A geotagged image dataset with compass directions for studying the drivers of farmland abandonment

<p>In this work, we present a dataset containing a collection of pictures taken during the fieldwork of a farmland abandonment study. Data was taken in 2010 with a compact camera which incorporates GPS and a digital compass sensor. The photographs are taken as a part of a GIS database. Using their Exif metadata we created a layer of Geographic Fields Of View (GeoFOVs) that can be used to perform very specific spatial queries. The dataset contains 2,235 pictures and GIS layers of GeoFOVs contextualizing the agricultural plots being photographed.</p>

Sex-driven modifiers of Alzheimer's risk: a multi-modality brain imaging study

<p><span><b>Objective:</b> To investigate sex differences in late-onset Alzheimer's disease (AD) risks by means of multi-modality brain biomarkers <span>[β-amyloid load via </span><sup>11</sup>C-PiB<span> PET, and neurodegeneration via </span><sup>18</sup>F-FDG <span>PET and structural MRI]</span>.</span></p> <p><span><b>Methods:</b> We examined 121 cognitively normal participants [85 women and 36 men] ages 40-65, with clinical, laboratory, neuropsychological, lifestyle exams, and MRI, FDG- and PiB-PET exams. Several clinical (e.g. age, education, APOE status, family history), medical (e.g., depression, diabetes, hyperlipidemia), hormonal (e.g. thyroid disease, menopause), and lifestyle AD risk factors (e.g., smoking, diet, exercise, intellectual activity) were assessed. Statistical parametric mapping and LASSO regressions were used to compare AD-biomarkers between men and women, and to identify the risk factors associated with sex-related differences. </span></p> <p><b><span>Results:</span></b> Groups were comparable on clinical and cognitive measures. Adjusting for each modality-specific confounders, the female group showed higher PiB <span>β-amyloid </span>deposition, lower FDG glucose metabolism, and lower MRI gray and white matter volumes compared to the male group (p&lt;0.05, FWE-corrected for multiple comparisons). The male group did not show biomarker abnormalities compared to the female group. Results were independent of age and remained significant using age-matched groups. Second to female sex, menopausal status was the predictor most consistently and strongly associated with the observed brain biomarker differences, followed by hormone therapy, hysterectomy status, and thyroid disease.</p> <p><span><b><span>Conclusion:</span></b><span> Hormonal risk factors, in particular menopause, predict AD-endophenotype in middle-aged women. These findings suggest that the window of opportunity for AD-preventative interventions in women is early in the endocrine aging process.</span></span></p>

Data from: Delay of gratification is associated with white matter connectivity in the dorsal prefrontal cortex: a diffusion tensor imaging study in chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes)

Individual variability in delay of gratification (DG) is associated with a number of important outcomes in both non-human and human primates. Using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), this study describes the relationship between probabilistic estimates of white matter tracts projecting from the caudate to the prefrontal cortex (PFC) and DG abilities in a sample of 49 captive chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes). After accounting for time between collection of DTI scans and DG measurement, age and sex, higher white matter connectivity between the caudate and right dorsal PFC was found to be significantly associated with the acquisition (i.e. training phase) but not the maintenance of DG abilities. No other associations were found to be significant. The integrity of white matter connectivity between regions of the striatum and the PFC appear to be associated with inhibitory control in chimpanzees, with perturbations on this circuit potentially leading to a variety of maladaptive outcomes. Additionally, results have potential translational implications for understanding the pathophysiology of a number of psychiatric and clinical outcomes in humans.

Data from: A multimodal image guiding system for Navigated Ultrasound Bronchoscopy (EBUS): a human feasibility study

Background: Endobronchial ultrasound transbronchial needle aspiration (EBUS-TBNA) is the endoscopic method of choice for confirming lung cancer metastasis to mediastinal lymph nodes. Precision is crucial for correct staging and clinical decision-making. Navigation and multimodal imaging can potentially improve EBUS-TBNA efficiency. Aims: To demonstrate the feasibility of a multimodal image guiding system using electromagnetic navigation for ultrasound bronchoschopy in humans. Methods: Four patients referred for lung cancer diagnosis and staging with EBUS-TBNA were enrolled in the study. Target lymph nodes were predefined from the preoperative computed tomography (CT) images. A prototype convex probe ultrasound bronchoscope with an attached sensor for position tracking was used for EBUS-TBNA. Electromagnetic tracking of the ultrasound bronchoscope and ultrasound images allowed fusion of preoperative CT and intraoperative ultrasound in the navigation software. Navigated EBUS-TBNA was used to guide target lymph node localization and sampling. Navigation system accuracy was calculated, measured by the deviation between lymph node position in ultrasound and CT in three planes. Procedure time, diagnostic yield and adverse events were recorded. Results: Preoperative CT and real-time ultrasound images were successfully fused and displayed in the navigation software during the procedures. Overall navigation accuracy (11 measurements) was 10.0 ± 3.8 mm, maximum 17.6 mm, minimum 4.5 mm. An adequate sample was obtained in 6/6 (100%) of targeted lymph nodes. No adverse events were registered. Conclusions: Electromagnetic navigated EBUS-TBNA was feasible, safe and easy in this human pilot study. The clinical usefulness was clearly demonstrated. Fusion of real-time ultrasound, preoperative CT and electromagnetic navigational bronchoscopy provided a controlled guiding to level of target, intraoperative overview and procedure documentation.

Data from: Retrospective study using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to measure depths of acupuncture points in neck and shoulder region

Objectives: There are safety issues associated with acupuncture treatment. Previous studies regarding needling depth of acupuncture points revealed inconsistent results due to vague depth definition, acupuncture point localisation and measuring tools. The objective of this study is to find and compare the differences of the mean depths of 11 acupuncture points in the neck and shoulder region between subjects, with variables including gender and body mass index (BMI). Setting: This study was conducted at a single medical center in Taiwan. Participants: Three hundred and ninety-four participants were included in this study. Participants were grouped according to gender and BMI. Acupuncture points were localised by WHO standard and measured by MRI. Outcome measures: The distance from the needle insertion point (surface of the skin) to any tissues that would cause possible/severe complications. Results: Mean depths of 11 points were obtained in groups of different BMI and gender. Mean depths of all participants regardless of BMI and gender are as follows, in centimetres: GB21=5.6, SI14=5.2, SI15=8.8, GV15=4.9, GV16=4.6, GB20=5.0, ST9=1.6, SI16=1.8, SI17=2.4, TE16=3.1, LI18=1.3. Participants with higher BMI had greater measured depths in both gender groups. Male participants had larger mean depths than female participants regardless of BMI except in SI17 and LI18. When taking BMI into consideration, depths in male participants are greater than in female participants in most of the points except the following: GB21, TE16 in obesity group; ST9 in underweight and obesity group; SI16 in ideal body weight, overweight and obesity group; SI17, LI18 in each group. Conclusions: Participants with higher BMI had greater measured depths and males tended to have greater depths in most of the points. Clinical practitioners are recommended to consider this information to prevent complications when applying acupuncture treatment to their patients.
