ARTS Microwave Single Scattering Properties Database (Oriented Particles)

<p>The database contains microwave and submillimeter wave single scattering data of azimuthally randomly oriented frozen hydrometeors. Main applications lie in polarized active/passive microwave and submillimeter wave remote sensing. This database is an independent add-on to the&nbsp;<a href="https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.1175572">ARTS Microwave Single Scattering Properties Database</a>.</p> <p>A description of the simulation methods and database is available in the following article. Please cite it if you use the database for a publication. Brath, M., Ekelund, R., Eriksson, P., Lemke, O., and Buehler, S. A.: Microwave and submillimeter wave scattering of oriented ice particles, Atmos. Meas. Tech. Discuss., <a href="https://doi.org/10.5194/amt-2019-382">https://doi.org/10.5194/amt-2019-382</a>, in review, 2019.</p> <p>The dataset contains one aggregate habit and one pristine ice crystal habit. Furthermore, 35 frequencies from 1 to 886 GHz, and 3 temperatures, 190, 230 and&nbsp; 270 K, are included. The data were calculated using the discrete dipole approximation method (DDA) in combination with a self developed orientation averaging approach. Interfaces for easy user access is available under a separate upload, due to different licensing, under the title <a href="https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.1175588">ARTS Microwave Single Scattering Properties Database Interfaces</a>, in which only the Python3 interface can be used for browsing and importing of the single scattering data of azimuthally randomly oriented.&nbsp;The archive InputAzimuthallyRandom.tar.gz contains the shape files,&nbsp;which have be used as input for the DDA simulations.</p> <p><strong>Unpacking</strong></p> <p>The data files for the oriented particles follow the same directory structure as the <a href="https://zenodo.org/record/1175573">ARTS Microwave Single Scattering Properties Database</a>. Each tar file contains an SSD directory and the subdirectories for a specific particle orientation. Furthermore, it contains as a quick overview a report of the scattering properties for total random orientation.</p> <p>If the totally randomly oriented particle database is already present, these files should be unpacked in the same location that contains the SSD folder.</p> <p>In Unix, all files can be unpacked with:</p> <pre><code class="language-bash">for ssdfile in SSD-AziRnd-ice*.tar; do tar -xvf $ssdfile done </code></pre>

RIBuild: Material properties for historic building materials and insulation materials

Material properties were collected from all RIBuild partner countries. As these materials were supposed to be included in hygrothermal simulations with DELPHIN performed in RIBuild, a full material characterization was required as described in RIBuild deliverable D2.1 and in the DELPHIN specifications. Synthesis of Bi2S3 thin films based on pulse-plating bismuth nanocrystallines and its photoelectrochemical properties

<p>The solubility of Bi<sup>3+</sup> in aqueous solution is an important factor that limits the fabrication of high quality Bi<sub>2</sub>S<sub>3</sub> thin films. In order to find a low–cost method to manufacture high quality Bi<sub>2</sub>S<sub>3</sub> thin films, we are reporting the preparation of the Bi<sub>2</sub>S<sub>3</sub> thin films based on pulse-plating method in this paper for the first time. The nano-bismuth particles were obtained by electroplating on fluorine doped SnO<sub>2</sub> (FTO) coated conducting glass substrates with saturated bismuth potassium citrate solution as the electroplating bath, and then it was put into a muffle furnace to oxidize. Finally, the thin films depositing on FTO glass substrates were put into the thioacetamide solution for vulcanization. In the end, the Bi<sub>2</sub>S<sub>3</sub> thin films were successfully prepared on FTO glass substrates. Different characterization techniques were used to characterize the structure, morphology and photoelectrochemical properties of the prepared thin films. The test results revealed that we used this method can synthesize the high quality of Bi<sub>2</sub>S<sub>3</sub> thin films, thus the Bi<sub>2</sub>S<sub>3</sub> materials synthesized through this method are promising candidates in photoelectrochemical application.</p>

Riverscape properties contribute to the origin and structure of a hybrid zone in a Neotropical freshwater fish

Understanding the structure of hybrid zones provides valuable insights about species boundaries and speciation, such as the evolution of barriers to gene flow and the strength of selection. In river networks, studying evolutionary processes in hybrid zones can be especially challenging, given the influence of past and current river properties along with biological species-specific traits. Here, we suggest that a natural hybrid zone between two divergent lineages of the sexually dimorphic Neotropical fish Nematocharax venustus was probably established by secondary contact as a result of a river capture event between the Contas and Pardo river basins. This putative river capture is supported by hydrogeological evidence of elbows of capture, wind gaps, and geological faults. The morphological (color pattern) and genetic (mtDNA and RADseq) variation reveal a clinal transition between parental lineages along the main river, with predominance of F2 hybrids at the centre of the hybrid zone, absence of early generation backcrosses, and different levels of hybridization in the tributaries. We highlight that different sources of information are crucial for understanding how the riverscape spatial history influences the connectivity between and within rivers systems and, consequently, the dynamics of gene flow between freshwater lineages/species.

Data and code for "Biomechanical properties of a buzz-pollinated flower"

<p>Approximately half of all bee species use vibrations to remove pollen from plants with diverse floral morphologies. In many buzz-pollinated flowers, these mechanical vibrations generated by bees are transmitted through floral tissues, principally pollen-containing anthers, causing pollen to be ejected from small openings (pores or slits) at the tip of the stamen. Despite the importance of substrate-borne vibrations for both bees and plants, few studies to date have characterised the transmission properties of floral vibrations. In this study, we use contactless laser vibrometry to evaluate the transmission of vibrations in the corolla and anthers of buzz- pollinated flowers of Solanum rostratum, and measured vibrations in three spatial axes. We found that floral vibrations conserve their dominant frequency (300Hz) as they are transmitted throughout the flower. We also found that vibrations are generally amplified (up to &gt;400%) as they travel from the receptacle at the base of the flower to other floral structures, and that anthers vibrate with a higher amplitude velocity than petals. Together, these results suggest that vibrations travel differently through floral structures and across different spatial axes. As pollen release is a function of vibration amplitude, we conjecture that bees might benefit from applying vibrations in the axes associated with higher vibration amplification.</p>

Effect of substitution of Al2O3 and B2O3 for SiO2 on the structural and thermodynamic properties of cover glass for liquid crystal display

By the substitution of Al2O3 and B2O3 for SiO2 of the glass network former, the structural and thermodynamic properties of aluminosilicate glass were investigated. Judged by Raman spectra, the bridging vibration Si-Ob increased with the Al2O3/SiO2 substitute. And the total non-bridging vibration Si-Onb decreased, indicating the enhancement of the structure compactness. While for B2O3/SiO2 substitute, the vibration at around 1010cm-1 and the bridging vibration Si-Ob in Q4 unit both decreased and the structure got loosened. Based on the study of the structure of glass, the thermodynamic properties such as viscosity, coefficient of the linear thermal expansion, high-temperature resistance, strain point, annealing point and softening point, as well as density and elastic modulus were investigated. With the enhancement of thermodynamic properties requirements, the difficulty in industrialized manufacturing was increased. In this paper, glass composition of sample 4 was suitable for floating process production.
