Seasonality Drives Carbon Emissions along a Stream Network

Headwater stream networks contribute a significant amount to the global carbon dioxide terrestrial flux because of high turbulence and coupling with terrestrial environments. Heterogeneity within headwater stream networks, both spatially and temporally, makes measuring and upscaling these emissions challenging because measurements of carbon dioxide in streams are often limited to a few monitoring points. We modified a stream network model to reflect real measurements made under base flow and high flow conditions at Martha Creek in Stabler, WA in the US Pacific Northwest. We found that under high flow conditions, the stream network had much greater total carbon emissions than during low flow conditions (1.22 Mg C day-1 vs. 0.034 Mg C day-1). We attribute this increase to a larger overall stream network area (0.04 km2 vs 0.01 km2) and discharge (1.9 m3/s vs. 0.005 m3/s) in November versus August. Our results demonstrate the need to understand the nonperennial nature of streams when calculating carbon emissions. We compared the stream network emissions with the terrestrial net ecosystem exchange (NEE) estimated by local eddy covariance measurements per area of the watershed (-5.5 Mg C day-1 in August and -2.2 Mg C day-1 in November). Daily stream emissions in November accounted for a much larger percentage of NEE in August (54% vs. 0.62%). We concluded that the stream network can emit a large percentage of the forest NEE in the winter months, and annual estimates of stream network emissions must consider the flow regime throughout the year.

Dataset for: The influence of mixing on seasonal carbon dioxide and methane fluxes in ponds

Inland waters are important sources of the greenhouse gases carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4). Ponds have amongst the highest CO2 and CH4 fluxes of all aquatic ecosystems, yet seasonal variation in fluxes remain poorly characterized, creating challenges for accurately estimating annual emissions. Further, ponds can exhibit a range of mixing regimes, yet the impact of mixing regimes on gas emissions remains unclear. Here, we assessed annual dynamics of CO2 and CH4 in four temperate ponds (Minnesota, USA) that varied in mixing regimes. This dataset includes high frequency temperature data for each pond to asses mixing, and CO2 and CH4 emissions and concentrations taken by-weekly from 2021-2022.

LAGOS-NE Annual, seasonal, and monthly climate data for lakes and watersheds in a 17-state region of the U.S.

These data describe climate at different temporal scales and can easily be integrated into analyses using limnological and geospatial data in the LAGOS-NE database. This includes 1) monthly, seasonal and annual PRISM temperature and precipitation data at the hydrologic unit code-12 (HUC-12) watershed scale, 2) monthly, seasonal and annual Palmer Hydrological Drought Index (PHDI) data for all lakes over 4ha in LAGOS-NE by lagoslakeid (unique lake identifier), and 3) 30-year averages (1981-2010) of monthly, seasonal and annual PRISM temperature and precipitation data at the HUC-12 watershed scale linked to all lakes over 4ha in LAGOS-NE by lagoslakeid.

Survival and growth of south Florida slash pines in four seasonal ponds at Archbold Biological Station, 1992-2001

These data summarize survival and plant size (height, basal diameter) for south Florida slash pine (Pinus elliottii var. densa) in four seasonal ponds at Archbold Biological Station from 1992-2001. Plants were seedlings, saplings, or small trees. The seasonal ponds were favorable for growth (0.1-0.6 m in height per year) and annual survival (usually over 80%) in the absence of fire or major flooding events. Flooding episodes during most of the study ranged from 3-11 months each year. Mortality increased with flooding intensity and decreased with plant size. Growth rates were not affected by flooding. Near the end of the study, two fires killed 72% of these pines (low intensity, prescribed) and 100% of these pines (intense wildfire). The study suggests that most seasonal ponds do not support large south Florida slash pine individuals despite generally favorable conditions, because of periodic flooding and fire.
