ICDAR'15 SMARTPHONE DOCUMENT CAPTURE AND OCR COMPETITION (SmartDoc) - Challenge 1 (original version)

CHALLENGE 1: SMARTPHONE DOCUMENT CAPTURE COMPETITION

Smartphones are replacing personal scanners. They are portable, connected, powerful and affordable. They are on their way to become the new entry point in business processing applications like document archival, ID scanning, check digitization, just to name a few. In order keep our workflows streamlined, we need to make those new capture device as reliable as batch scanners.

We believe an efficient capture process should be able to:

detect and segment the relevant document object during the preview phase;

assess the quality of the capture conditions and help the user improve them;

optionally, trigger the capture at the perfect moment;

and produce a high-quality, controlled output based on the high resolution captured image.

This competition is focused on the first step of this process: efficiently detect and segment document regions, as illustrated by following video showing the ideal output for the preview phase of some acquisition session: Click here to watch the video. This video shows the ideal document object detection ‎(ie the ground truth, as a red frame)‎.

For this challenge, the input consists in a set of videoclips containing a document from a predefined set, and the output should be an xml file containing the quadrilateral coordinates in which we can find the document per each frame of the video. Click here for detailed information about the dataset.

Licence for the dataset of challenge 1 (page outline detection in preview frames) :

This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License <http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/>. The Encyclopedia of Life (EOL, eol.org) aggregates biodiversity information from more than 400 sources and provides access to the data through taxon pages, visual query and application programming interfaces. Scientific names are essential elements of the data integration infrastructure, but their shortcomings as key identifiers are well documented (Patterson et al., 2016). Complex automated workflows and continuous manual curation are required to address idiosyncrasies of source taxonomies, variation in data quality, and conflicting taxonomic opinions. To achieve a harmonized taxonomic view of EOL content, names from data sources are mapped to a dynamic reference hierarchy ([see current version here](

https://opendata.eol.org/dataset/tram-807-808-809-810-dh-v1-1/resource/00adb47b-57ed-4f6b-8f66-83bfdb5120e8)) using an algorithm that leverages canonical name strings, hierarchical information (ancestry, descendants), taxonomic ranks, synonym data, and author strings. Names that cannot be associated with a reference taxon are still accessible, but their unmapped status excludes them and any associated content from certain core EOL functions. For more information about the EOL taxonomy, see [EOL Dynamic Hierarchy](

https://eol.org/docs/eol-dynamic-hierarchy)

RE-Lab-Projects/TRY_DE_2015_2045: Test Reference Years (TRY) for 15 typical regions in germany with special regards on realisitc radiation data on a 1min timescale

Test Reference Years (TRY) for 15 typical regions in germany with special regards on realisitc radiation data on a 1min timescale

Summary:

The data set contains the updated test reference years (TRY) of the German Weather Service (DWD). By subdividing into 15 TRY regions, each postcode area can be assigned a representative weather data set. It should be emphasized that in addition to a mean, current test reference year for a region, there is also a year with extreme summer and extreme winter weather. To take climate change into account, there is then a time series for the year 2045 for each test reference year based on the IPCC climate models. This means that a total of 90 weather data sets are available with a one-hour time resolution.

In order to use the data in simulations with a temporal resolution of 1min or 15min, the data set was extended by linear interpolation. While this approach is justifiable for air pressure and temperature, for example, it does not depict high fluctuations in solar radiation. Therefore, based on the one-minute open data measurement data set of the Baseline Surface Radiation Network, with an algorithm by Hofmann et. al. the time series of global radiation are newly generated for all test reference years. Another algorithm by Hofmann et. al. was used to calculate the corresponding diffuse radiation times series.

