Soil physicochemical properties in Chushandian reservoir

<p><span>The impoundment of dams can significantly alter shorelines, hydrological regimes, sediment settling, and the soil nutrient cycle. With the completion of the Chushandian Reservoir Dam, land-use types around the reservoir have been profoundly affected by inundation. As yet, the changes due to inundation in soil properties for different land-use types have not been fully explored. We investigated the variation of soil physicochemical properties of different land-use types (abandoned cropland, grassland, and woodland) near the Chushandian Reservoir at several distances after short-term inundation and found that </span><span>soil pH varied in the range of 5-6.5. The soil texture of abandoned cropland and grassland was dominated by silt particles, but the soil texture of woodland was dominated by sand particles. The ranges of variation in soil TC and TN for different land-use types were 5.26-33.91 and 0.59-2.68 g/kg, respectively. Woodland soil was characterized by low NH<sub>4</sub>-N and high NO<sub>3</sub>-N,</span><span> which may be related to denitrification. In addition, </span><span>we observed that inundation affected the soil nutrient status of the different land-use types in the riparian zone in the short-term after reservoir impoundment, especially in abandoned cropland and grassland.</span><span> However, </span><span>woodland showed better tolerance to inundation. Furthermore, there are two different mechanisms of soil properties in response to inundation at the distance scales for the woodland land-use type. Soil properties are dominated by microbial activity in the far-away region and by chemical properties in the near-water region. By contrast, the soil properties in abandoned cropland and grassland are dominated by physical properties. Finally, we found that microbial biomass may be an essential indicator that can characterize the ability of riparian zone soil to respond to inundation.</span></p>

Impacts on food web properties of island invertebrate communities vary between different human land uses

<p><span>Human land use is of growing concern for island ecosystems. Besides direct impacts on biodiversity, land uses can alter the functioning and structure of ecosystems. Central to this are impacts on food webs. The release of additional nutrients from human origin, habitat homogenization, or environmental filtering due to human land use can change the diet of individual consumer species (i.e., their trophic niches) and the distribution and overlap of trophic niches within a food web. However, it remains largely unclear whether the effects on food web properties vary between the different and predominant human land uses present on islands. Here, we investigated the impact of two dominant human land uses on small oceanic islands (i.e., urban and tourism development) and tested if and how different land uses on islands affect food web structure. To disentangle human land uses, we investigated islands, which were either privately owned by a tourist facility (i.e., exclusively tourism land use) or experienced urban development from the local population (i.e., urban land use), or remained uninhabited, serving as reference sites free of direct land use. Using stable isotope analysis, we show that isotope signature, trophic (isotopic) niches, and overall food web properties of the investigated island invertebrate communities were significantly changed under both land use regimes. While trophic diversity was reduced and trophic niche widths increased under tourism land use, the investigated food webs showed reduced trophic diversity at the food web base and a more uneven trophic niche distribution under urban land use. In summary, these findings show that different human land uses can have contrasting impacts on oceanic island food webs. As oceanic islands experience rapidly growing human land conversion, our results indicate that they may also face increasing yet unpredictable long-term changes in food web dynamics.</span></p>

Data for: Andic soil properties and tephra layers hamper C turnover in Icelandic peatlands - selective dissolution of Al, Fe, Si and decomposition proxies

<p>Due to frequent volcanic activity and erosion of dryland soils, peatlands in Iceland receive regular additions of mineral aeolian deposits (tephra and eroded material). Therefore, their soils may develop not only histic, but also andic characteristics. Here we present data sets of a study that elucidates interactions between carbon characteristics and andic soil properties in Histosols of three Icelandic peatlands. The data sets contain information about the soil carbon structure derived by <sup>13</sup>C NMR spectroscopy, andic soil properties based on selective dissolution of Al, Fe and Si, decomposition proxies C/N, δ<sup>13</sup>C and δ<sup>15</sup>N, information on total carbon and nitrogen content, dry bulk density, soil organic matter content and pH measured in deionised water and NaF solution.</p>

