Energy-water and seasonal variations in climate underlie the spatial distribution patterns of gymnosperms species richness in China
<p>Studying the pattern of species richness is crucial in understanding the diversity and distribution of organisms in the earth. Climate and human influences are the major driving factors that directly influence the large-scale distributions of plant species, including gymnosperms. Understanding how gymnosperms respond to climate, topography, and human-induced changes is useful in predicting the impacts of global change. Here, we attempt to evaluate how climatic and human-induced processes could affect the spatial richness patterns of gymnosperms in China. Initially, we divided a map of the country into grid cells of 50 × 50 km<sup>2 </sup>spatial resolution and plotted the geographical coordinate distribution occurrence of 236 native gymnosperm taxa. The gymnosperm taxa were separated into three response variables: (i) all species, (ii) endemic species, and (iii) non-endemic species, based on their distribution. The species richness patterns of these response variables to four predictor sets were also evaluated: (i) energy-water, (ii) climatic seasonality, (iii) habitat heterogeneity, and (iv) human influences. We performed generalized linear models (GLMs) and variation partitioning analyses to determine the effect of predictors on spatial richness patterns. The results showed that the distribution pattern of species richness was highest in the southwestern mountainous area and Taiwan in China. We found a significant relationship between the predictor variable set and species richness pattern. Further, our findings provide evidence that climatic seasonality is the most important factor in explaining distinct fractions of variations in the species richness patterns of all studied response variables. Moreover, it was found that energy-water was the best predictor set to determine the richness pattern of all species and endemic species, while habitat-heterogeneity has a better influence on non-endemic species. Therefore, we conclude that with the current climate fluctuations as a result of climate change and increasing human activities, gymnosperms might face a high risk of extinction.</p>

Elastic energy storage in seahorses leads to a unique suction flow dynamics compared to other actinopterygian
<p></p><p>Suction feeding is a dominant prey-capture strategy across actinopterygians, consisting of a rapid expansion of the mouth cavity that drives a flow of water containing the prey into the mouth. Suction feeding is a power-hungry behavior, involving the actuation of cranial muscles as well as the anterior third of the fish's swimming muscles. Seahorses, which have reduced swimming muscles, evolved a unique mechanism for elastic energy storage that powers their suction flows. This mechanism allows seahorses to achieve head rotation speeds that are 50 times faster than fish lacking such a mechanism. However, it is unclear how the dynamics of suction flows in seahorses differ from the conserved pattern observed across other actinopterygians, nor how differenced in snout length across seahorses affect these flows. Using flow visualization experiments, we show that seahorses generate suction flows that are 8 times faster than similar-sized fish, and that the temporal patterns of cranial kinematics and suction flows in seahorses differs from the conserved pattern observed across other actinopterygians. However, the spatial patterns retain the conserved actinopterygian characteristics, where suction flows impact a radially symmetric region of ∼1 gape diameter outside the mouth. Within seahorses, increases in snout length were associated with slower suction flows and faster head rotation speeds, resulting in a trade-off between pivot feeding and suction feeding. Overall, this study shows how the unique cranial kinematics in seahorses are manifested in their suction feeding performance, and highlights the trade-offs associated with their unique morphology and mechanics.</p><p></p>
Body size, trophic position, and the coupling of different energy pathways across a saltmarsh landscape
<p>Here, we listed the bulk stable isotope values (δ13C and δ15N) and body size measurements of organisms that were analyzed in the manuscript "Body size, trophic position, and the coupling of different energy pathways across a saltmarsh landscape", published in Limnology and Oceanography Letters. Our dataset is a compilation of samplings obtained by the Southern Louisiana marsh food webs project within the Coastal Waters Consortium (CWC) II (Lopez-Duarte et al. 2017a [https://doi.org/10.7266/N7XS5SGD], Lopez-Duarte et al. 2017b [https://doi.org/10.7266/N79W0CJW], Polito et al. 2019 [https://doi.org/10.7266/n7-6277-1216]). The dataset consists of 1563 individual samples from 77 taxa, including basal sources (plants, phytoplankton, detritus, and microphytobenthos), fishes, invertebrates (insects, crustaceans, and spiders), infauna, seaside sparrows (Ammospiza maritima), and marsh rice rats (Oryzomys palustris). Samplings were conducted in three sites, Bay Sansbois, Bay Batiste, and West Pointe à la Hache, located in northeastern Barataria Bay. Bay Sansbois and Bay Batiste were sampled in May and October 2015, and May 2016, whereas West Pointe à la Hache was sampled only in May 2016. Body size measurements are available for 59% of all samples (52 taxa) while δ13C and δ15N are available for all samples.</p>

All research data and software resources were identified and extracted from Zenodo. The (re)use indications were identified by a mix of approaches: use of citation discovery services and multiple search approaches in Google Scholar. All identified research data and software (re)use indications were classified according to their purpose, location, and elements.</p> <p>The data was collected in 2018 for a PhD thesis on research data and software (re)use indications in scholarly works.</p>

