Dataset from: An intuitive form of the energy functional for resistive plasma perturbations

<p>The energy functional of ideal magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) is extended to the regime of finite resistivity and transformed to an intuitive form, which separates pressure-gradient, current-density drive and stabilizing phenomena, analogously to the ideal version of the functional derived by Johnson and Greene. The resulting resistive energy functional is not in the form of a solvable eigenvalue problem but is intended to analyze the energetic composition of eigenfunctions which were calculated in advance by solving the MHD equations. The new resistive energy functional provides information on the different energetic drives and stabilizing phenomena of an eigenfunction. The new energy functional has been implemented in the CASTOR3D code in general 3D curvilinear coordinates and successfully validated across three different coordinate systems for a numerical test case.</p>

Nutrient balance and energy-acquisition effectiveness: Do birds adjust their fruit diet to achieve intake targets?

<p>1. According to diet-regulation hypotheses, animals select food to regulate the intake of macronutrients or maximise energy feeding efficiency. Specifically, the nutrient balance model proposes that foraging is primarily a process of balancing multiple nutrients to achieve a nutritional intake target, while the energy maximisation model proposes that foraging aims to maximise energy.</p> <p>2. Here, we evaluate the adjustment of fruit diets (the fruit-derived component of the diets) to nutritional and energy intake targets, characterizing the nutrient balance and energy maximisation strategies across fruit-eating bird species with different fruit-handling behaviours ("gulpers", which swallow whole fruits, and "mashers", which process the fruit in the beak) in subtropical Andean forests. Food-handling behaviour determines the food intake rate and, consequently, influences animal efficiency to obtain nutrients and energy.</p> <p>3. We used extensive field data from the diet of fruit-eating birds to test how species adjust their food intake. We used nutritional geometry to explore macronutrient balance and the effectiveness framework to explore energy-acquisition effectiveness.</p> <p>4. Observed diets showed a good fit with predictions of a diet balanced in macronutrient proportions. With few exceptions, diets clustered near an optimal macronutrient mixture and did not differ from each other in terms of maximising energy intake. Moreover, when comparing our results with a random diet based on local fruit availability, birds tended to fit better to the nutritional target, and less to the energy target, than expected from a random diet. Fruit-handling behaviour did not affect the ability of bird species to reach a nutritional target but it affected species energy acquisition, which was lower in mashers than in gulpers.</p> <p>5. This study explores for the first time different diet-regulation strategies in wild fruit-eating birds, and supports the argument that the diet reflects a specific regulation of macronutrients. Understanding why birds select fruits is a complex question requiring multiple considerations. The nutrient balance model explains the relevance of nutrient composition in the fruit selection by fruit-eating birds, although it is still necessary to determine its relative importance with respect to other dietary drivers.</p>

Prey-driven behavioral habitat use in a low-energy ambush predator

<p>Food acquisition is an important modulator of animal behavior and habitat selection that can affect fitness. Optimal foraging theory predicts that predators should select habitat patches to maximize their foraging success and net energy gain, likely achieved by targeting areas with high prey availability. However, it is debated whether prey availability drives fine-scale habitat selection for predators. We assessed whether an ambush predator, the timber rattlesnake (<i>Crotalus horridus</i>), exhibits optimal foraging site selection based on the spatial distribution and availability of prey. We used passive infrared camera trap detections of potential small mammal prey (<i>Peromyscus</i> spp., <i>Tamias striatus</i>, and <i>Sciurus</i> spp.) to generate variables of prey availability across the study area and used whether a snake was observed in a foraging location or not to model optimal foraging in timber rattlesnakes. Our models of small mammal spatial distributions broadly predicted that prey availability was greatest in mature deciduous forests, but <i>T. striatus</i> and <i>Sciurus</i> spp. exhibited greater spatial heterogeneity compared to <i>Peromyscus</i> spp. We found the spatial distribution of cumulative small mammal encounters (i.e. overall prey availability), rather than the distribution of any one species, to be highly predictive of snake foraging. Timber rattlesnakes appear to forage where the probability of encountering prey is greatest. Our study provides evidence for fine-scale optimal foraging in a low-energy, ambush predator and offers new insights into drivers of snake foraging and habitat selection. </p>

Revisiting the Milky Way — White Hole Binary with Energy Backlash and White Hole Seed Signature

<p>The observation made on Sep 25, 2022 on Harvard-Smithsonian MicroObservatory detected a white hole binary with white hole seed signatures in the collision momentum. A wide area of tree-shaped energy backlash were detected due to the high energy phenomenon with the angular momentum of the observation. The scattering of miniature black holes and miniature white holes was the main composition of the observation data, and contributed to the overall interference patterns in the observational result. The cluster formation in the observation mainly originated from between 948 and 999 Kelvins, and the energy backlash to the lower thermodynamic regime. The resonance signatures on the star systems above ~1360 Kelvins were observed, with lower surface threshold located between 1143 and 1263 Kelvins. The observation is consistent with the observation made on the Ring Nebula M57 on Jun 12, 2022, with silhouettes of the white hole seed and black hole seed collision momentum between 0 and 73.7 Kelvins. The observations confirmed the geodesics of ring singularity of black hole studies to be the collision momenta of black hole and white hole seeds.</p>

Data for: Industrial energy development decouples ungulate migration from the green wave

<p>The ability to freely move across the landscape to track the emergence of nutritious spring green-up (termed "green-wave surfing"), is key to the foraging strategy of migratory ungulates. Across the vast landscapes traversed by many migratory herds, habitats are being altered by development with unknown consequences for surfing. Using a unique long-term tracking dataset, we found that when energy development occurs within mule deer (<em>Odocoileus hemionus</em>) migration corridors, migrating animals become decoupled from the green wave. During the early phases of a coalbed natural gas development, deer synchronized their movements with peak green-up. But faced with increasing disturbance as development expanded, deer altered their movements by holding up at the edge of the gas field and letting the green wave pass them by. Development often modified only a small portion of the migration corridor but had far-reaching effects on behavior before and after migrating deer encountered it, thus reducing surfing along the entire route by 38.65% over the 14-year study period. Our study suggests that industrial development within migratory corridors can change the behavior of migrating ungulates and diminish the benefits of migration. Such disruptions to migratory behavior present a common mechanism whereby corridors become unprofitable and could ultimately be lost on highly developed landscapes.</p>
