Ensembles of climate model parameters of Mars and significance values

Data set containing an ensemble of model parameters for each of the candidate climate models in Table 1 of Izquierdo et al., (2023). These ensembles are stored as Python objects using the Pickle module. Files for each candidate model are named based on the accumulation and lag sub models and the number of steps used in the Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithm. From each Python object, it can be extracted the distribution of accumulation and retreat rates with time following the scripts and notebooks of the repository referenced in the open research section of the paper.

The folders in this repository refer to the ensembles of all candidate models dependent of insolation values (insolation), ensembles of all candidate models dependent on obliquity values (obliquity), and the mean likelihood and Bayes factor of each candidate model (bayesFactor).

Restoration and replication: a case study on the value of computational reproducibility assessment

Open science is vital to the interdisciplinary field of ecology due to its integrative nature and use of longitudinal datasets that build upon earlier data collections. To highlight the importance of open science in the rapidly growing discipline of restoration ecology, we conducted a 'computational reproducibility' assessment of a publication on a mining restoration program spanning several decades and over 250 km2 in a global biodiversity hotspot. Open data and code provided alongside the original publication were assessed for consistency with the results and conclusions of the original publication, as were potential limitations in findings due to the methodology. The impacts of inconsistencies and limitations were qualitatively assessed against the key findings from the publication and data were re-analysed where impacts were potentially significant. Of the six inconsistencies and limitations identified, two had a significant impact on five of the 11 key findings of the original publication, and one new key finding was made. The impact of this is of high ecological significance as the findings related to key restoration parameters: species richness (similarity of species richness between forest and 25-year-old restoration), functional diversity (correlation of species richness and functional diversity), and the restoration trajectory (long term trends and restored areas' resilience to disturbance). These outcomes highlight the importance of open data and the value of detailed third-party data reviews, particularly in restoration ecology which relies on research findings to inform decision-making and policy and drive adaptive management.

Identifying science-policy consensus regions of high biodiversity value and institutional recognition

We retrieved 63 articles presenting prioritization maps (out of 5137 screened) and grouped these into three separate clusters based on their underlying methodology and input data, using Multivariate Component Analysis and Hierarchical Clustering on Principal Components. By combining these maps, weighted according to their cluster characteristics, we generated a map of scientific-consensus regions with the highest overlap of independently generated biodiversity priorities. We also created a map of policy-consensus, representing regions with the highest potential to attract the interest of the international conservation organization.

Here we made available the raster version of of scientific-consensus regions and the map of policy-consensus.

The maps are two raster of continuos value, from a minimum of 0 to a max which depend on the number of overlapping priority conservation maps

Detailed methods are available from Cimatti et al. (2021) https://doi.org/10.1016/j.gecco.2021.e01938

In the zip folder you can find scientific-consensus of policy-consensus maps with original values and reclassified with percenitles

Estimating Compositions and Nutritional Values of Seed Mixes based on Vision Transformers

The cultivation of seed mixtures for local pastures is a traditional mixed cropping techniques of cereals and legumes for producing at a low production cost, a balanced animal feed in energy and protein in livestock systems. By considerably improving the autonomy and safety of agricultural systems, as well as reducing their impact on the environment, it is a type of crop that responds favorably both to the evolution of the European regulations on the use phyto-sanitary products, and the expectations of consumers who wish to increase their consumption of organic products. However, farmers find it difficult to adopt it because cereals and legumes do not ripen synchronously and the harvested seeds are heterogeneous, making it more difficult to assess their nutritional value. Many efforts therefore remain to be made to acquire and aggregate technical and economical references to evaluate to what extent the cultivation of seed mixtures could positively contribute to secure and reduce costs on herd feeding. The work presented in this paper proposes to evaluate recent deep learning techniques that could be transferred to an online or smartphone application to automatically estimate the nutritive value of harvested seed mixes to help farmers better managing the yield and thus engage them to promote and contribute to better knowledge of this type of cultivation. For this purpose, we have built an original image dataset containing 4,749 images of seed mixes, covering 11 seed varieties, with which we have compared 2 types of deep learning models. Our results highlight the potential of this method, and show that the best performing model is a recent state-of-the-art Vision Transformer pre-trained with self-supervision (BeiT). It allows an estimation of the nutritive value of seed mixtures with a coefficient of determination \(R^2\) Score of 0.91, which demonstrates the interest of this type of approach, for its possible use on a large scale.
