Fall 2001 plant monitoring survey -- shoot height and flowering status of plants in permanent plots at GCE sampling sites 1-10
A quadrat survey was conducted in October 2001 to measure the species and size distribution of plants at 10 GCE LTER sampling sites. The quadrats were established as permanent plots at GCE sampling sites in October 2000 by placing wooden stakes at random locations across two nominal zones at each site, designated based on marsh structure (creekbank and high marsh). Several new plots were also added in October 2001 to replace those lost due to catastrophic wrack disturbance or creek bank erosion. The plots were visually surveyed and the species, shoot height, and flowering status was recorded individually for each shoot over 10 cm in height present in each plot. Observations from plots exhibiting signs of disturbance were noted in the data set. This survey will be repeated annually to assess changes in plant distribution and biomass in relation to environmental changes documented by other GCE LTER monitoring efforts.
Soil moisture, temperature and relative humidity for subalpine forest permanent plots, 2017 - 2021.
We collected microclimate data for 12 permanent forest plots in subalpine forests and at alpine treeline at Niwot Ridge, Colorado, USA. We collected soil temperature (2015-2020), air temperature (2015-2020), air relative humidity (2015-2020), and soil moisture data (2015-2019). Soil temperature, air temperature, and air relative humidity data were collected year-round, but they are not necessarily continuous during the sample period due to instrument failure. The goal of winter soil temperature data collection was to estimate snow duration. Soil moisture was collected every two weeks from 2015-2019 and continuously from June to October in three sites in 2018 and 2019. Parramore Island of the Virginia Coast Reserve Permanent Plot Baseline Data : Plot Coordinates 1992-1993
This contains coordinates (UTM zone 18N, NAD27) for permanent vegetation plots on Parramore Island. Plots were established using a uniform random number generator to generate random coordinates. One hundred of the random points that fell on the upland portion of Parramore Island (based on the McCaffrey vegetation maps) were selected as plot centers.
Vegetation and Ground Cover of Permanent Plots for Upper Phillips Creek Marsh, Nassawadox, VA 1990-2014
Juncus roemerianus, the black needlerush, is a commonly found salt marsh plant. It exists especially in areas of little tidal inundation and low salinities. As such, it may play an important role in the accretion of marshes where sediment sources are not readily accessible. Biogenic accretion of marshes is a slow process representing the net result of production and decomposition. To study the process effectively requires long-term observations and experiments. We will initiate research at this site by selecting locations for study, collecting preliminary data on the locations, and designing long-term experiments. Plots for long-term observations will allow for analyses of changes in dominance of cover by plant species. We will choose plots to include the interface between J. roemerianus and other species and will follow changes at the interface. Also attached is an unpublished manuscript (PDF/A format) containing details of the data and some analyses.

These coordinates should be equivalent to those received by GPS using the WGS84 spheroid, and are in the form most useful for navigating in the field using handheld GPS. Permanent forest plot data from 1982-2019 at Niwot Ridge, Colorado
The permanent forest plots at Niwot Ridge were installed in subalpine forests in the Colorado Front Range by Dr. Thomas T. Veblen in the early 1980s. The goal was to establish a set of long-term forest plots to monitor tree populations and stand dynamics over time. Ten large permanent plots (i.e., from 21 x 54m to 54 m x 54 m) were installed to monitor ~ 400 trees per plot. An additional thirty smaller ‘gap’ plots (i.e. approximately 10 m x 10 m) were installed in canopy openings adjacent to three of the large permanent plots to monitor gap dynamics (c. 40 trees per plot). Three new plots (42x42 m) were installed in 2016 (MRS11,13) or 2017 (MRS12) following the protocol for the large permanent plots. The plots are located across gradients in elevation and site moisture conditions. Plots include the following subalpine tree species: lodgepole pine (“Pinus contorta”), limber pine (“Pinus flexilis”), Engelmann spruce (“Picea engelmannii”), subalpine fir (“Abies lasiocarpa”), and aspen (“Populus tremuloides”). When the plots were installed, all living and standing dead trees were permanently tagged, and the following was measured for all live and dead trees less than 4 cm dbh: species, diameter at breast height (1.4 m), height class, and status (live or dead). Censuses of tree mortality were conducted roughly every three years, except the period 1994-2007, and a complete re-measurement (e.g. dbh measurements) was conducted in 2016 (see methods for details) and a status check (live/dead) was conducted in 2019. Counts of juvenile trees (less than 4 cm dbh) by species were conducted when the plots were installed and in 2017. This database includes three datasets: 1) description of plots (e.g. elevation, aspect, size), 2) tree data (e.g. dbh, height class, status) for all trees (greater than 4 cm dbh) monitored from early 1980s to 2019, and 3) counts of juvenile trees (less than 4 cm) by species in early 1980s and 2017.
Full inventory of ten permanent plots installed in pockets of different tree functional types along the Moni River transects (Yangambi, Democratic Republic of Congo)
<p>Most of the tropical forests of Central Africa are characterised by a remarkable abundance of light-demanding canopy species. A popular hypothesis is that these forests are still recovering from the intense slash-and-burn farming activities that ended abruptly in the 19th century with the arrival of the colonists. Today, it is assumed that the zones occupied by crop fields until the 19th century are covered by forests dominated by light-demanding species. However, this hypothesis of human disturbance has not yet been sufficiently tested using spatial distribution. So, using the 'Kernel Density Estimation' (KDE) tool in the SAGA GIS software, we mapped the density distribution of light-demanding species, subdivided into 3 tree functional types, along transects in the Moni river catchment. We also produced a similar map for a particular shade-tolerant species, 'Gilbertiodendron dewevrei'. The species were then divided into the following groups, known as 'functional tree types': LLP=Long-Lived Pioneer, NPLD=Non-Pioneer Light Demanding, SLP=Short-Lived Pioneer, and STS=Shade-Tolerant Species. At the end of this analysis, a density distribution map of the species of each tree functional type was produced. This map highlights the pockets (zones with a high density relative to the study site average) of tree functional types. For each type of pocket, we selected the pockets with a high density of trees of the group concerned and which were not on the edge between the forest and village crops or fallow land. This is how the location of the permanent plots was determined. Next, we installed a total of ten full forest inventory plots (1 ha each) inside and outside the pockets located by the KDE analysis along the Moni River transects. More specifically, we installed one plot in a pocket of short-lived pioneers (SLP-01), three plots in pockets of long-lived pioneers (LLP-01 to -03), two plots in pockets of NPLD (NPLD-01 and -02), two plots in pockets of the shade-tolerant species Gilbertiodendron dewevrei (GIL-01 and -02) and finally two plots were located in a mixed old-growth forest outside the pockets (MIX-01 and -02). These plots were established (1) for long-term monitoring of biodiversity and forest dynamics; and (2) to see if there is a difference in terms of species composition and abundance of light demanders between the forest inside the pockets and that outside the pockets.</p>
