Songbird yields resulting from different forest management practices in the Oregon Coast Range, 2019-2021

Data in this package was used to model the responses of forest songbirds to landscape scale forest management strategies. The majority of data was derived from emprical studies (avian point counts) conducted by the principal investigator or mined from the literature. Gaps in the data were filled in via expert opinion, considering the life history and habitat needs of the species.

Negative outcomes of novel trophic interactions along mangrove range edges in the Gulf of Mexico: 2020-2021

Mangrove encroachment is shifting the food sources available to basal consumers in Gulf of Mexico salt marshes, so we sought to determine how two important basal consumers will respond to mangroves as a food source. We collected Littoraria irrorata and leaves of Spartina alterniflora, and Avicennia germinans from marshes in Galveston, Texas in summer of 2020 for a series of food preference and food quality studies. Additionally, we compared the physiological conditions of Littoraria irrorata and Uca rapax individuals collected from manipulated sites with varying levels of mangrove cover in Port Aransas, Texas in late 2020 and early 2021. These studies yielded results on the behavioral and physiological responses of basal consumers to mangrove plant matter as a food source.

Effect of thinning pole stands on soil processes in southern Oregon, central Coast Range, and central western Cascades of Oregon (1994-1995 BLM Study)

This study was conducted in different regions to determine if climatic regimes alter the effects of thinning pole stands. Forest managers are currently faced with increasingly complex demands in designing sulvicultural approaches that fulfill the need to maintain and in some cases, enhance forest health. As mature and old-growth forests with their high degree of structural heterogeneity are replaced by younger plantations with much simpler structure, there is concern that key habitat components are being lost for a number of plants and animals. A silviculture technique that could be used to increase the structural complexity of young stands to thin them; encouraging the development of higher structural complexity. The main purposes of this study is to determine how thinning pole stands influence below-ground processes. The central research question was whether or not this manipulation brings soil characteristics closer to those found in old-growth forests; in essence, accelerating the onset of old-growth-like characteristics via forest management.

Concentration of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), carbon and nitrogen concentrations, C:N ratios and del 13C isotope value for lakes and rivers on North Slope from Brooks Range to Prudhoe Bay, Arctic LTER 1988 to 2005

Composite file describing plant, animal, water, and sediment samples collected at various sites near Toolik Research Station (68 38'N, 149 36'W). Sample site descriptors include an assigned number specific to the file, a number that relates the samples to other samples collected on the same date and time (sortchem), site, date, time, and depth. Samples are identified by type, category, and a short description. Data include isotope values, carbon and nitrogen concentrations, and C:N ratios of samples.

Standardized ring-width chronologies for white and black spruce at three sites in the southern Brooks Range, Alaska

Although black spruce is the dominant treeline species in the eastern boreal forest, its distribution stops several kilometers short of treeline in the Brooks Range in Alaska, and white spruce is the dominant treeline species. The explanation for this distribution is not known, but two hypotheses are plausible. First, black spruce may be less tolerant of climatic conditions near treeline than white spruce. Second, black spruce may be unable to regenerate successfully near treeline due to long intervals between fires. We are establishing permanently marked study plots along a transect from the Yukon River basin, where black spruce is the dominant species, to the foothills of the Brooks Range, where it reaches its distributional limit. We are reconstructing recruitment history of both black and white spruce at our study sites, and are reconstructing recent fire history from analysis of fire scars and stand age structures. These data are being used to parameterize matrix population models, with which we are describing patterns of population stability.

Surface soil analyses from a range of mesquite sites at Jornada Basin LTER, 1986

This data package contains data from a series of analyses of surface soils in mesquite habitats during the early years of Jornada Basin LTER (LTER-I and II). The objective of the study was to determine whether there have been changes in the structure and function of the surface (0-20cm) soil system, the zone most affected by litter decomposition, associated with the rapid movement of mesquite (Prosopsis glandulosa) from historical habitats (arroyo and playa fringe) into recent habitats (grassland and dunes). The mesquite soils were sampled at 4 habitats (playa, coppice dune, arroyo, and grassland) in October 1986, with subsamples analyzed and incubated in the laboratory thereafter. This data set contains analyses for gravimetric soil moisture, pH, phosphate, total Kjeldahl nitrogen, total phosphorus, NO3-N nitrogen mineralization, total inorganic nitrogen, NH4 nitrogen mineralization, organic carbon, inorganic carbon, total roots, tap roots, intermediate roots, and fine roots. This data set is complete.

SGS-LTER Spatial variability in seed production of the perennial bunchgrass Bouteloua gracilis on the Central Plains Experimental Range, Nunn, Colorado, USA 1992-2005, ARS Study Number 20

This data package was produced by researchers working on the Shortgrass Steppe Long Term Ecological Research (SGS-LTER) Project, administered at Colorado State University. Long-term datasets and background information (proposals, reports, photographs, etc.) on the SGS-LTER project are contained in a comprehensive project collection within the Digital Collections of Colorado (http://digitool.library.colostate.edu/R/?func=collections&collection_id=3429). The data table and associated metadata document, which is generated in Ecological Metadata Language, may be available through other repositories serving the ecological research community and represent components of the larger SGS-LTER project collection. Production of seeds of Bouteloua gracilis was evaluated for a semiarid grassland in northeastern Colorado. Ten locations were chosed to represent the range in soil textures and grazing intensities found at the Central Plains Experiemental Range research site. Number of flowering culms, inforescences and seeds, length of each flowering clum, total biomass or reproductive structures (culms, inforescences and seeds), and basal areas were assessed for each plant sampled. Community-level estimates of density of flowering culms and density of viable seeds are made for each location. Both soil texture and grazing intensity by cattle are important to spatial variability in seed production and other indicators of reproductive effort by B. gracilis.
