Effects of M-components on needle activity in positive cloud-to-ground lightning flashes

The data supports the manuscript entitled “Effects of M-components on needle activity in positive cloud-to-ground lightning flashes”. The high-speed video data files of the positive cloud-to-ground lightning lighnting (F20064 and F20065) of *.avi can be opened by Photron Camera Control software (Photron Fastcam Viewer) that can be download from this link: https://photron.com/photron-support/

In addition, MATLAB can open the *.mat file (electric field change data), and Microsoft Excel can open the *.xlsx file (Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Lightning Location data (F20064 & F20065).

The data can be used freely for scientific purposes with the appropriate citation.

Video supplement for publication "The impact of mesh size and microphysics scheme on the representation of mid-level clouds in the ICON model in hilly and complex terrain"

This is the video supplement for the manuscript "The impact of mesh size and microphysics scheme on the representation of mid-level clouds in the ICON model in hilly and complex terrain". It includes compiled videos from allsky cameras at two different field sites (CLOUDLAB (hilly terrain, HT) and CROSSINN (complex terrain, CT)) for in total four case studies (named by their dates). For each case study, we compiled a video of the cloud cover from the model for the 1 km and 65 m resolution, both with a one-moment (1M) and two-moment (2M) microphysics scheme.

Equilibrium chemical composition of impact-produced hot cloud during isentropic expansion. The initial temperature T0 is 4000 K, the initial pressure P0 is 5, 20, and 80 bar. Calculations are performed using the EQL program. Abundances of considered species are presented in molar fractions. The elemental composition of impact-produced cloud is taken as a mixture of CI chondrite, mare basalts, and ferroan anorthosite with a ratio of 1:25:25 by mass as in Berezhnoy (2013).

Considered species include ions, neutral gas-phase species, and condensates. Ions are written as ...(+) (for example, Al(+)). Condensates (solids and liquids) are written as ...(c) or ...(c;...). Examples of condensates are Al2O3(c) and Al2O3(c; gamma). For species marked in theirs names as (cr, l) in Gurvich et al. (1989) (for example, Al2O3(cr, l)) it is possible to determine a state of matter (liquid or solid). The content of studied species is 0 if the relative molar fraction is less than 1e-21.

The elemental composition of impact-produced cloud is taken as a mixture of CI chondrite, mare basalts, and ferroan anorthosite with a ratio of 1:25:25 by mass as in Berezhnoy (2013).

Calculations of the equilibrium chemical composition of impact-produced clouds were performed starting from an initial temperature of 4000 K at different initial pressures of 5, 20, and 80 bar, corresponding to entropies equal to 7.2, 5.56, and 4.25 kJ / (kg×K), respectively.

Berezhnoy, A.A., 2013. DYAMOND-II Model Outputs for "Boundary-Layer-Coupled and Decoupled Clouds in Global Storm-Resolving Models: Comparisons with the ARM Observations"

This dataset contains outputs from the DYAMOND Phase-II simulations, focusing on Global Storm-Resolving Models (GSRMs) at various Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) sites. The dataset supports the analysis presented in the manuscript "Boundary-Layer-Coupled and Decoupled Clouds in Global Storm-Resolving Models: Comparisons with the ARM Observations."

Included are high-resolution model outputs from nine GSRMs, detailing simulations of atmospheric processes at six ARM sites, including variables of clouds, temperature, humidity, wind, and surface fluxes. This dataset allows for a direct comparison between GSRM simulations and ARM field observations, facilitating the evaluation of PBL-coupled and decoupled clouds. For further inquiries or assistance regarding the dataset, please contact the corresponding author at su10@llnl.gov.
