High-resolution (100 m) urban land surface dataset for the Hong Kong-Shenzhen area
<p>In recent years, with rapidly developing computational capabilities, high-resolution techniques have been continuously employed in the atmospheric models. Thus, researchers become capable of applying these high-resolution models to produce detailed meteorological scenarios, which empowers studies of urban-scale climatology which requires finer grid spacing. WRF ARW/Noah LSM/UCM model is often used in urban climate researches. However, the default input land surface data in urban areas is not enough precise, especially for the data describing in China. In this study, we developed a series of methods to produce the high-resolution urban land surface dataset which includes the land cover, vegetation coverage, urban morphology, artificial impervious area and anthropogenic heat data in Hong Kong-Shenzhen area. Moreover, a sensitivity test was conducted to examine the influence of urban land surface data accuracy on urban climate modeling quality. In short, the article proposes the methodological framework for producing the urban land surface dataset and presents how the urban land surface accuracy affects urban climate modeling quality.</p>
METHODS. Bovine ilia were used in the simulations because their histological structure (a fibrolamellar cortex overlying cancellous bone26) was found to match that of the Triceratops ilium. Bone sections 10 x 50 x 縠 3.0 cm with cortices ranging from 0.5 to 5.5 mm in depth (the range of initial cortical-thickness estimates based on gross morphology) were mounted on a servohydraulic mechanical loading frame (MTS Bionix, Minneapolis) and penetrated with an aluminium-bronze T. rex tooth replica. The replica was cast from an actual adult T. rex maxillary tooth, after casts made from some ofthe deeper bite marks revealed the size and shape of the teeth that had impacted the pelvis8 • The replica was penetrated into the ilia sections at 1 mm s-1 to a depth of 11.5 mm, equivalent to the maximum depth of the deepest ilium bite mark8 • Forces were measured with an MTS 25 N strain-gauge-based axial load cell accurate to 0.2%. The forces increased with increasing penetration depth even after the cortical layer had been perforated and the underlying cancellous bone was being crushed. Data from: Photocatalytic Inactivation of E. coli under UV Light Irradiation using Large Surface Area Anatase TiO2 Quantum Dots
In this study, high specific surface area of anatase TiO2 quantum dots were successfully synthesized through a novel one-step microwave-hydrothermal method in rapid synthesis time (20 min) without further heat treatment. XRD analysis and HR-TEM images showed that the as-prepared TiO2 quantum dots of ~2 nm size have high crystallinity with anatase phase. Optical properties showed that the energy band-gap (Eg) of as-prepared TiO2 quantum dots was 3.60 eV, which is higher than the standard TiO2 bandgap, which might be due to the quantum size effect. Raman studies showed shifting and broadening of the peaks of TiO2 quantum dots due to the reducing of the crystallite size. The obtained BET specific surface area (381 m2/g) of TiO2 quantum dots is greater compared to the surface area (181 m2/g) of commercial TiO2 nanoparticles. The photocatalytic activities of TiO2 quantum dots were conducted by the inactivation of E. coli under ultraviolet light irradiation and compared with commercially available anatase TiO2 nanoparticles. The photocatalytic inactivation ability of E. coli was estimated to be 91% at 60 μg/ml for TiO2 quantum dots, which is superior to the commercial TiO2 nanoparticles. Hence, the present study provides new insight into the rapid synthesis of TiO2 quantum dots without any annealing treatment to increase the absorbance of ultraviolet light for superior photocatalytic inactivation ability of E. coli.
Data from: General models for the spectra of surface area scaling strategies of cells and organisms: fractality, geometric dissimilitude, and internalization
Surface areas and volumes of biological systems—from molecules to organelles, cells, and organisms—affect their biological rates and kinetics. Therefore, surface-area-to-volume ratios and the scaling of surface area with volume profoundly influences ecology, physiology, and evolution. The zeroth-order geometric expectation is that surface area scales with body mass or volume as a power law with an exponent of two-thirds, with consequences for surface-area-to-volume (SA:V) ratios and constraints on size; however, organisms have adaptations for altering the surface area scaling and SA:V ratios of their bodies and structures. The strategies fall into three groups: (i) fractal-like surface convolutions and crinkles; (ii) classic geometric dissimilitude through elongating, flattening, fattening, and hollowing; and (iii) internalization of surfaces. Here I develop general quantitative theory to model the spectra of effects of these strategies on SA:V ratios and surface area scaling, from exponents of less than two-thirds to superlinear scaling and mixed-power laws. Applying the theory to cells helps quantitatively evaluate the effects of membrane fractality, shape-shifting, vacuoles, vesicles, and mitochondria on surface area scaling, informing understanding of cell allometry, morphology, and evolution. Analysis of compiled data indicates that through hollowness and surface internalization eukaryotic phytoplankton increase their effective surface area scaling, attaining near-linear scaling in larger cells. This unifying theory highlights the fundamental role of biological surfaces in metabolism and morphological evolution.

Nano- and Microplastic Particle Lengths and Surface Areas, analyzed with Epifluorescence microscopy, collected aboard two student cruises, SKrillEx I (July 2014) and SKrillEx II (June 2015).
Surface seawater was collected in stainless steel buckets aboard two student cruises, SKrillEx I (July 2014) and SKrillEx II (June 2015). Surface seawater samples were filtered on to 5-µm pore polycarbonate filters, and frozen at sea for later analysis. Once back on land, the frozen transparent polycarbonate (PC) filters were filtered on an all-glass apparatus and then imaged with modified epifluorescence microscopy techniques for microplastic particles. All microplastic particles were analyzed for plastic shape, length, surface area, and fluorescence.