Expression levels and activities of energy-yielding ATPases in the oligohaline neritid snail Theodoxus fluviatilis under changing environmental salinities
<p>The aquatic gastropod Theodoxus fluviatilis occurs in Europe and adjacent areas of Asia. The snail species has formed two genetically closely related subgroups, the freshwater ecotype (FW) and the brackish water ecotype (BW). Other than individuals of the FW ecotype, those of the BW ecotype survive in salinities of up to 28‰. Coastal aquatic ecosystems may be affected by climate change due to salinization. Thus, we investigated how the two Theodoxus ecotypes adjust to changes in environmental salinity focussing on the question whether Na+ /K+ -ATPase or V-ATPase are regulated on the transcriptional, the translational or at the activity level under changing external salinities. Animals were gradually adjusted to extreme salinities in containers under long-day conditions and constant temperature. Whole body RNA- or protein extracts were prepared. Semi-quantitative PCR and Western Blot-analyses did not reveal major changes in transcript or protein abundances for the two transporters under low or high salinity conditions. No significant changes in ATPase activities in whole body extracts of animals adjusted to high or low salinity conditions were detected. We conclude that constitutive expression of ATPases is sufficient to support osmotic and ion regulation in this species under changing salinities given the high level of tolerance with respect to changes in body fluid volume.</p>
On energy transfer of parametric resonance for wave energy conversion
<p>Parametric resonance has been observed, both numerically and experimentally, in various studies of wave energy converters (WECs). A large motion in heave induces a periodic variation in the metacentric height of a WEC body, and, consequently, causes a harmonic variation in pitch/roll restoring coefficients, which can parametrically excite the pitch/roll modes. Current studies have a specific focus to determine the occurrence conditions of parametric resonance, by detecting the boundaries between stable and unstable regions in the parameter space. In the literature, some studies aim to make use of parametric resonance for improving power capture. In contrast, some studies try to suppress the effect of parametric resonance, as it reduces power capture efficiency. However, how energy transfers from one mode to another is not fully understood. This study aims to analyse the energy transfer between heave and pitch/roll modes when parametric resonance occurs. A generic cylindrical point absorber is studied as a WEC floater to considering non-linear wave-structure interaction, including non-linear Froude-Krylov and viscous forces. A heave-pitch-roll three-degree-of-freedom model is derived for numerical study of the energy transfer between different operation modes.</p>
Tracking wildlife energy dynamics with unoccupied aircraft systems and 3-dimensional photogrammetry
<p>We present a novel application using unoccupied aircraft systems (UAS; drones) for structure-from-motion three-dimensional (3-D) photogrammetry of multiple, free-ranging animals simultaneously. Pinnipeds reliably haul-out on shore for pupping and breeding each year, accompanied by dramatic female-to-pup mass transfer over a short lactation period and males lose mass while defending mating territories. This provides a tractable study system for validating the use of UAS as a non-invasive tool for tracking energy dynamics in wild populations.</p> <p>UAS imagery of grey seals (<i>Halichoerus grypus</i>) was collected at Saddle Island, Nova Scotia. A multirotor UAS was piloted in 360-degree orbits around relatively dense animal aggregations and georeferenced images were used for construction of a 3-D point cloud, orthomosaic, and Digital Surface Model for animal volumetric measurements. Directly following UAS survey, a subset of adult females were hand-measured (morphometrics, blubber depth, n=21 handlings [15 were unique animals]) and female-pup pairs were weighed (adult females: n=32 [24]; pups: n=33 [23]) to validate that UAS 3-D photogrammetric models provided accurate animal volume and mass estimates.</p> <p>UAS two-dimensional body length measurements were sensitive to animal recumbency and posture. The new UAS 3-D photogrammetric method overcame these constraints, and aerial-derived body volume measurements were equivalent to those collected from the ground. UAS body volume measurements precisely predicted 'true' body mass (mean-absolute-error, adult female: 8 kg, 2.1% body mass; pup: 4.1 kg, 9.8%), and exhibited a stronger relationship with total body mass than with blubber volume.</p> <p>The method was applied to 673 free-ranging animals to characterize volume and mass dynamics across lactation and breeding for a much larger sample size than would be possible using traditional ground methods. Indeed, 1-46 animals (mean±SE: 9.2±1.2) were modeled concurrently within the focal area of a UAS flight. Application of the method also captured significant inter-annual variation in body volume/mass dynamics, and female-to-pup energy transfer efficiencies were lower when there was low sea-ice extent. The UAS 3-D photogrammetric method presented in this study is likely to be broadly applicable to other species, and the ability to measure whole groups of free-ranging animals at once makes strides towards 'weighing populations'.</p>
Observation of robust energy transfer in the photosynthetic protein allophycocyanin using single-molecule pump-probe spectroscopy - single-molecule photon stream
<p>Photon stream used in the article "<em>Observation of robust energy transfer in the photosynthetic protein allophycocyanin using single-molecule pump-probe spectroscopy" </em> to analyze single-molecule fluorescence emission. Detected emission for single-molecule pump-probe experiments with an associated instrument response function (IRF) and background fluoresence (BG). Each detected photon is described by its time within the collected photon stream and its time relative to the excitation laser. Data is organized by sample and by date. Also included is an .xlsx document with fitted timescales for all included molecules and Matalb structure titled 'FinalDataAndStatistics.mat', which includes the final data, and statistics for the data used within the paper.</p>
