allow to obtain hyperfine tensors for large systems where existing methodology is not suitable or computationally too expensive. As an example, we show how HFI scales with system size in [n]triangulenes for large n using MFH. We also discuss some implications of HFI for electron-spin decoherence and for coherent nuclear dynamics.

Supplementary data for "Nanostructure explains the behavior of slippery covalently-attached liquid surfaces"

Slippery covalently-attached liquid surfaces (SCALS) with low contact angle hysteresis (CAH, <5˚) and nanoscale thickness display impressive anti-adhesive properties, similar to lubricant-infused surfaces.
Their efficacy is generally attributed to the liquid-like mobility of the constituent tethered chains. However, the precise physico-chemical properties that facilitate this mobility are unknown, hindering rational design. This work quantifies the chain length, grafting density, and microviscosity of a range of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) SCALS, elucidating the nanostructure responsible for their properties.

Zip files of neutron reflectometry and single-molecule force spectroscopy data are included here.

Dataset: literature review of ethanol chemiresistors based on pure SnO2 nanostructures

This dataset contains a collection of experimental data retrieved from around 160 articles reporting on ethanol chemiresistors based on pure SnO2. Pure means that they are neither intentionally doped nor intentionally loaded with any catalyst.

The retrieved data are intended to summarize the most common morphological and porosity features of the sensing layers, the characteristics of the measurement setup adopted for gas sensing tests and the figures of merit of the gas sensors, namely response intensity and response/recovery times.

The goal is to provide a dataset for benchmarking and/or statistical analysis.

The dataset is provided as a tab delimited .txt file (SnO2-ZenodoDataset.txt) accompanied by a readme file (Readme-SnO2-ZenodoDataset.pdf) that explains the definitions of the variables in the dataset and provides full citations of the sources from which the data were obtained.

Carboxymethyl starch as a reducing and capping agent in the hydrothermal synthesis of selenium nanostructures for use with 3D-printed hydrogel carrier

The hydrothermal method is a cost-effective and eco-friendly route for preparing various nanomaterials. It can utilize a capping agent, such as a polysaccharide, to govern and define the nanoparticle morphology. Elemental selenium nanostructures (spheres and rods) were synthesized and stabilized using a tailor-made carboxymethyl starch (CMS, degree of substitution = 0.3) under hydrothermal conditions. CMS is particularly convenient because it acts simultaneously as the capping and reducing agent, as verified by several analytical techniques, while the reaction relies entirely on green solvents. Furthermore, the effect of sodium selenite concentration, reaction time, and temperature on the nanoparticle size, morphology, microstructure, and chemical composition was investigated to identify the ideal synthesis conditions. A pilot experiment demonstrated the feasibility of implementing the synthesized nanoparticles into vat photopolymerization 3D-printed hydrogel carriers based on 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA). When submersed into the water, the subsequent particle release was confirmed by dynamic light scattering (DLS), promising great potential for use in bio-3D printing and other biomedical applications.

Facile synthesis of magnesium-based metal-organic framework with tailored nanostructure for effective VOCs adsorption

A novel Mg(II) metal–organic framework (Mg-MOF) was synthesised based on the ligand of 2,2'-bipyridine-4,4'dicarboxylic acid (Bpdc). Single-crystal X-ray structural analysis confirmed that 3D-nanostructure Mg-MOFs formed a monoclinic system with a channel size of 15.733 Å × 23.736 Å. The N2 adsorption isotherm, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy were performed to characterise the thermal stability and purity of the Mg-MOFs. The adsorption studies on four typical volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted during wood drying showed that Mg-MOFs have noteworthy adsorption capacities, especially for benzene and β-pinene with adsorptions of 182.26 mg/g and 144.42 mg/g, respectively. In addition, the adsorption of Mg-MOFs mainly occurred via natural adsorption, specifically, multi-layer physical adsorption, accompanied by chemical forces, which occurred in the pores where the VOCs molecules combined with active sites. As an adsorbent, Mg-MOFs exhibit versatile behaviour for toxic-gas accumulation.
