Compilation of Holocene alkenone SST records along the North Pacific margins (including a new core Oki02 in the Okinawa Trough)

The sediment core Oki02 (26°04' N, 125°12' E, 1,612 m water depth), located in the Okinawa Trough, is used to analyze ~100-year-resolution alkenone-based sea surface temperature (SST) values during the Holocene. Together with previously published Holocene alkenone SST paleorecords on the pathways of a set of boundary currents flowing along the North Pacific margins, e.g., the Kuroshio Current, California Current, and Alaska Current, and available foraminiferal Globigerinoides ruber Mg/Ca-based SST records over the Western Pacific Warm Pool (WPWP), we are able to investigate the centennial- to multimillennial scale variations of the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre circulation throughout the Holocene.

Data from: Transcriptome analysis reveals the mechanism underlying rapid changes in the early phase brain of bi-directional sex change in Trimma okinawae

Teleost fish exhibit remarkable sexual plasticity and display divergent developmental systems including hermaphroditism. One of the more fascinating model systems of sexual plasticity is socially controlled sex change, which is often observed in coral reef fish. The Okinawa rubble goby, Trimma okinawae, is a bi-directional sex change fish that can rapidly change its sex in both directions depending on social circumstances. Although behavioral and neuro-endocrinal sex change occurs within an hour and is believed to trigger gonadal changes, the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. In this study, we conducted a de novo transcriptome analysis of the T. okinawae brain and identified genes that were differentially expressed between the sexes and genes that were immediately controlled by social stimulation causing a sex change. We found that a larger number of genes are regulated during the male-to-female transition compared with a change from female to male. Several genes showed concordant expression shifts regardless of the sex change direction. Furthermore, some were associated with histone modification in nerve cells and regulated in the same direction. Overall, we identified genes that regulate the rapid behavioral and neuroendocrinal control of sex change and provide insight into the mechanism of sexual plasticity in teleost fish.

Shuri Castle / Shurijō, Naha - Okinawa .WIP
Digital reconstruction from crowdsourced photogrammetry. Work in progress. This is part of the initiative for Digital reconstruction of Shurijo Castle: https://www.our-shurijo.org/index_en.html Final model will be updated in the near future with better mesh and textures. . Shurijo castle is a Ryukyuan gusuku in Shuri, Okinawa. Between 1429 and 1879, it was the palace of the Ryukyu Kingdom, before becoming largely neglected. In 1945, during the Battle of Okinawa, it was almost completely destroyed. After the war, the castle was re-purposed as a university campus. Beginning in 1992, the central citadel and walls were largely reconstructed on the original site based on historical records, photographs, and memory. On the morning of 31 October 2019, the main courtyard structures of the castle were destroyed in a fire. Source: Objaverse 1.0 / Sketchfab

Femtosecond-LA-ICP-MS analysis recording variation in trace elements in Amphistegina lessonii from Akajima, Okinawa Prefecture, Japan

The data set comprises of sea surface temperatures, salinity which were recorded from Akajima Island, Okinawa Prefecture, Japan during the year 2003 and 2004. The tidal heights data was generated using the software Tide Predictor for the Akajima Island. The Element/Ca analysis of larger benthic foraminifera Amphistegina lessonii was carried out by using Femto-second Laser Ablation Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometer (fs-LA-ICP-MS) technique at the Department of Climate Geochemistry, Max Planck Institute for Chemistry. The co-variation and correlation plots of Element/Ca with tidal heights, sea surface temperature and sea surface salinity are also provided.

Data from: A new solitary free-living species of the genus Sphenopus (Cnidaria: Anthozoa: Zoantharia: Sphenopidae) from Okinawa-jima Island, Japan
A new species of free-living solitary zoantharian is described from Okinawa, Japan. Sphenopus exilis sp. n. occurs on silty seafloors in Kin Bay and Oura Bay on the east coast of Okinawa-jima Island. Sphenopus exilis sp. n. is easily distinguished from other Sphenopus species by its small polyp size and slender shape, although there were relatively few differences between Sphenopus exilis sp. n. and S. marsupialis in the molecular phylogenetic analyses. Currently, very little is known about the ecology and diversity of Sphenopus species. Thus, reviewing each species carefully via combined morphological and molecular analyses by using newly obtained specimens from type localities is required to clearly understand and distinguish the species within the genus Sphenopus.
