Tawi Said Archaeological Survey: Photos

This is part of the data (photos) obtained during the survey at Tawi Said 2018. More data can be found in the other submissions of the Tawi Said Archaeological Survey community.

The site of Tawi Said is located in the Al-Sharqiyah governorate, approximately 5 km northwest of the modern city of Bidiyah, on the edge of the Sharqiyah Desert. It was discovered in 1976 by Beatrice de Cardi. Two years later, she returned to conduct small scale excavations at the site. Subsequently, numerous references to the site were made in the literature as the only known settlement of the Wadi Suq period (2000-1600 BC) in Central Oman.

In November 2018, a short survey was conducted by the Goethe University Frankfurt, Germany, in Tawi Said. An area of 150 x 120 m was intensively field-walked in 1.5 m wide transects to ensure complete visual coverage of the investigated area. Each find received an ascending number and its exact location was recorded using a portable GPS device. In total, nearly 7500 objects were documented that date back to the Wadi Suq, as well as the (late) Islamic period. Among the finds, the largest group of artefacts, by far, is of pottery sherds, followed by marine shells and snails, stone artefacts, metal objects, and jewellery. Furthermore, two stamp seals, one of them of a Wadi Suq period date, were found.

Indicative distribution map for Ecosystem Functional Group M1.5 Photo-limited marine animal forests

This archive contains indicative distribution maps and profiles for M1.5 Photo-limited marine animal forests, a ecosystem functional group (EFG, level 3) of the IUCN Global Ecosystem Typology (v2.0). Please refer to Keith et al. (2020) for details.

The descriptive profiles provide brief summaries of key ecological traits and processes, maps are indicative of global distribution patterns, and are not intended to represent fine-scale patterns. The maps show areas of the world containing major (value of 1, coloured red) or minor occurrences (value of 2, coloured yellow) of each ecosystem functional group. Minor occurrences are areas where an ecosystem functional group is scattered in patches within matrices of other ecosystem functional groups or where they occur in substantial areas, but only within a segment of a larger region. Given bounds of resolution and accuracy of source data, the maps should be used to query which EFG are likely to occur within areas, rather than which occur at particular point locations. Detailed methods and references for the maps are included in the profile (xml format).

Orthorectfied photo mosaics derived from UAV overflights of the fifteen NPP study sites at Jornada Basin LTER in 2019

This data package contains orthorectified mosaic photographs of each of the 15 NPP study sites at the Jornada Basin LTER in southern New Mexico, USA. The mosaics were derived from raw images collected during uncrewed aerial vehicle (UAV) overflight missions conducted in late summer and early autumn of 2019 (1 overflight day per site). For each site one or two missions were flown during an afternoon using a DJI Phantom 4 UAV, and between 450 and 1300 12.4 megapixel RGB images were captured. A subset of images captured at each site were loaded into Agisoft Metashape software to derive orthorectified photo mosaics. The raw images are not provided but can be made available via project PIs. This data package includes one centimeter resolution orthomosaic images of all 15 sites as geotiff raster files. Other derived products from these UAV missions, including digital elevation models, digital terrain models, and sparse point clouds, are available in other EDI data packages (knb-lter-jrn.210543002, knb-lter-jrn.210543003, and knb-lter-jrn.210543004, respectively). This study is complete.

SBC LTER: Reef: Benthic Composition Experiment: photo quad

These data quantify recruitment and percent cover of invertebrates and algae recruiting across five sampling sites (Arroyo Quemado, Naples, Isla Vista, Mohawk, and Carpentaria) along the Santa Barbara Coast and two sites at Santa Cruz Island (San Pedro Point and Cavern Point). Sampling began Sep 2021 and is conducted seasonally every three months. A housed Canon 5DR SLR camera with a 16 mm lens, two strobes, and a 25x35 cm quadrat is used to collect photographs for data collection on all 24 rock plates, 24 PVC recruitment plates, and 24 control quadrats within two circular plots at each site. Plot 1 represents the control plot with no giant kelp removal and plot 2 represents the kelp clearing plot where all giant kelp is removed. Photographs are uploaded to a cloud-based image analysis platform (ViQi) and point contact analysis is conducted on 100 points in the lab. Occasionally, additional points were collected to show the presence of interested species or lifestage (e.g., kelp recruit). After all photographs have been taken, all recruitment plates are cleaned and all erect understory algae are removed seasonally from half of the rock plates for both plots (Plot 1 rock plates #1-6 and Plot 2 rock plates #13-18) to measure seasonal recruitment. Recruitment is measured as a proportion of the number of individuals found in each photograph. Data are contained in one table depicting seasonally collected invertebrate and algae recruitment and their percent cover for given sites and sampling periods.
