In-situ relative humidity and air temperature urban microclimate data
<p>Monitoring and understanding the variability of heat within cities is important for urban planning and public health, and there has been a growth in the number of studies measuring intra-urban temperature variability. Recognizing that the physiological effects of heat depend on humidity as well as temperature, some of these measurement campaigns have included measurements of relative humidity alongside temperature. Reported analyses, however, have not reported whether spatial structure in humidity, independent from temperature, contributes significantly to intra-urban heat variability. Here we use summer temperature and humidity from networks of stationary sensors in multiple cities in the USA to examine this issue. It is shown that although there are spatial variations in relative humidity there are only very weak spatial variations in the absolute humidity within these cities. This variability in absolute humidity plays an insignificant role in the spatial variability of the heat index and humidex, and the spatial variability of the heat metrics is dominated by temperature variability. A practical consequence of this is that a network of sensors that only measure temperature is sufficient to quantify the spatial variability of heat across these cities when combined with humidity measured at a single location, allowing for lower-cost heat monitoring networks.</p>

Exposure to elevated relative humidity in laboratory chambers alters fungal gene expression in dust from the International Space Station (ISS)
Microbes are present in all occupied indoor environments, including the International Space Station (ISS). An unexpected ventilation system failure may lead to microbial and fungal growth that is associated with material degradation or negative health effects. There is a need for improved understanding of fungal function when exposed to moisture in indoor spaces. A de novo metatranscriptomic study was performed using dust collected from within the ISS. After returning to Earth, dust was incubated in laboratory chambers to simulate relative humidity conditions of 50%, 85%, or 100% equilibrium relative humidity (ERH) for 1-week. Changes in fungal function (gene expression) were associated with moisture exposure. Genes associated with secondary metabolism and fungal growth were significantly upregulated (p ≤ 0.001, log2FC ≥ 2) at elevated RH conditions (85% or 100% ERH). Elevated moisture conditions showed an increased expression of mycotoxin and fungal allergen genes such as Asp f 4 and Alt a 7 (log2FC ≥ 5). These results demonstrate that understanding microbial gene expression in response to elevated moisture will help improve microbial monitoring standards for confined spacecraft environments and help protect astronaut health and spacecraft integrity.

MLS/Aura Level 2 Relative Humidity With Respect To Ice V004 (ML2RHI) at GES DISC
ML2RHI is the EOS Aura Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS) standard product for relative humidity with respect to ice derived from radiances measured by the 118 and 190 GHz radiometers. The data version is 4.2. Spatial coverage is near-global (-82 degrees to +82 degrees latitude), with each profile spaced 1.5 degrees or ~165 km along the orbit track (roughly 15 orbits per day). The recommended useful vertical range is from 316 to 0.0215 hPa, and the vertical resolution is between 3 and 6 km. Users of the ML2RHI data product should read section 3.20 of the EOS MLS Level 2 Version 4 Quality Document for more information.The data are stored in the version 5 EOS Hierarchical Data Format (HDF-EOS5), which is based on the version 5 Hierarchical Data Format, or HDF-5. Each file contains two swath objects (profile and column data), each with a set of data and geolocation fields, swath attributes, and metadata.
