pH-sensitive thiamethoxam nanoparticles based on bimodal mesoporous silica for improving insecticidal efficiency

<p>In this study, we synthesized pH-sensitive thiamethoxam-3-(2-aminoethylamino) propyl-bimodal mesoporous silica (P/Thi-NN-BMMs) nanoparticles (NPs). We used this bimodal mesoporous silica (BMMs) mesoporous material as a carrier based on the principle of free radical polymerization. The size of the P/Thi-NN-BMMs NPs was about 891.7<span>±4.9</span> nm, with a zeta potential of about −25.7<span>±2.5</span> mV. X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) analysis, N<sub>2</sub>-sorption measurements, and thermogravimetric (TG) analysis indicated that thiamethoxam (Thi) was loaded into the pores of the mesoporous structure and that the mesopore surface was coated with polyacrylic acid (PAA). The loading rate of P/Thi-NN-BMMs was about 25.2%. The controlled-release NPs had excellent anti-photolysis performance and storage stability. The NPs showed significant pH sensitivity, and the Thi release rate in pH 10.0 phosphate buffer was higher than those in pH 7.4 and pH 3.0 phosphate buffers. We described the sustained-release curves according to the Weibull model. The relative toxicity of P/Thi-NN-BMMs against <i>peach aphid</i> was 1.44 times that of commercial Thi. This provides a promising instrument for effective insect control and environment protection.</p>

Data from: A shift from phenol to silica-based leaf defenses during long-term soil and ecosystem development

<p>The resource availability hypothesis predicts that plants adapted to infertile soils have high levels of anti-herbivore leaf defenses. This hypothesis has been mostly explored for secondary metabolites such as phenolics, while it remains underexplored for silica-based defenses. We determined leaf concentrations of total phenols and silicon (Si) in plants growing along the 2-million-year Jurien Bay chronosequence, exhibiting an extreme gradient of soil fertility. We found that nitrogen (N) limitation on young soils led to a greater expression of phenol-based defenses, whereas old, phosphorus (P)-impoverished soils favored silica-based defenses. Both defense types were negatively correlated at the community and individual species level. Our results suggest a tradeoff among these two leaf defense strategies based on the strength and type of nutrient limitation, thereby opening up new perspectives for the resource availability hypothesis and plant defense research. This study also highlights the importance of silica-based defenses under low P supply.</p>

Data set for: Effects of microstructure evolution on compressive strength of silica sand-enhanced oil well cement at a wide temperature range

<p><span>The influence of microstructure of silica-enhanced cement on the mechanical performance of cement is difficult to be described. In this study, we used the scanning electron microscope and image processing method to investigate the relationship between the complicity of cement microstructure and compressive strength under various temperature and curing time conditions. Fractal dimension was applied to describe the complicity of cement. The relationships among compressive strength, fractal dimension, temperature, curing time and pore structure of cement were identified. The results show that curing time of cement directly control the complicity of cement microstructure and compressive strength by altering the pore orientation and macropore ratio in cement. The curing temperature affects the complicity of cement microstructure and compressive strength indirectly by changing the ratio of micropore and small pore. The fractal dimension of silica-enhanced cement shows good correlation with compressive strength. Pore size distribution is the most important factor that influence the complicity of cement matrix and compressive strength of silica-enhanced cement. When building up the macroscopic mechanical performance model of cement, we should consider the influence of pore size distribution in cement under different curing temperatures and times on the complicity of cement microstructure. </span></p>

Excess 210Pb, 137C, total organic carbon content, HBI biomarkers (IPSO25, HBI III) and biogenic silica of marine deposits from sediment core 2018_R2_2F from Sheldon Cove, Antarctic Peninsula

<p><strong>Description</strong>: Sediment core 2018_R2_2F was collected from Sheldon Cove, Antarctic Peninsula (67.55&deg;S 68.27&deg;W) from a water depth of 177 m, in December 2018 as part of expedition JR18003 by the British Antarctic Survey aboard RV James Clark Ross (Sands et al. 2019). Total core length was 25 cm. The dataset presented here consists of: gamma spectrometry measurements of excess 210Pb (calculated as a difference between the total 210Pb and the average of 214Pb and 214Bi) and 137Cs; total organic carbon (TOC) content; biogenic silica (BSi) content; and HBI biomarker (IPSO25, HBI III) concentrations. The excess 210Pb and 137Cs were measured at the Institute of Geology at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, Poland, using a gamma detector Canberra BE3830, cooled with cryostat Cryo-Pulse&reg;5 plus. The detector is placed in 10 cm thick lead shield walls and is equipped with a remote detector chamber option (RDC-6 inches) for low energy background reduction. The detector was commercially characterized by ISOCS (In-Situ Object Calibration Software) and LabSOCS (Laboratory Sourceless Object Calibration Software). Efficiencies for measured geometries were determined using LabSOCS code applying all corrections for sample geometry, matrix, and container type, and were verified with IAEA standards measurements. The results (spectra) were analyzed in Canberra GENIE-2000 v. 3.3 gamma spectrometry software and are presented with 2-sigma uncertainty ranges (Szczuciński, submitted). TOC concentrations (given in %) were measured at the Faculty of Earth Sciences, University of Silesia, Poland, using an Eltra CS-500 IRanalyzer with a Total Inorganic Carbon module according to the procedure described in Racka et al. (2010). TOC was calculated as the difference between TC (total carbon) and TIC (total inorganic carbon). Each TOC sample was analysed in duplicate. Analytical precision and accuracy were better than &plusmn;2% for TC and &plusmn;3% for TIC. HBI biomarker preparation and analysis followed slightly modified (Pieńkowski et al. 2021) standard protocols (Belt 2012). HBI concentrations are given per weight of sediment (ng/g sed), and organic carbon content (&mu;g/g OC) (Belt et al. 2012). Biogenic (opaline) silica (BSi) analysis on dried, homogenised samples followed Heiri et al. (2001) and Bechtel et al. (2007). Each BSi and TOC sample was analysed in duplicate; values are given in %.