Sources:

Raw data from DWD: https://kunden.dwd.de/obt/ ->
1_raw-data

Synthetic 1min radiation data: http://pvmodelling.org/ ->
2_synthetic-radiation

How to use or recreate the final dataset:

clone/download this repository

unzip the files from the data.zip file

https://github.com/RE-Lab-Projects/TRY_DE_2015_2045/releases/download/v1.4.0/data.zip

Use or recreate the final dataset

use: Final datasets are then located in ->
3_processed-data

recreate: run the
process-data.py

Test reference stations / regions

No. | lon | lat | station | region
1 | 53.5591 | 8.5872 | Bremerhaven | Nordseeküste
2 | 54.0878 | 12.1088 | Rostock | Ostseeküste
3 | 53.5299 | 10.0078 | Hamburg | Nordwestdeutsches Tiefland
4 | 52.3938 | 13.0651 | Potsdam | Nordostdeutsches Tiefland
5 | 51.4562 | 7.0568 | Essen | Niederrheinisch-westfälische Bucht und Emsland
6 | 550.6461 | 7.9426 | Bad Marienburg | Nördliche und westliche Mittelgebirge, Randgebiete
7 | 51.3334 | 9.4725 | Kassel | Nördliche und westliche Mittelgebirge, zentrale Bereiche
8 | 51.7239 | 10.6069 | Braunlage | Oberharz und Schwarzwald (mittlere Lagen)
9 | 50.8233 | 12.9181 | Chemnitz | Thüringer Becken und Sächsisches Hügelland
10 | 50.3226 | 11.9124 | Hof | Südöstliche Mittelgebirge bis 1000 m
11 | 50.4312 | 12.9522 | Fichtelberg | Erzgebirge, Böhmer- und Schwarzwald oberhalb 1000 m
12 | 49.4902 | 8.4637 | Mannheim | Oberrheingraben und unteres Neckartal
13 | 48.2432 | 12.5286 | Mühldorf | Schwäbisch-fränkisches Stufenland und Alpenvorland
14 | 48.6536 | 9.8666 | Stötten | Schwäbische Alb und Baar
15 | 47.4945 | 11.1046 | Garmisch Partenkirchen | Alpenrand und -täler

Content

files: 90 test reference years (TRY)

15 test reference regions x 3 reference conditions (average year, extreme summer, extreme winter) x 2 reference projections (year 2015 and year 2045)

columns per file:

datetime [yyyy-MM-dd hh:mm:ss+01:00/02:00] temperature [degC] pressure [hPa] wind direction [deg] wind speed [m/s] cloud coverage [1/8] humidity [%] direct irradiance [W/m^2] diffuse irradiance [W/m^2] synthetic global irradiance [W/m^2] synthetic diffuse irradiance [W/m^2] clear sky irradiance [W/m^2]

length: 1 year

time increment: 60s / 900s / 3600s

Important hints:

all files in
3_processed-data
were calculated with the skript
process-data.py

A value with, for example, a timestamp 12:00:00 represents the mean value from this timestamp until the following timestamp.

datetime column is in CET / CEST

Geologic Map of Ceres [Dawn Mission] - Global dataset based on the 15 individual quadrangle maps

Background: Between 2011 and 2018, the NASA Dawn spacecraft visited asteroid (4) Vesta and dwarf planet (1) Ceres to investigate the surfaces of both protoplanets through optical and hyperspectral imaging and their composition through gamma-ray and neutron spectroscopy from orbit.
For both Vesta and Ceres, a geologic mapping investigation was realized based on optical and hyperspectral data as well as a photogrammetrically derived digital terrain model. For the global mapping investigation, mappers employed Geographic Information System (GIS) software to map 15 quadrangles. The results were published as individual map sheets alongside research papers discussing the geologic evolution. The style of collaborative mapping to produce a consistent global view represented by individual quadrangle maps is comparably new despite abundantly available mapping experiences. Ongoing data acquisition during mapping created considerable challenges for the coordination and homogenization of mapping results.

To handle this issue simultaniously to the active mission phase as best as possible a GIS-based environment was needed in order to conduct one homogenous dataset (w.r.t. geometrical and visual character) that represents one geologically-consistent map at the end. Therefore, the mapping team was supported by an predefined mapping template which was generated in the proprietary ArcGIS environment. The template contains different layers (called feature classes) for the different object/geomoetry types and contains predefined attribute values as well as cartographic symbols. The cartographic symbols follow international standards as far as possible. The colours for the geological units refering to established colour values used in geologic maps, e.g., standardized planetary maps generated by USGS, but considering individual needs and requests within the mapping team, too.

