Data from: Trophic position and niche overlap of an Asian weatherfish (Misgurnus bipartitus), western tubenose goby (Proterorhinus semilunaris), and native benthic fish species

The dataset belonging to the paper "Trophic position and niche overlap of an Asian weatherfish (Misgurnus bipartitus), western tubenose goby (Proterorhinus semilunaris), and native benthic fish species" published in Aquatic Invasions (paper in press; doi link will be added later), is provided here. The dataset consists of δ13C and δ15N (‰) stable isotope ratios of taxa of fish, macroinvertebrates, plants, alga, and soil. If applicable, the length of the taxon was included. Below, methodological information is provided on the study site, the sampling process, the sampling preparation, and the stable isotope analysis. For references, see the published paper in Aquatic Invasions.

Study site

The study site concerned a section of the lowland brook Tungelroysebeek (51°14.38'N, 005°52.086'E – 51°14.26'N, 005°47.77'E) near the village Tungelroy in the Province of Limburg, the Netherlands. This brook of 35 km length has several tributaries before discharging into the River Meuse. Over most of its course, the brook was meandering and had a well-developed riparian and hydrophyte vegetation. During sampling the mean water temperature was 16.0 °C, conductivity 664 µS/cm, pH 7.3, water velocity 0.2 m/s, depth 70 cm, and Secchi depth 60 cm. The brook width ranged between 5-8 m and its bed substrate predominantly consisted of sand.

Sampling

Samples of fish, macroinvertebrates, macrophytes, dead organic material, and bottom soil substrate were collected in October 2019. The samples were collected in the stretch of the brook that is denoted in Fig. 1 of the paper. Fish were caught using handheld electrofishing equipment (Bretschneider EFGI 650). After catching, the fish were euthanized using a neutralized benzocaine solution of 100 mg l-1. Macroinvertebrates were collected using 70x55 cm dip nets with a mesh size of 1 mm. Helophytes, floating-leaved, and submerged aquatic macrophytes were collected by hand. Soil samples were collected by means of a hollow soil sampling tube with a diameter of 5 cm. A Nikon SMZ800 stereo microscope with a 10-63 magnification was used for the identification of small macroinvertebrates.

Sample preparation

All samples were transported to the laboratory and stored separately at -18° C until preparation. To obtain muscle samples a piece of 0.5-1 cm of the dorsal tissue of each fish was dissected. Muscle tissue samples were dissected from fish, crayfish, and unionid mussels. Other macroinvertebrates were stored alive for two days at 5 °C to empty their intestinal contents. Subsequently, these invertebrates were rinsed with tap water and then with demineralized water before processing. From unionid mussels, muscle tissue of a similar size was dissected. Of small mollusks, all soft body tissues were used. For small mollusks and other macroinvertebrates, individuals of the same species were pooled to obtain enough material (0.22-0.26 mg) for analyses. For crayfish, muscle tissue of the abdomen was used while the intestine was removed. The stems, leaves, and roots of individual plants were pooled.

After preparation, all samples were stored at -80 °C until freeze drying. Freeze drying was carried out at -90 °C for 24-48 hours for fish and macroinvertebrate samples. Plant, dead organic material, and soil samples were freeze dried at least 48 hours. After freeze drying, the samples were grounded with aluminum balls, for 2 min at 30 rpm, using a Retsch MM 400. Subsequently, the grounded samples were weighted in tin cups (Elemental Microanalysis 8 x 5 mm) and prepared for isotope analyses. For the fish and invertebrate samples, 0.22-0.26 mg was weighted. For plants and soil, separate samples were weighted for carbon (10 mg) and nitrogen (40 mg) analyzes.

