Soil nitrogen and phosphorus effects on plant virus density, transmission, and species interactions

This data package includes data and code from an experiment testing the effects of nitrogen and phosphorus addition on interactions between two grass viruses (BYDV-PAV and CYDV-RPV). Data include virus density within oats (Avena sativa) and transmission of viruses to a second set of oats. Data were collected by Amy E. Kendig and collaborators between February 2014 and August 2014 at the University of Minnesota in St. Paul Minnesota, USA. Experiments were performed in growth chambers, virus density data were obtained using one-step reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR), and transmission data were obtained using RT-PCR. The code includes statistical analyses and figures. Model objects created through statistical analyses are also included. The code was run using R (version 3.5.2).

Emerging fungal pathogen of an invasive grass: Implications for competition with native plant species

This data package includes data and code from an experiment testing the effects of a leaf spot fungal infection and competition from the invasive (to the U.S.) grass Microstegium vimineum on the performance of three native grass species: Dichanthelium clandestinum, Elymus virginicus, and Eragrostis spectabilis. The experiment was performed between June and September of 2019 in a greenhouse on the University of Florida campus in Gainesville, FL, USA. The leaf spot infection is caused by the fungal pathogen Bipolaris gigantea, which has recently emerged on populations of M. vimineum in the U.S. We tested the hypothesis that infection of B. gigantea would both directly and indirectly affect the native grass species by measuring the change in biomass of each species with and without pathogen inoculation (direct effects) and by measuring the effect of pathogen inoculation on M. vimineum competition through changes in native grass biomass across a density gradient of M. vimneum (indirect effects). The code includes statistical analyses and figures. The code was run using R (version 4.0.1).

The abstract below was extracted from the Level 0 data package and is included for context: Canopy coverage and frequency were recorded in 20 circular 10 sq m plots. Six treatments were sampled, three ungrazed and three to grazed by native grazers. In each case one of the three watersheds was unburned, another burned annually in April, the third burned every four years in April. In each treatment two soils were sampled: a lower-slope deep fertile nonrocky soil (tully silty clay loam), and a shallow rocky soil (florence cherty silt loam) on level to gently sloping ridges. In 1983 another ungrazed annual burn area '1c' was added 'both tully and florence soils' because original area '1d' appeared aberrant.

This dataset contains invasive plant and stand level data for study sites along the Dalton and Parks highways in interior Alaska in the summer of 2012. Study sites were situated in burned and mature black spruce forests to compare invasive plant colonization patterns. Invasive plant density estimates along the road adjacent to each site are included, as well as invasive plant density within study sites. Other data includes ground cover estimates for dominant ground cover types, estimates of seedling abundance for dominant tree species, soil paramters (mineral soil pH and mineral soil moisture, residual organic layer/ organic layer depths, and active layer depths).

Plant species percent cover data: Successional Dynamics on a Resampled Chronosequence

The purpose of this observational study is to describe the dynamics of ecosystem succession. The change in the number, type, and amount of plant and grazing animal species is monitored in more than 20 fields. These fields were previously cultivated, but then abandoned from agriculture at various times in the past. The fields were left undisturbed for plants to develop from seeds within the soil or brought into the fields by wind or animals. Permanent transects have been established in these abandoned fields for purposes of sampling in a consistent location from year to year. Permanent plots along these transects have been used to sample soil nutrients, (in particular, nitrogen) abundance of vegetation, species composition and herbivore populations. The sampling occurs approximately every 6 years. In the initial survey, 100 quadrats of size 1 by 0.5 m were sampled per field in 23 different fields. Abandoned fields included in E014 are 4, 5, 10, 21, 24, 26, 27, 28, 32, 35, 39, 40, 41, 44, 45, 47, 53, 70, 72, 76, 77. Fields 22(B), 29(A), and 69(C) were originally included in E014 but used for other purposes shortly after the start of the study. This experiment was established in 1983 and 1989 by principal investigators Johannes Knops and David Tilman. Past work at CDR and elsewhere has demonstrated an overriding influence of fire frequency in maintaining prairie openings and oak savanna at the prairie-forest border. Fire regimes harm some types of species while favoring others and drive light and nutrient dynamics, which in turn drive community functional attributes and diversity levels. Ultimately, fire frequency interacts with climate, N deposition, land use, and biotic invasion to determine the outcomes of tree-grass interactions and the dynamics of vegetation at ecotones such as the prairie-forest border in Minnesota. PEW01 Plant species composition and edaphic properties in wallow and non-wallow plots at Konza Prairie