Future changes in mangrove coastal water properties

<p>This dataset contains data on future changes in sea-surface water properties along the global distribution of mangrove forests. This includes the coordinates of mangrove occurence and associated information on present (2000-2014) and future (2090-2100) sea-surface temperature (SST), sea-surface salinity (SSS), and sea-surface density (SSD, derived from SST and SSS, using the UNESCO EOS-80 equation of state polynomial for seawater - 'sw_dens.m' in MATLAB). SST and SSS fields from which the data were extracted, are from the Bio-ORACLE database. Additionally, for each of the mangrove occurence points (longitude, latitude), information is provided about the main mangrove biogeographical region and associated province as provided in the Marine Ecoregions of the World dataset (Spalding et al., 2007, <em>BioScience</em>), alowing for a spatial analysis of the data. More information and details about the data are provided in the README sheet of the Excel data file.</p>

Psychometric properties of intentional and unintentional non-adherence measurement tools

<p><span>Background</span><span>: Distinguishing intentional from unintentional non-adherence (persistent forgetfulness) is key when contemplating interventions to optimise medication adherence.</span></p> <p><span>Objective</span><span>: To categorise patient-reported-outcome measures (PROM) into their propensity to detect intentional and unintentional non-adherence to medication, and to synthesise their psychometric properties.</span></p> <p><span>Design</span><span>: Review's conduct and reporting were based on the PRISMA-2020 checklist and COSMIN-2018 guidelines. We searched publications from January 1980 –1 March 2022 in MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, International Pharmaceutical Abstracts and Cochrane Library. Articles describing the PROM development and validation of the scoring </span><span>methods to categorise patients into non or adherent, and those which incorporated a proxy measure for adherence were included. We assessed the quality of studies using the COSMIN risk of bias tool and included studies which described a minimum of 2 psychometric properties. Open-ended PROM items, which were without a method of scoring, or translated versions were excluded. To ensure an exhaustive binning process, 2 reviewers independently evaluated and coded every criterion-item for possible inclusion into both an outcome and a process domain bin deemed fit.</span></p> <p><span>Outcomes</span><span>: Outcome domain-bins were intentional, unintentional or mixed. Process domains were behaviour (e.g., self-efficacy), barrier (e.g., impaired dexterity), or belief (e.g., perception). PROM were assigned an overall category of either intentional(I), unintentional (UI) or mixed (UI/I) depending on the collective leading domain of the individual criterion-items.</span></p> <p><span>Results</span><span>: 59 PROM were validated among patients aged 18 to 85 years in the USA and UK, Europe (Netherlands, Belgium, France, Spain, Switzerland), Middle East (Turkey) and Australasia (Malaysia, China, Australia).  44 PROM were primarily intentional (I=491 criterion-items) while 13 were mixed (I=79/ UI=50) and the remaining 2, unintentional (UI=5). The corresponding process domains were belief (n=383 items), barrier (n=192 items), and behaviour (165 items). Psychometrics evaluation revealed heterogeneity for: i) PROM definitions – severity cut-off scores, and scoring method (ordinal, dichotomised, visual analogue scale), and for ii) criterion validity –varied proxy measures  used (biomarkers, pill count, electronic monitors). One's belief, behaviour, and barriers encountered were likely indicators for I, UI and mixed U/I non-adherence respectively.</span></p> <p><span>Conclusion</span><span>: Medication non-adherence that is primarily intentional, is highly prevalent. Eight  intentional and 2 partial intentionality PROM exhibited adequate psychometric properties. Fortification of patients' knowledge and illness perception, as opposed to daily reminders alone, is necessary.</span></p>

Income Inequality in Authoritarian Regimes: The Effect of Institutions, Rights to Private Property, and Globalization

<p>This paper study the relationship between income inequality and authoritarian political institutions under globalization. More specifically, its purpose is to understand the effect of how different institutional setup, in this case the presence of electoral institutions, size of ruling coalition, and, protection of property rights affect the level of income inequality in authoritarian regimes. Furthermore, this paper adds to the conventional independent variables typically used in authoritarian studies literature by adding international market forces represented by trade and financial globalization by KOF Index. Analyzing 100 authoritarian regimes from 1972 to 2019, this study found that 1) when globalization are not taken into account the institutional setup of authoritarian regimes affect the level of income inequality in authoritarian regimes. In particular, regimes with large ruling coalition and institutionalized election and party competitions is expected to have lower level of&nbsp; income inequality; (2) protection to rights to private property is inversely related with income inequality, with regimes which have higher protection of the rights to private property tend to have lower income equality; (3) trade and financial globalization are inversely related with income inequality; and (4)&nbsp; the impact of domestic political institution is subdued when international market forces are taken into account</p>
