Context dependent benefits of aphids for bacteria in the phyllosphere.

Insect herbivores, like aphids, are common on plants yet how they interact with plant microbiomes remains largely unknown. For instance, for the widespread bacterial epiphyte and potential aphid pathogen Pseudomonas syringae, aphids could impact bacterial populations by serving as secondary hosts or by altering the epiphytic habitat through feeding and/or waste secretion. Here we examined if the pea aphid, Acyrthosiphon pisum, could influence epiphytic populations of P. syringae. First, we quantified epiphytic growth ability without aphids and virulence to aphids across 21 diverse P. syringae strains. For eight strains that varied in these traits we then assessed the influence of aphid presence on epiphytic bacterial growth. In some cases, P. syringae benefited significantly from the presence of aphids, with up to 3.8 times more cell doublings. This benefit was not correlated with strain traits, but rather with initial population densities; smaller bacterial populations received relatively more benefit from aphids, and larger populations received less benefit. Honeydew, the sugary waste product of aphids, in the absence of aphids was sufficient to increase P. syringae density on leaves. We conclude that aphid honeydew can sometimes increase P. syringae epiphytic growth, but that the bacteria may not benefit from using aphids as hosts.

Managing Ionising Radiation Risks: The Need for a Broader Context

ICRP is the leading scientific organisation regrouping some of the most recognised RP experts worldwide and has defined for decades the principles and tools to be used by RP professionals. The ICRP has recently embarked on a process to revise its General Recommendations.

The Radiological Protection Working Group (RPWG) of the World Nuclear Association, a forum for RP experts in the field of nuclear energy, acknowledges the need to adapt selected parts of the RP system, but recommends considering any reform in a wider context.

The overarching aim of the radiological protection is the protection of humans, animals, and the environment from any detrimental health effects due to ionising radiation. Over the years however, the RP community started to understand that the harmful effects of ionising radiation should not be considered in isolation of other types of hazard. As such, the “all-hazard approach” was developed to include all the risks considered for a specific scenario, albeit all too often focused on the local scale only, forgetting the potential implications on the global scale. Climate change originating from anthropomorphic activities is one such risk that is already creating upheaval in our society and is on the move to cause a tremendous impact on our planet in the near future, far more than any small improvement in radiation exposure ever will.

The ICRP has the responsibility more than ever to contextualise the realities of our time and to fully understand the potential consequences of any changes or added complexity to our current RP system which may add some small benefits from a health and safety perspective but would penalise nuclear technologies that provide huge benefits to society and an essential tool to reaching carbon neutrality. Consequently, any changes to the current RP system should be subject to a deep impact analysis using a true “all-hazard approach”.

The LNT hypothesis, the need for education especially for members of the public towards the risks associated with low doses, the avoidance of over-conservatism, the changes of the system of dose quantities, are some of the many subjects that will need to be very carefully considered bearing in mind the current challenges.

Overall, the revision of the general recommendations will need to be simple and practical. The RPWG is willing to collaborate with the ICRP to provide industry input on the practicalities of radiological protection as applied in the nuclear industry.

Male meadow vole scent marking 1 rival odor context

Meadow voles (Microtus pennsylvanicus) rely on olfactory communication, such as scent marking, to find and secure mating opportunities during the breeding season. Scent marks, and odors in general, provide information about the donors and persists in the environment for extended periods, allowing a wide audience. Whether a vole responds to another scent mark(s), or odor(s), depends on the social context and the information the odor provides about the donor(s). Therefore, we examined if male scent marking towards a social odor or female meadow voles is influenced by information present or previously encountered based on contextual differences in the social odor. We presented males with two odor associations of a male with a female with contextual differences in the age of the rival. We tested male scent marking with both the odors present, current information, and with the females from the social information, prior information. It was found that rival male age did not affect the scent marking behavior of males towards a social odor or female voles. Rival male age also did not affect preference as males did not show a preference for either female. The lack of an effect may lie in the properties of scent marks and the natural history of meadow voles during the breeding season. The odor of an individual rival may not represent a strong enough competitional threat to influence a signaler's decisions, but the association could still provide the signaler with valuable information about which females are consider high-quality.

Importance of invasion mechanisms varies with abiotic context and plant invader growth form

1. Many invasion hypotheses propose biotic interactions as the main mechanism to explain non-native species' success. Despite the evidence that the strength of biotic interactions varies with abiotic context, it remains unclear whether the importance of the different mechanisms proposed to explain invasion predictably varies with abiotic context and whether this variation is consistent across different growth forms.

2. We reviewed studies at a global scale to evaluate whether evapotranspiration, latitude, precipitation, and temperature influence the importance of disturbance, enemy release, facilitation, and novel weapons mechanisms to explain non-native plant invasions. In total, we calculated 171 effect sizes for ~300 non-native plant species covering a wide range of environmental conditions and growth forms.

3. Environmental context and plant growth form influenced the role played by each invasion mechanism. The importance of disturbance in facilitating invasion exhibited a quadratic relationship with latitude and temperature and decreased with increasing precipitation. In mixed communities and trees, disturbance was mediated by either evapotranspiration, latitude, precipitation, or temperature. Enemy release exhibited a quadratic relationship with evapotranspiration, latitude, and precipitation, and was positively related to temperature. The importance of enemy release was also contingent on growth form and was highly context-dependent, enemy release responses for grasses, and trees were modulated by either evapotranspiration, latitude, precipitation, or temperature. The importance of facilitation decreased with increasing temperature. In forbs, facilitation decreased with evapotranspiration and temperature. The importance of novel weapons was more strongly confirmed for studies conducted at lower evapotranspiration, precipitation, and higher latitudes, and exhibited a quadratic relationship with temperature.

4. Synthesis. Our results show that environmental conditions not only filter non-native species depending on physiological tolerances but may also influence the importance of invasion mechanisms.
