Data from: Building functional and sustainable pharmacovigilance systems - an analysis of pharmacovigilance development across high-, middle- and low-income countries

<p>Background</p> <p>Pharmacovigilance (PV) is an essential component of health systems. Functional PV systems protect and promote public health by supporting the safe and effective use of medicinal products through the prevention and mitigation of harm. With increased simultaneous introduction of innovative products in high-, middle- and low-income countries, e.g., COVID-19 vaccines, or solely in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC), e.g., malaria vaccines, PV systems in LMIC must be able to detect safety signals and ensure adequate safety surveillance. This research aims to analyse the development of PV systems across high-, middle- and low-income countries and to carve out essential elements for implementing functional and sustainable PV systems in LMIC.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A convergent parallel mixed-methods design, consisting of qualitative and quantitative methods was used. Qualitative research consisted of semi-structured interviews. To expand the breadth and range of the study, a quantitative survey was conducted, focusing on the same thematic questions as the semi-structured interviews.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Twelve key informants from nine countries were interviewed and 52 respondents from 36 countries completed an online questionnaire. Four major themes consisting of 12 categories emerged from the data. Based on these, the following elements essential for building functional and sustainable pharmacovigilance systems in LMIC were identified: understanding the drivers of PV development; adequately resolving core system challenges; implementing an efficient organisational structure and procedures for PV; investing in activities beyond reporting of adverse drug reactions; identifying alternate sources of financing; having a national strategy with a vision and mission for PV; adequately leveraging the health system; and effectively integrating the pharmaceutical sector in the national PV system.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Findings from this research revealed progress in PV systems in LMIC in the last decade, though significant efforts are still needed to develop these systems to meet global standards. Developing the different areas emerging from this research, which necessitates implementing functional PV structures and processes, adequately leveraging the health system and effectively engaging the pharmaceutical sector, through the mechanisms proposed, would enable a comprehensive progression from basic to stable, functional and thus sustainable PV systems in LMIC.</p>

Analysis of the root diameter distribution from time series images of real and simulated Cassava root systems

<p>The data was collected, simulated and analyzed in the framework of the CassavaStore project (a collaboration between IBG-2, Forschungszentrum J&uuml;lich, Germany and different institution from Thailand; for details see <a href="https://www.international-bioeconomy.org/cassavastore_eng">https://www.international-bioeconomy.org/cassavastore_eng</a>). Aim of this project is to get a better understanding of storage root development in cassava (<em>Manihot esculenta</em> Crantz) in order to optimize cassava growth with respect to variety breeding and growth management. The storage root is one of the main providers of starch in Thailand and therefore of high economic importance. Monitoring the formation of storage roots over time via quantification of the root diameter distribution of excavated root systems was one of the key aspects addressed in this project. To measure the diameters a software was developed that identifies roots in RGB images and analyzes the diameters along each identified root automatically. The published data contains 1) analyzed images from cassava roots that were acquired in a video box; 2) simulated virtual root model images with known root diameter distributions that were used to validate the analysis approach; 3) a description of the data and the folder structure.</p>

Data from: Computed tomographic analysis of dental system of three Jurassic ceratopsians: implications for the evolution of the tooth replacement pattern and diet in early-diverging ceratopsians

<p><span>T</span><span>he </span><span>dental system of ceratops</span><span>ids is among the most specialized structure in Dinosauria</span><span>, and includes high angled wear surfaces, split tooth roots, and multiple teeth in each tooth family. However, the early evolution of this unique dental system is generally poorly understood due to a lack of knowledge of the dental morphology and development in early-diverging ceratopsians.</span><span> Here we study the dental system of </span><span>three</span><span> of the earliest-diverging Chinese ceratopsians</span><span>: </span><em><span>Yinlong</span></em><span> and <em>Hualianceratops</em> from the early Late Jurassic of Xinjiang</span><span>,</span><span> and <em>Chaoyangsaurus</em> from the Late Jurassic of Liaoning. By using micro-computed tomographic analyses, our study has revealed significant new information regarding the dental system of these early ceratopsians, including </span><span>no</span><span> more than five replacement teeth in each jaw quadrant; at most one generation of replacement teeth in each alveolus; nearly full resorption of the functional tooth root during tooth replacement; and occlusion with low-angled, concave wear facets that differs significantly from the shearing occlusal system seen in ceratopsids. <em>Yinlong</em> displays an increase in the number of maxillary tooth alveoli and a decrease in the number of replacement teeth during ontogeny as well as the retention of remnants of functional teeth in the largest individual.</span> <span>Early-diverging ceratopsians thus display a relatively slow tooth replacement rate compared to late-diverging ceratopsians.</span> <span>Combined with paleobotany and palaeoenvironment data, <em>Yinlong</em> likely uses gastroliths to triturate foodstuffs, and t</span><span>he difference in diet strategy might have influenced the pattern of tooth replacement in later-diverging ceratopsians.</span></p>