The data product pubished here based on the mentioned GIS-based template and represents the merged global GIS-dataset of the 15 individually conducted geological maps of Ceres within the Dawn Mission. The detailed descriptions of all those scientific interpretions are published in the papers listed within the reference section. Based on team-internal decisions the dataset is provided within the properitary format of ESRIs ArcGIS environment. However, in order to use the data product also outside this software environment, single shapefiles with additional information about the symbology are also included. All available data are available within the compressed folder and the readme-file gives some informative remarks for the useage of the data

Additional remark: The data set provided here does not represent a holistic (in term of topological and scientifical) unification of the 15 individual mapping data as primarily geometric and content-related inconsistencies at quadrangle boundaries prohibited a unified compilation. On the one side, this is due to the fact that the the aim of the mapping project was not to produce a uniform global map, but rather to gain a first impression of the geology of Ceres and publish associated scientific papers. On the other side, that the geological mapping project ran parallel to the regular mission phase, and a finalizing review process for creating a global geological dataset wasn´t scheduled in the mission planning. This deficiency cannot be remedied simply by merging topological missmatches or changing the visualisation. Rather it will require ongoing and detailed scientific discussion of the interpretation results, which could be solved within an updating version of the global map.

High frequency temperature and dissolved oxygen data from 15 Adirondack lakes during the 2021 warm season

A full understanding of the contemporary status of lake dissolved oxygen and thermal habitat in the face of global change is enhanced by high-frequency monitoring that goes beyond periodic water column profiles of temperature and dissolved oxygen. The data contained herein were used to examine the relationship between both concurrent warming and increasing dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations, and oxythermal habitat status for cold-water species. To obtain high resolution oxythermal habitat characteristics, fifteen lakes in the Adirondack Park of northern New York state were monitored from mid-June to mid-October of 2021. Lakes were outfitted with high-frequency temperature and dissolved oxygen logger chains located in most cases at the deepest point of each lake. Temperature loggers were placed throughout the water column while dissolved oxygen loggers were positioned to best capture low-oxygen portions of the water column based on data from previous years. To enhance vertical resolution, high-frequency data were supplemented with periodic water column profiles. In addition, to provide a comprehensive regional perspective, we include historical DOC and depth data from more than 1,400 Adirondack lakes. Finally, to enhance understanding of fish response to temperature, we include body temperature data from tagged brook trout for two of our intensively monitored lakes during part of the 2023 stratified period.

Soil volumetric water content calculated from neutron hydroprobe data at 15 NPP study sites at the Jornada Basin LTER, 1989-2011 (Deprecated)

This data package contains soil water content data calculated from monthly neutron hydroprobe count measurements made at 15 net primary production (NPP) study locations on Jornada Experimental Range (JER) and Chihuahuan Desert Rangeland Research Center (CDRRC) lands. Once a month, neutron probe measurements are made at 10 depths (where possible) at each of 10 access tubes at each of the 15 NPP sites using a neutron probe (CPN Model 503DR Hydroprobe). The raw dataset, also on EDI (knb-lter-jrn.210013001), consists of the count of thermalized neutrons at 30 cm depth intervals to a maximum depth of 300 cm. In this data package, the raw neutron counts have been converted to volumetric water content (VWC) to a maximum depth of 270 cm using calibration equations (deepest probe depths are excluded from VWC calculations). The NPP sites these measurements are made at represent the 5 dominant vegetation types of the Jornada Basin, which consist of 3 shrub (creosotebush, mesquite dune, and tarbush) and 2 grass (upland grassland and playa) types. Three NPP sites are located in each of the types. This data collection is ongoing with new data collected monthly. NOTE: This data package is deprecated and will not be updated in the future. These VWC values were calculated using a now-outdated calibration method. Values of VWC calculated with the improved and fully documented calibration method are available in another EDI data package (knb-lter-jrn.210013003).