Bison wallows—bare depressions formed by repeated trampling and dust-bathing—introduce fine-scale heterogeneity to tallgrass prairie soils and plant communities. We compared plant communities and edaphic properties of wallows to adjacent non-wallow plots and cattle-grazed plots. Wallows had reduced organic matter and nitrogen but elevated clay and sodium. Non-fenced wallows had lower plant species richness than fenced wallows and all non-wallows. However, wallows supported distinct plant communities, including wetland species in temporary pools. While bison-grazed areas generally had higher plant diversity, wallows added localized variation not found in cattle or fenced plots. Our results suggest wallows function as small-scale ecosystem engineering features, shaping soil conditions and plant composition.

Krummholz island plant species density data for East of Tvan, 2000.

Species richness (density) on one meter sq. plots were measured on windward and leeward sides of krummholz trees previously studied by Seastedt and colleagues. Species richness of adjacent dry meadow tundra areas was also sampled. The results indicate that species richness is initially increased by the passage of tree islands. Richness was higher in leeward areas than on either windward or open tundra sites. The hypothesis that successional species must tolerate low nitrogen conditions found in the windward sites of tree islands was not supported by findings obtained here.

N fertilization experiment plant species composition data for north of the saddle from 2011 to ongoing, yearly

In August 2010, N fertilization plots were established over a gradient of Geum rossii (Aco) and Deschampsia caespitosa (Des) cover in an area of moist-wet meadow alpine tundra north of the Saddle on Niwot Ridge. A total of 20 plots were set up, with 1X-10X being control plots where no nitrogen (N) was added, and 1N-10N being fertilization plots where N was added. Control and fertilized plots were paired so that pairs had the same percent cover of Aco and Des. Initially in 2010, N addition plots were fertilized at a rate of 28.8 g N x m^2 x yr^-1 (72 g of slow-release Osmocote (40-0-0)). In 2011 fertilization rate was reduced to N x m^2 x yr^-1 (25 g Osmocote (2011-2013), Duration Urea 120, 40-0-0, SGN 150 (2014-on).

Elevation gradient plant species composition data for A1, B1, C1, D1, 1953 - 1996.

Plant species presence and abundance (Kooiman and Korb data) were recorded at four stands along an elevational gradient in the Front Range of Colorado. Each stand location was determined by Dr. John Marr. The Marr species data were recorded from at least 12 3ft x 3ft plots located in the corners of his 66ft x 66ft tree quadrats. Only species presence was recorded, not abundance. The Kooiman and Lindhart as well as the Korb data were collected from 50 85cm x 100cm plots which were systematically located within a sampling strip measuring 2m x 100m. Plots were located every two meters alternating left and right of the sampling strip. Species present in the strip but not in the plots were recorded by Kooiman as well as Korb. Species names in this data set are from Weber and Wittman 1996; the Marr and Kooiman datasets were updated using Weber and Wittman's list.

Plant species composition data for Martinelli slope, 1988 - 1997.

Permanent plots were established on the Martinelli slope in 1987. The 25 plots are organized in a Latin square design consisting of 5 rows and 5 columns. Plots are numbered according to row and column, beginning with 11 at the northwest corner of the grid. Plot 55 is located at the southeast corner of the grid. Each plot has dimensions of 1.5 m x 2.0 m. The corners of each plot are marked with rebar stakes. Each plot is divided into an evenly spaced grid consisting of 15 x 20 points on each side, for a total of 300 points, with each point situated 10 cm from its nearest neighbors. Plant species composition was measured using the point-quadrat method every year. The point-quadrat method used was similar to that described by Auerbach (1992): The point-quadrat method was used for estimating canopy stratification and plant cover. Aluminum point-quadrat frames were 3m^2 in size, with double-layer filament spaced 10 cm apart to make a 145 x 195 cm grid for a total of 300 sample points per plot. Plant genus and species at the top and bottom of the canopy were recorded hits at each point. In addition, vegetation condition and hit quality were recorded for each of the data points.