A global analysis of aerial displays in passerines revealed an effect of habitat, mating system and migratory traits

<p><span>Aerial displaying is a flamboyant part of the sexual behaviour of several volant animal groups, including birds. Nevertheless, little attention has been focused on identifying correlates of large-scale diversity in this trait. In this study, we scored the presence and absence of aerial displays in males of 1,732 species of passerine birds (Passeriformes) and employed Bayesian phylogenetically informed mixed models to test for associations between aerial displays and a set of life-history and environmental predictors. Our multivariate models revealed that species with males that perform aerial displays inhabited open rather than closed (forested) habitats. These species also exhibited higher levels of polygyny, had more elongated wings, migrated over longer distances and bred at higher latitudes. When we included species where the sexual function of displays has not been explicitly described but is likely to occur, we found that aerial displaying was also associated with smaller body size and increased male plumage colouration. Our results suggest that both sexual selection and natural selection have been important sources of selection on aerial displays in passerines.</span></p>

<p>This study provides a macro-level societal and health system focused analysis of child vaccination rates in 30 European countries, exploring the effect of context on coverage. The importance of demography and health system attributes on health care delivery are recognized in other fields, but generally overlooked in vaccination. The analysis is based on correlating systematic data built up by the Models of Child Health Appraised (MOCHA) Project with data from international sources, so as to exploit a one-off opportunity to set the analysis within an overall integrated study of primary care services for children, and the learning opportunities of the &lsquo;natural European laboratory&rsquo;. The descriptive analysis shows an overall persistent variation of coverage across vaccines with no specific vaccination having a low rate in all the EU and EEA countries. However, contrasting with this, variation between total uptake per vaccine across Europe suggests that the challenge of low rates is related to country contexts of either policy, delivery, or public perceptions. Econometric analysis aiming to explore whether some population, policy and/or health system characteristics may influence vaccination uptake provides important results - GDP per capita and the level of the population&rsquo;s higher education engagement are positively linked with higher vaccination coverage, whereas mandatory vaccination policy is related to lower uptake rates. The health system characteristics that have a significant positive effect are a cohesive management structure; a high nurse/doctor ratio; and use of practical care delivery reinforcements such as the home-based record and the presence of child components of e‑health strategies.</p>

Interactive effects of arrival date, territory quality and male polyterritorial behaviour on the mating system of the sedge warbler Acrocephalus schoenobaenus – a path analysis

<p>Classical models predict that male fitness is based on resources monopolized and invested in reproduction, and/or on individual quality providing offspring with sexually attractive traits or viable genes. However, these factors are frequently correlated, making their relative influence on male fitness difficult to describe and quantify. We analysed the relative influence of the main features of the sedge warbler's (<em>Acrocephalus schoenobaenus</em>) breeding system, i.e. age, arrival date, territory quality, male sexual activity (song and polyterritorial behaviour), on males' mating success, fledging success and local recruitment. Results show that this species' breeding system involves three main paths: (1) earlier-arriving males have higher mating success, regardless of territory quality, (2) the quality of territories pre-empted by earlier males directly influences recruitment, and (3) mating success is influenced by male sexual activity (polyterritorial behaviour), but an additional territory also affects recruitment directly. As arrival date plays a significant role in all the paths, the whole system seems to depend on male quality; although the benefits accruing to male fitness are obtained not only through sexual selection but also through resource monopolization.</p>

Transient Nuclear Criticality Excursion Analysis of Highly Dispersed Particulate Three-Phase Fluidised Systems

<p>The aim of this study was to perform sensitivity analysis, investigating how different fluidisation and sedimentation characteristics of three-phase, wetted UO2 powder beds, may affect a transient nuclear criticality excursion initiated through the addition of water into a fissile powder bed. This type of postulated nuclear criticality accident scenario may occur in nuclear fuel fabrication facilities when a fire is fought through the use of water, supplied via an automatic or manual fire-suppression system. A similar scenario may also develop as a result of water leaks or flooding of the process area housing UO2 powder. The article introduces a model for gas-bubble induced fluidisation of a UO2 powder bed and examines how this phenomenon may affect the neutron kinetic response of a three-phase fluidised fissile powder system. Empirical analysis has shown that fissile suspensions form agglomerated structures when suspended in water, at agglomerate sizes that range from 18 &micro;m to 40 &micro;m. Simulation results indicate that both the critical gas velocity and rate of fluidisation may significantly affect transient nuclear criticality excursion dynamics. The re-distribution of fissile mass into a highly dispersed suspension generally reduces the reactivity of the system, however, depending on the H/U ratio, a positive reactivity may be added to the system. Low P&eacute;clet numbers in the suspension suggest that gas-bubble induced motion of the suspension causes a highly dispersive flow field. An oscillatory power response is predicted for low critical gas velocities where the reactivity of the system is predominantly governed by the re-distribution of fissile mass within the system. The frequency of these oscillations is greater for a higher hindered settling rate of powder particles. At higher critical gas velocity, the transient nuclear criticality excursion is governed by&nbsp;the voidage reactivity feedback, making the response quite independent of fluidisation. In all cases, large volumes of UO2 powder may leave the domain due to overflowing of the suspension. Transient nuclear criticality excursions in UO2 powder beds with a low critical gas velocity are terminated once the bed becomes fully saturated.</p>