Stable isotope analyses

Carbon and nitrogen stable isotopes were measured using a Thermo Scientific FLASH 2000 HT Elemental Analyzer with a Thermo Scientific DELTA V Advantage Next Generation Isotope Ratio mass spectrometer. Reference gasses were calibrated with the IAEA standards (IAEA-N-2 and IAEA-CH-6), with a maximum deviation of 0.15‰. As an internal standard control, caffeine was used and the 13C/12C and 15N/14N of every sample were determined (in ‰). The isotope ratios (R) δ13C and δ15N are relative to Vienna PDB and atmospheric N2 and were calculated by:

δ13C or δ15N = (Rsample/Rstandard − 1) * 1000

Abstract

Co-occurring and morphologically similar species have adapted to differential niches for minimizing competition. An invasive alien species can occupy an 'empty niche' in introduced ranges. Alternatively, the invader may occupy an overlapping niche and compete with native species to a certain degree. In a Western European lowland brook with high nutrient loads, we studied a benthic community of five fish species, including two alien species: an Asian weatherfish (Misgurnus bipartitus) and the western tubenose goby (Proterorhinus semilunaris). The native species concerned stone loach (Barbatula barbatula), spined loach (Cobitis taenia), and gudgeon (Gobio gobio). Because of the unknown effects of the invaders on native benthic fish species, the trophic position, isotopic niche overlap, and potential food competition among these species were identified using nitrogen and carbon stable isotopes. The trophic levels of the five fish species indicated that they are secondary consumers. Body size of native fish species correlated significantly negative with their δ15N (‰) signature, in contrast with the invaders indicating that the latter are generalists. Significant isotopic niche overlap was observed among all benthic species. The degree of niche overlap of M. bipartitus was the highest (91.8%) with the G. gobio. Proterorhinus semilunaris had the highest degree of niche overlap (91.2%) with the (B. barbatula. It was notable that the observed niche overlap between the native B. barbatula and C. taenia was high (99.2%). Overlap between M. bipartitus and P. semilunaris was low (8.9% overlap), indicating little resource competition between these alien species. Native species showed wider isotopic niches than the invaders. Bayesian mixing models revealed that native and alien species slightly differ in their main diet. The results suggest that the invaders are plastic in their resource use, leading to niche differentiation and promoting co-existence of benthic fish species.

Dataset: Thermal noise calibration of functionalized cantilevers for force microscopy: effects of the colloidal probe position.

Dataset for article "Thermal noise calibration of functionalized cantilevers for force microscopy: effects of the colloidal probe position"

The raw data is in the 6 zip files (AIO*.zip), which contains thermal noise spectra measured on the raw cantilevers close to the free end (folders AIO#, where #=1, 2 or 3 for samples A, B or C), or on the loaded cantilever at various positions along its length (folders AIO#-ScanHF, where #=1, 2 or 3 for samples A, B or C). The file format is Matlab data file (.mat), it include the vectors f (for frequency axis, in Hz) and p (power spectrum density, in m^2/Hz). Other variables are erreur (some internal check that the calibration of the interferometer is pertinent) and PointW (mean intensity collected by the interferometer, and mean contrast on the 2 quadrature signals). For the loaded cantilever, we also record the laser spot position (XFaisceau and YFaisceau, in µm, origin close to the free end on the cantilever), some timing information to track for drifts, and ellipse (a calibration step of the quadrature phase interferometer).

The SEM images of the samples are included in the zip file SEMimages.zip

All analysis scripts (Matlab .m files) are included:

AnalyseAll.m reads the raw data files and extract all the pertinent information, saving it to file AnalyseAll.mat

Analysis_cp analyses the pre-processed data with the single contact point model

Analysis_endload analyses the pre-processed data with the rigid end load model

figspectrum.m creates Fig. 4 of the article

plot_cp_endload.m creates Fig. 5 and 6 of the article

All other scripts (.m) are dependencies that are necessary for the 3 former scripts to run. All scripts are commented and should be self explanatory. Of interest are the scripts mode_shape_cp.m and mode_shape_endload.m, which compute the resonant mode shape of a loaded cantilever for the two models, when given the parameters on the load size and position.

