<p>Dataset for study "‘Conditional Acceptance’ (additional experiments required): A scoping review of recent evidence on key aspects of Open Peer Review", 2022 preprint by Tony Ross-Hellauer and Serge Horbach.</p> <p>Dataset includes excel file with 10 sheets showing systematic literature search (per PRISMA-SCR protocol) of academic databases (Web of Science, Scopus), snowballing and web-search to identify 52 studies on key aspects of Open Peer Review published from Jan 2017 until May 2022.</p> <p><strong>Study Abstract: </strong>Diverse efforts are underway to reform the journal peer review system. Combined with growing interest in Open Science practices, Open Peer Review (OPR) has become of central concern to the scholarly community. However, what Open Peer Review is understood to encompass and how effective some of its elements are in meeting the expectations of the peer review system, are uncertain. This scoping review updates previous efforts to summarise research on OPR to date. Following the PRISMA methodological framework, it addresses the question: “What evidence has been reported in the scientific literature from 2017 to date regarding uptake, attitudes, and efficacy of two key aspects of Open Peer Review (Open Identities and Open Reports)?” The review identifies, analyses and synthesises 52 studies matching inclusion criteria, finding that OPR is growing, but still far from common practice. Our findings indicate positive attitudes towards Open Reports and more sceptical approaches to Open Identities. Changes in reviewer behaviour seem limited. and no evidence for lower acceptance rates of review invitations or slower turnaround times is reported. Concerns about power dynamics and potential backfiring on critical reviews are in need of further experimentation. We conclude that elements of OPR seem to be gaining acceptance, but more experimentation is needed. Evidence still mainly consists of either survey data or case studies of individual or few journals, not allowing for generalisability across fields and journals, and revealing no studies which compare the quality of review under Open Identities or Open Reports versus other modes of peer review.</p>

Data for: Post-migratory nonbreeding movements of birds: a review and case study
<p><span>Seasonal migrations are fascinating and ecologically important, but many migratory species are declining as climate change and land-use change alter the habitats used by migrants across the annual cycle. While some migratory birds use a single wintering site, others undertake large-scale post-migratory movements during the nonbreeding season. Technological advances that enable tracking individual birds are uncovering more examples of post-migratory nonbreeding movements. Documenting these movements is important for conservation, which requires understanding when and where migrants use habitats throughout their range. Here, we reviewed existing literature and collected information on the post-migratory nonbreeding movements of 92 migratory bird species from 18 orders across six continents. Among these records, the most commonly reported drivers of movements were resource availability and climate. This strong dependence of post-migratory nonbreeding movements on birds' abiotic and biotic environments suggests that environmental change will impact the patterns of these movements and potentially the fitness of species that undertake them. We also reviewed post-migratory nonbreeding movements in North American-breeding thrushes from the genus Catharus to examine the drivers of these movements in five closely related migratory species. We find that species that are less territorial are more likely to use multiple sites during the nonbreeding season; however, there is little evidence for dietary, evolutionary, or environmental differences between thrush species that move during winter and those that are stationary. While we believe our study represents the most comprehensive list of species exhibiting post-migratory nonbreeding movements to date, biases in sampling, a lack of common terminology for these movements, and the still-nascent availability of inexpensive, lightweight tracking devices mean that there are probably many more populations that undertake such movements. Future research into the consequences of post-migratory nonbreeding movements for individual fitness and ecosystem services would advance our understanding of their conservation importance and their evolution.</span></p>

(<a href="https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jhazmat.2023.131839">https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jhazmat.2023.131839</a>)</strong></p> <p><em>Abstract</em></p> <p>In recent years, the number of publications on nano- and microplastic particles (NMPs) effects on freshwater organisms has increased rapidly. Freshwater crustaceans of the genus <em>Daphnia</em> are widely used in ecotoxicological research as model organisms for assessing the impact of NMPs. However, the diversity of experimental designs in these studies makes conclusions about the general impact of NMPs on <em>Daphnia</em> challenging. To approach this, we systematically reviewed the literature on NMP effects on <em>Daphnia</em> and summarized the diversity of test organisms, experimental conditions, NMP properties and measured endpoints to identify gaps in our knowledge of NMP effects on <em>Daphnia</em>. We use a meta-analysis on mortality and immobilization rates extracted from the compiled literature to illustrate how NMP properties, study parameters and the biology of <em>Daphnia</em> can impact outcomes in toxicity bioassays. In addition, we investigate the extent to which the available data can be used to predict the toxicity of untested NMPs based on the extracted parameters. Based on our results, we argue that focusing on a more diverse set of NMP properties combined with a more detailed characterization of the particles in future studies will help to fill current research gaps, improve predictive models and allow the identification of NMP properties linked to toxicity.</p>

Librarians and information specialists as methodological peer-reviewers: a case-study of the International Journal of Health Governance. Datasets
<p>Objectives of this study were to analyze the impact of including librarians and information specialist as methodological peer-reviewers, because they can enhance methodologies in evidence synthesis. We sought to determine if and how librarians’ comments differed from subject peer-reviewers’; whether there were differences in the implementation of their recommendations; how this impacted editorial decision-making, and the perceived utility of librarian peer review by librarians and authors. We used a mixed method approach, conducting a qualitative analysis of reviewer reports, author replies and editors’ decisions of submissions to the International Journal of Health Governance. Our content analysis categorized 16 thematic areas so methodological and subject peer-reviewers’ comments, decisions and rejection rates could be compared. Categories were based on the standard areas covered in peer-review (e.g., title, originality, etc.) as well as additional in-depth categories relating to the methodology (e.g., search strategy, reporting guidelines, etc.). We developed and used criteria to judge reviewers’ perspectives and code their comments. Methodological peer-reviewers assessed 13 evidence synthesis manuscripts submitted between September 2020 and March 2023. 55 reviewer reports were collected: 25 from methodological peer-reviewers, 30 from subject peer-reviewers.</p>
