Home and hub: pet trade and traditional medicine impact reptile populations in source locations and destinations
<p>The pet trade and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) consumption are major drivers of global biodiversity loss. Tokay geckos (<em>Gekko gecko</em>) are among the most traded reptile species worldwide. In Hong Kong, pet and TCM markets sell tokay geckos while wild populations also persist. To clarify connections between trade sources and destinations, we compared genetics and stable isotopes of wild tokays in local and nonlocal populations to dried individuals from TCM markets across Hong Kong. We found that TCM tokays are likely not of local origin. Most wild tokays were related to individuals in South China, indicating a probable natural origin. However, two populations contained individuals more similar to distant populations, indicating pet trade origins. Our results highlight the complexity of wildlife trade impacts within trade hubs. Such trade dynamics complicate local legal regulation when endangered species are protected, but the same species might also be non-native and possibly damaging to the environment.</p>

Data from: Pleiotropy alleviates the fitness costs associated with resource allocation trade-offs in immune signaling networks
<p>Many genes and signaling pathways within plant and animal taxa drive the expression of multiple organismal traits. This form of genetic pleiotropy instigates trade-offs among life-history traits if a mutation in the pleiotropic gene improves the fitness contribution of one trait at the expense of another. Whether or not pleiotropy gives rise to conflict among traits, however, likely depends on the resource costs and timing of trait deployment during organismal development. To investigate factors that could influence the evolutionary maintenance of pleiotropy in gene networks, we developed an agent-based model of co-evolution between parasites and hosts. Hosts comprise signaling networks that must faithfully complete a developmental program while also defending against parasites, and trait signaling networks could be independent or share a pleiotropic component as they evolved to improve host fitness. We found that hosts with independent developmental and immune networks were significantly more fit than hosts with pleiotropic networks when traits were deployed asynchronously during development. When host genotypes directly competed against each other, however, pleiotropic hosts were victorious regardless of trait synchrony because the pleiotropic networks were more robust to parasite manipulation, potentially explaining the abundance of pleiotropy in immune systems despite its contribution to life history trade-offs.</p>
Enmeshed with a Sand. History of the Slave Trade in Eastern Africa on Indian Ocean
<p>The short documentary “Enmeshed with a Sand. History of the Slave Trade in Eastern Africa on the Indian Ocean”, directed by Aleksandra Lukaszewicz, with interviews recorded by Grzegorz Skorny is the artistic result of the research conducted within TPAAE and CAPHE EU-funded research project.</p> <p>Lukaszewicz and Skorny followed Kaviha Charro Chengo to the far end of Kilifi Creek to set off for the journey of uncovering the traces and narratives of the slave trade in the coastal region of Kenya.</p> <p>Creeks on the Eastern African coast provided an important venue for getting the slaves because, with a high tide, it was possible to get deep into the land. In such activities usually participated apart of few Arabs, middlemen who better understood the environment around them and protected themselves in such a way from becoming slaves themselves.</p> <p>The live memory narratives from the paths leading from Mtzanganyuiko, Kibokoni, Mnarani, Takaungu, Vuma Cliffs, Jumba la Mtwana, Fort Jesus, Shimoni to Zanzibar which we traced with Skorny and later also with Klaudyna Szymanska, should be supported by the objective scientific research.</p> <p>This was achieved by the expert presentation in the documentary of Dr. Ibrahim Busolo Namunaba and by including archival materials: photographs of museum objects, graphics, and maps of the region, which were contributed to the realization of the documentary by the National Museums of Kenyan in Nairobi and the National Museum in Szczecin. Maps were redrawn and animated by the Miastopracownia – Barbara Nawrocka and Dominika Wilczynska; the soundtrack was contributed by the Polish Society for Aesthetics and Mr. Barissa with students from Kenyatta University. The educational consultancy for the film is owned by Prof. Elzbieta Perzycka and Michal Parchimowicz from the Polish University Abroad in London.</p> <p>Recognition of difficult parts of one’s history brings reconciliation to the old pain and allows to find – according to the words of Mrs. Karembo from Kilfi County, Department of Gender, Culture and Social Services – “a hidden blessing”. Perceiving the slaves’ trade in a broader picture of general historical, social, and economic transformations gives back this story of its owners, to the community.</p>