Genotypes and geographic positions of 5797 European white oaks from 636 locations genotyped at 355 nuclear SNPs and 28 maternally inherited SNPs of the chloroplast and mitochondria

The data set is the result of genetic inventory on 5797 white oaks collected at 636 locations all over Europe. The oaks trees were assigned in forest inventories as Quercus robur L. (3342), Quercus petraea Matt. (2090), Quercus pubescens Willd. (170) or as unspecified Quercus. spp. (195). The sampling had a focus on central and east Europe as well as the Black Sea and Caucasus region. All individuals were genotyped at 355 nuclear SNPs and 28 maternally inherited SNPs of the chloroplast and mitochondria. The combination of the maternally inherited SNPs resulted in 26 different haplotypes.

The genotype of each individual is one row in the csv-file "genotypes". The genotypes at the nuclear markers are diploid and represented by two columns per gene marker. The genetic information at the organelle genome is haploid. For each of these gene markers one column is used. Genotypes are coded by Arabic numbers. The meaning of the numbers is explained in the table "coding genotypes" in a second csv-file. Each Individual has a unique "Genotype_ID" and a "Thuenen_Sample_ID". The "Thuenen_Sample_ID" is a unique ID that serves to identify the sample in our depository at the Thuenen Institute of Forest Genetics. Each individual has data on the geographic origin given as "Longitude" and "Latitude" in decimal degrees. For each individual the putative oak species ("Putative species") as it has been assigned in the forest inventories is given. The numbers of the "Haplotype" represent the multilocus combination of the mitochondrial and chloroplast SNPs of that individual.

Effect of the red uniform on the judgment of position or movement used in Wushu Routine, evaluated by practitioners of the modality

Experiment 1 design was adopted a 2 (Color: red, blue) x 2 (Gender: male, female) ANOVA. 144 Participants were randomly assigned to four groups based on uniform color (red vs. blue) and practitioners' gender (male vs. female) in a 2 x 2 between-subject design according to the method of random number table. There were 36 male athletes and 36 female athletes in the red uniform group, and 36 male athletes and 36 female athletes in the blue uniform group. Experiment 2 used within-subjects design to conducted experiment separately for the blue and red groups. The female practitioners were randomly assigned to two groups according to the method of random number table and made ratings of the athletes once during the ovulation phase and once during the non-ovulation phase. The order in which the tasks were completed was balanced between subjects: Half of the females in the blue group were tested first during ovulation and then during non-ovulation; the other half were tested first during non-ovulation and then during ovulation. The red group did the same arrangement. They were instructed to look at each photograph for 5s and then rate the quality of the each athlete's movements. After scoring was completed, they were told to proceed to the questionnaire, which was designed to probe for awareness of the manipulation. Finally, look at the differences in the ratings of Wushu Routine athletes wearing different colored uniform by these different groups of participants, and whether the subjects in Experiment 1 would have been aware of color effect.

The results of Experiment 1 showed that both male and female athletes wearing red uniform (compared to blue uniform) received higher ratings, and the red effect was especially strong when male practitioners rated female athletes. The results of Experiment 2, in an all-female sample, showed that in most cases there was no difference in ratings made by women in the ovulation and non-ovulation phases of their menstrual cycle, with the exception of their ratings of male athletes wearing red; in this condition, women gave higher ratings when they were in the ovulation phase of their cycle.

Spanish Civil War Fighting Position (Guadarrama)

Winter 1938, after a quick but intense fortification labour the 72º Division was finishing the fortification of Cuesta de la Casa. It was during this hard winter in the montanious northern Madrid when the republicans were preparing an attack to interfer in the defensive works and, maybe, trying to retake this stronghold. The attack would be launched with fire support from faraway positions and machinegun-riffles. The francoist soldiers were warming in their positions with fires from what little wood they could find in the bold landscape. The goberment soldiers attacked, shooting their mausers and mosin-nagants and throwing grenades at close range. An intense fight took place, but no sucess was achived by the attackers. Remains of this particular event were found during the excavation and intensive survey of this position and surroundings. Exploded Laffite grenades, impacted bullets of spanish mauser and mosin-nagant from the attackers. Rests of a little fire place and the ammo used by the defenders. Source: Objaverse 1.0 / Sketchfab
