Phenomenon of music-induced opening of the blood-brain barrier in healthy mice
<p class="MsoBodyText">Music plays a more important role in our life than just being an entertainment. For example, it can be used as anti-anxiety therapy of human and animals. However, the unsafe listening of loud music triggers hearing loss in millions of young people and professional musicians (rock, jazz, and symphony orchestra) due to exposure to damaging sound levels using personal audio devices or at noisy entertainment venues including nightclubs, discotheques, bars, and concerts. Therefore, it is important to understand how loud music affects us.</p> <p class="MsoBodyText">In this pioneering study on healthy mice, we discover that loud rock music below the safety threshold causes opening of the blood-brain barrier (OBBB), which plays an vital role in protecting the brain from viruses, bacteria and toxins. We clearly demonstrate that listening loud music during 2 hrs in an intermittent adaptive regime is accompanied by delayed (1h after music exposure) and short-lasting (during 1-4 hrs) OBBB to low and high molecular weight compounds without cochlear and brain impairments. We present the systemic and molecular mechanisms responsible for music-induced OBBB. Finally, a revision of our traditional knowledge about the BBB nature and the novel strategies in optimizing of sound-mediated methods for brain drug delivery are discussed.</p>
Data from: Processing political misinformation: comprehending the Trump phenomenon
This study investigated the cognitive processing of true and false political information. Specifically, it examined the impact of source credibility on the assessment of veracity when information comes from a polarizing source (Experiment 1), and effectiveness of explanations when they come from one's own political party or an opposition party (Experiment 2). These experiments were conducted prior to the 2016 Presidential election. Participants rated their belief in factual and incorrect statements that President Trump made on the campaign trail; facts were subsequently affirmed and misinformation retracted. Participants then re-rated their belief immediately or after a delay. Experiment 1 found that (i) if information was attributed to Trump, Republican supporters of Trump believed it more than if it was presented without attribution, whereas the opposite was true for Democrats and (ii) although Trump supporters reduced their belief in misinformation items following a correction, they did not change their voting preferences. Experiment 2 revealed that the explanation's source had relatively little impact, and belief updating was more influenced by perceived credibility of the individual initially purporting the information. These findings suggest that people use political figures as a heuristic to guide evaluation of what is true or false, yet do not necessarily insist on veracity as a prerequisite for supporting political candidates.
Data from: Global patterns of the double mutualism phenomenon
A double mutualism (DM) occurs when two interacting species benefit each other in two different functions, e.g. when an animal species acts both as pollinator and seed disperser of the same plant. Besides the double benefit, a DM also imposes a larger risk to both functions if the performance of one partner declines. We conducted the first global review of DMs involving pollinators and seed dispersers, aiming to: (1) assess their prevalence across ecosystems and biogeographical regions; (2) identify the main plant and animal taxa, and their traits, implicated in DMs; and (3) evaluate the conservation status of double mutualist species. We compiled published and unpublished DM records using specific search terms, noting the species involved, their conservation status and geographic location, as well as the type of study (species vs community-level) in which the DM was detected. We identified 302 DM cases involving 207 plant and 92 animal species from 16 mainland and 17 island areas. Most records come from tropical regions and islands. Animals included birds (62%), mammals (22%), and reptiles (16%), mostly opportunist species; only 18% were nectarivores. Plants were mainly fleshy-fruited shrub or tree species (59%) with actinomorphic flowers that were visited by several or many pollinator species (87%). Most (56%) DMs were detected in community-level studies. DMs are mostly prevalent in ecosystems with limited food resources and mutualist partners, and with high generalization levels. Nearly 30% of the species involved in DMs are threatened according to IUCN criteria, 68% of which are found on islands. The high prevalence of DM on islands paired with the threat status of island species suggest that the loss of a double mutualists and its cascading consequences may have a severe impact on community composition and functioning of fragile island ecosystems.
Data from: Fledgling adoption in European Blackbirds: an unrecognised phenomenon in a well-known species
Adoption behaviour is well-known in birds, but the majority of adoption studies concern the nestling phase of birds' lives, whereas fledgling adoption is a much less well-known phenomenon, especially in passerines. During 17 years of observations, we collected data on the fate of 238 broods of European Blackbirds Turdus merula. In 171 cases fledglings were fed only by their own parents, in 24 cases the fledglings were given to adoption, while in 43 cases at least one fledgling was cared for by foster parents. Our analyses suggest that fledgling adoption in Blackbirds occurred under conditions that are consistent with the predictions of two hypotheses that explain the adoption phenomenon in birds. First, adoptions involved young fledglings of roughly the same age as the foster parents' offspring and in the context of a short distance between the biological parents and foster parents' nests: this gave rise to errors in foster parents recognizing their own young – in line with the Reproductive Error Hypothesis. Second, adoptions also occurred in instances where the distance between nests and the age difference between the adopted and the foster parents' own fledglings was twice as great compared to the conditions suggesting erroneous adoption. The longer distance between nests and the bigger age difference are in line with the Intergeneration Conflict Hypothesis.

Critical thickness phenomenon in single-crystalline wires under torsion
<p>These data are related to our paper "Dabiao Liu*, Xu Zhang, Yuan Li, and D. J. Dunstan. Critical Thickness Phenomenon in Single-Crystalline Wires under Torsion. Acta Materialia, 150 (2018), 213-23." In this work, Analysis of idealised thin single-crystal wires under torsion based on the continuum theory of dislocations gives results in accordance with the critical thickness theory. The dislocation-free zone near the wire surface and the nearly-zero stress around the wire axis are predicted by both the continuum dislocation theory and critical thickness theory. It is demonstrated that the size effect at the onset of yielding, the distributions of stress and geometrically necessary dislocations in the thin wires in torsion, simply result from the critical thickness effect. A continuous increase of plastic strain from the neutral axis toward the wire surface is indicated. The plastic strain becomes (nearly) flat around the wire surface. Such a phenomenon is attributed to the fact that this is the region in which dislocations sources can operate, to provide the geometrically necessary dislocations required by the plastic strain gradient beneath. The results of continuum dislocation theory quantitatively elucidate the critical thickness phenomenon occurred in single-crystal wires under torsion. This links the continuum dislocation theory to the underlying physical picture of Matthews' critical thickness theory.</p>