Soil carbon maintained by perennial grasslands but lost in field crop systems over 30 years in a temperate Mollisol according to longitudinal, compaction-corrected, full-soil profile analysis

<p>To mitigate climate change, some seek to store carbon from the atmosphere in agricultural soils. However, our understanding of how agriculture affects soil organic carbon (SOC) is muddied by studies 1) lacking longitudinal data, 2) ignoring bulk density changes, or 3) sampling only surface soils. To better understand SOC trends, here we measured changes over 30 years in density-corrected, full-soil-depth (90 cm) SOC stocks under 6 cropping systems and a restored prairie in a Mollisol of southern Wisconsin, USA. Cash-grain systems and alfalfa-based systems lost SOC. Prairie and rotationally-grazed pasture maintained SOC. Average SOC losses for cash-grain and alfalfa-based systems were -0.82 (±0.12) and -0.64 (±0.17) Mg C ha<sup>-1</sup> yr<sup>-1</sup>, respectively. Sensitivity analysis showed that incomplete methodologies overestimated SOC improvements. Our findings using more comprehensive methods demonstrate the inadequacy of row-crop systems and the need for well-managed grasslands to protect SOC in productive agricultural soils of the Upper Midwest USA.</p>

The application of a mode of double preconcentration and double stripping steps in combination with a flow system to decrease the detection limit and increase the selectivity of determinations in stripping analysis of As(III)

<p><span>Due to the fact that arsenic </span><span>has very harmful and toxic effects on living organisms </span><span>monitoring of its content in various environmental samples </span><span>at trace level concentrations</span><span> </span><span>is desirable and highly recommended. Such advantages as low cost and portable instrumentation, achieving low detection limits and most of all the possibility of the direct determination of As(III) with no separation step make stripping voltammetry suitable for the determination of arsenic.</span><span>&nbsp;</span><span>&nbsp;<br></span></p> <p><span>These data concer the application of double deposition and double stripping steps mode in combination with a flow system for anodic stripping voltammetric determination of As(III) ions. An advantage of the proposed way of the voltammetric measurements is a decrease of the detection limit as compared to the values obtained using a traditional three-electrode system thanks to an initial preconcentration of the analyte on the first working electrode as well as the significant increase in a selectivity of As(III) determination thanks to the possibility of solution exchange after the first deposition step.</span></p> <p><span><span>The proposed way of the voltammetric measurements leads to the following analytical advantages: (i) a decrease of the detection limit as compared to the values obtained using traditional three-electrode system by an initial preconcentration of the analyte using the large-surface area electrode; (ii) an increase of the selectivity of voltammetric determinations thanks to the application of a flow system and exchange the solution after the first deposition step; (iii) simplification of performing the measurements in comparison to the original version of double accumulation and stripping steps mode due to the lack of a need to change the position of the first working electrode; (iv) the possibility of analysis of samples with a complex matrix thanks to the use of a flow system leading to minimization of matrix effects in the second deposition step. The developed procedure of As(III) determination offers a wide linear dynamic range in the range from 1 &times; 10<sup>-9</sup> to 5 &times; 10<sup>-8</sup> mol L<sup>-1</sup> at a deposition time of 120 s at both working electrodes. The detection limit for As(III) determination was 4.8 &times; 10<sup>-10</sup> mol L<sup>-1</sup>. The undoubted advantage of the described procedure is its high selectivity. The tolerable limit of excess of Cu(II), which is the main interferent in the course of anodic stripping voltammetric As(III) determination, was significantly increased thanks to the solution exchange after the first deposition step. The correctness of the proposed procedure was confirmed by analysis of a real water sample and lake water certified reference material by obtaining satisfactory recovery values. The additional advantage of the proposed procedure is a miniaturization of the measurement system and the use of environmentally friendly electrodes.</span></span></p>
